Using n = 72 and h = 4/72, we enter the data from Table P18.1 into Simpsons
rule to find U 2 U1 = 890.7 N m .
Tm = (U 2 U1 ) ( 4 ) = ( 890.7 N m ) ( 4 rad ) = 70.88 N m

18.2

Using the data of Table 18.2, determine the moment of inertia for a flywheel for a twocylinder 90 V engine having a single crank. Use Cs = 0.012 5 and a nominal speed of
4 600 rev/min. If a cylindrical or disk-type flywheel is to be used, what should be the
thickness if it is made of steel and has an outside diameter of 400 mm? Use = 7.8
Mg/m3 as the density of steel.
Using n = 48 and h = 4/48, we integrate the data from columns 2-5 of Table 18.2 by
Simpsons rule to find U 2 U1 = 394.38 N m .
= 4 600 rev/min = 481.7 rad/s
2
I = (U 2 U1 ) ( Cs 2 ) = ( 394.38 N m ) ( 0.0125 )( 481.7 rad/s ) = 0.136 N m s 2
R = 200 mm
= 7800 kg/m3
2
m = 2 I R 2 = 2 0.136 N m s 2 ( 200 mm ) = 6.8 kg
V = m / = 6.8 kg 7800 kg/m3 = 872 mm3
2
t = V A = 872 mm3 (196.85 mm ) = 6.85 mm

18.3

Ans.

Using the data of Table 18.1, find the mean output torque and the flywheel inertia
required for a three-cylinder in-line engine corresponding to a nominal speed of 2 400
rev/min. Use Cs = 0.03.
Using n = 48 and h = 4/48, we integrate the data from Table 18.1 by Simpsons rule to
find U 2 U1 = 394.38 N m .
Tm = (U 2 U1 ) ( 4 ) = ( 394.38 N m ) ( 4 rad ) = 31.38 N m

Ans.

= 2 400 rev/min = 251.3 rad/s

2
I = (U 2 U1 ) ( Cs 2 ) = ( 394.38 N m ) ( 0.03)( 251.3 rad/s ) = 0.208 N m s 2

18.4

The load torque required by a 200-tonne punch press is displayed in Table P18.4 for one
revolution of the flywheel. The flywheel is to have a nominal angular velocity of 2 400
rev/min and to be designed for a coefficient of speed fluctuation of 0.075.
Determine the mean motor torque required at the flywheel shaft and the motor
(a)
horsepower needed, assuming a constant torque-speed characteristic for the
motor.
Find the moment of inertia needed for the flywheel.

Using n = 36 and h = 2/36, we integrate the data from Table P18.4 by Simpsons
rule to find U = 1887.1 N m .
Ans.
Tm = U ( 2 ) = (1887.1 N m ) ( 2 rad ) = 300.49 N m
= 2 400 rev/min = 251.3 rad/s
( 300.49 N m )( 2 400 rev/min )( 2 rad/rev ) = 6071 HP
P = T =
Ans.
746 watt/HP
The torque data shows a constant requirement of 96.84 Nm, probably friction, in
addition to the torque for the punching operation. If this constant torque is
subtracted from the data in the table (for speed fluctuation), and the integration
repeated, then we get, U = 1684.26 N m
2
I = U ( Cs 2 ) = (1684.26 N m ) ( 0.075 )( 251.3 rad/s ) = 0.355 N m s 2 Ans.

Find Tm for the four-cylinder engine whose torque displacement is that of Fig. 18.4.
Using n = 12 and h = /12, we integrate the data from column 6 of Table 18.2 by
Simpsons rule to find U 2 U1 = 394.38 N m .
Tm = (U 2 U1 ) ( ) = ( 394.38 N m ) ( rad ) = 125.598 N m
