5. Allow additional space below flange bottom of control valves when needed for removal of valve seats and
plug.
6. Control valve manifold to be detailed on drawing other than piping elevation (specify direction that detail
is viewed).
7. Identify any out of spec flanges.
8. Maximum elevation of by-pass handwheel to be 2057mm above operating level. When by-pass elevation
does not permit, rotate by-pass valve to horizontal and set with bottom of handwheel 2057mm above
operating level.
9. Process engineer should review control valve manifold arrangement selection.
10. Arrow indicates line number change, spec change, or both.

2. The elevation view above details the installation of atmospheric discharge piping for relief valves handling
combustible or hazardous vapours if such is required under the job piping specification or for safety
considerations.
3. Where it is necessary to support or brace the discharge pipe or stack the support shall be as detailed on
this sheet. In cases where a coupling is required on a 2" discharge pipe that is to be supported as shown
above a different type of support must be designed because clearances will not permit installation of both
coupling and support leg.
4. The 3/4" coupling in the relief stack shall be installed and piped to a suitable discharge point in those
installations where it is considered hazardous to have vapour or condensate discharge freely at the valve
location. Where the drain in the relief valve stack is piped up, the trapped hole in the body of the valve shall
be plugged.
5. For relief valves which discharge combustible vapours at high elevations such as on towers and where
required by client, etc., the 3/4" coupling shall be installed and connected for steam snuffing.

FIG. 5 (SIDE SUCTION).

ALL ARRANGEMENTS ARE SHOWN IN ELEVATION VIEW EXCEPT FIG. 5 WHICH IS SHOWN IN PLAN VIEW.

Notes:
1. Suction piping is to be as short as possible with a minimum number of fittings.
2. Support piping, preferably from pump foundation, to prevent strain on pump nozzle, especially hot piping.
Areas where differential settlement of pump foundation and pipe support foundation may occur, these
foundations must be integral.
3. Avoid overhead loops in piping when possible. If they are unavoidable vent the high point.
4. For side suction pumps a vertical suction line is preferred.
5. When space does not permit 3 pipe diameters, install a vertical vane in the center of the LR 90 elbow.
This should be checked with the mechanical or process engineer in conjunction with the pump vendor.
6. A 90 elbow between the valve and pump should be used as shown in figures 1, 2, 4, and 5. This is a
must for ring type joint flanges when the inflexibility of the pipe does not allow spreading the flanged joint to
remove the ring gasket and pipe spool.
7. The product being pumped dictates need for drain valve (see flow sheet).
8. Temporary strainers are shown in the preferred position. Alternate positions are at the valve downstream
flange with strainer pointed towards pump or at pump nozzle with strainer pointed away from the pump.
Check with mechanical or process engineer before placing strainer at pump nozzle.
9. Check clearance of strainer projecting into 90 elbow.
10. Use concentric reducer in suction from above on pumps with inlet ports 2" and smaller.
11. If the valve is located close to the pump, flat type temporary strainers may be inserted in the flanged
joint of downstream end of valve.
12. Fig's 1 thru 4 are for end or side suction pumps. Fig. 5 is for side suction pumps only.
13. If pump casing is provided with drain plug the eccentric reducer in figures 2 and 4 may be installed flat
side down (FSD) in which case note 7 may not apply but instead the casing drain may be run valved to
drain, especially if liquid is likely to freeze.

NOTES:
1. WHEN EVER OTHER DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS PERMIT, VALVES ARE BEST INSTALLED WITH THE STEM POINTING STRAIGHT UP (VERTICAL STEM) SINCE THIS
POSITION GREATLY FACILITATES IN PLACE MAINTENANCE (LUBRICATION OF SCREW, INSPECTION, RE-PACKING).
2. VALVES MAY BE ROTATED AS FAR AS THE HORIZONTAL POSITION WITH NO GREAT DECREASE IN MAINTENANCE CONVENIENCE, BUT SHOULD NOT BE INSTALLED
WITH THE STEM DOWNWARDS SINCE THE BONNET ACTS AS A TRAP FOR ABRASIVE SEDIMENT AND WATER WHICH MAY FREEZE UNDER ADVERSE
CLIMATIC CONDITIONS.

1. Spring support types for hangers and supports: (a) Variable load. (b) Constant load.
2. Anchor prevents thermal or mechanical movement; Support attachment is extra steelwork required exclusively for pipe
supports; Hanger and Spring hanger allows piping subject to large temperature changes to flex due to the changes in
length. The hangers should be long enough to limit the total movement to 10 degrees of arc; U bolt allows axial
movement only; Guide allows axial movement but prevents movement at right angles to the pipe axis. It may also allow
vertical movement; Shoe is a resting support that prevents vertical downward displacement; Clamp allows axial
movement only; Restraint prevents axial movement but permits movement at right angles to the pipe axis; Dummy leg is
a resting support that prevents vertical downward displacement; Spring support is designed to allow for vertical
movement within pre-determined limits; Trunnion support is a resting support that prevents vertical downward
displacement; Light sleeper and Heavy sleeper are resting supports that prevent vertical downward displacement.
3. Support attachments are fabricated from structural steel; Dummy legs and Trunnion supports are fabricated from
lengths of pipe and flanges.

PIPE SUPPORT SYMBOLS (CONTINUED)

Notes: (Continued from page 217).
4. In most companies a document defining the method of Pipe-Stress Analysis on Contracts/Projects together with a
Critical Line List is issued by the Stress Section to the Piping Section so that the Piping Section will then submit stress
sketches for initial approval by the Stress Section. The Stress Section is totally responsable for the Pipe-Stress Analysis.
5. Stress sketches are issued in isometric form clearly showing all relevant details of the geometry of the pipe line being
considered. The final responsibility for all supports for critical lines rests with the Stress Section but it will be very helpful
if the stress sketches show proposed support locations, marked by the Piping Section, using the following special stress
sketch symbols:
A = Anchor ; PS = Resting support permitting any horizontal movement, but preventing vertical downward displacement;
SS = Spring support; G = Guide, permitting axial movement of the pipe but preventing movement at right angles to the
pipe axis. If vertical movement is also to be allowed add a note to this guide. The same symbol applies also for guides
on vertical lines; LS = Restraint (line stop), preventing axial movement of the pipe but permitting movement at right
angles to the pipe axis.

2. Insulation class 1 could mean, for example, 'Heat Conservation' according to the classification of an Insulation
Specification. Example of types of insulation:
Class 1. Heat Conservation.
Class 2. Insulation for Sub-zero Temperatures.
Class 3. Personnel Protection.
Class 4. Frost Protection.
Class 5. Cold Room Insulation.
Class 6. Acoustic Insulation to 10 db.
Class 7. Acoustic Insulation to 20 db.
Class 8. Acoustic Insulation to 30 db.
3. These symbols will not be shown as part of the pipeline number if a pipeline is not insulated and/or not heat traced.
4. Pipeline numbers are shown in Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P & I D's), Line Lists, Piping Layouts, Isometrics
and in many other Oil and Gas job documents.
