Morning Worship, Communion, December 7th 2014
Welcome
Introit
Call to worship
While you are waiting for these things, beloved,
strive to be found at peace, without spot or blemish;
and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. 2 Peter 3.14
(together)
Lord, as we gather here today,
we continue to watch for you.
Be in our watching and our waiting,
our speaking and our listening,
our coming in and our going out.
Lord, as we gather here today,
we continue to watch for you.
Amen.

237 O come O Come Emmanuel ( Lighting of the Advent Crown )

Veni, Emmanuel
1
O come, O come, Emmanuel,
and ransom captive Israel,
that mourns in lonely exile here
until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice ! Rejoice ! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.
2
O come, O come, thou Lord of might,
who to thy tribes, on Sinais height,
in ancient times didst give the law
in cloud and majesty and awe :
3
O come, thou Rod of Jesse, free
thine own from Satans tyranny ;
from depths of hell thy people save,
and give them victory oer the grave :
4
O come, thou Key of David, come,
and open wide our heavenly home ;
make safe the way that leads on high,
and close the path to misery :
5
O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer
our spirits by thine advent here ;
disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
and deaths dark shadows put to flight :

translated John Mason Neale (18181866)

Prayer
Readings : Isaiah 40: 1-11, Mark 1:1-8
334 On Jordans Banks the Baptist Cry (offering)
Iordanis oras praevia
1
On Jordans bank the Baptists cry
announces that the Lord is nigh ;
awake and hearken for he brings
glad tidings of the King of kings.
2
Then cleansed be every heart from sin ;
make straight the way for God within ;
prepare we in our hearts a home,
where such a mighty Guest may come.
3
For you are our salvation, Lord,
our refuge and our great reward ;
without your grace we waste away,
like flowers that wither and decay.
4
Stretch out your hand, to heal our sore,
and make us rise to fall no more ;
once more upon your people shine,
and fill the world with love divine.
5
All praise to you, eternal Son,
whose advent has our freedom won,
whom with the Father we adore,
and Holy Spirit, evermore.
Charles Coffin (16761749)
translated John Chandler (18061876) and others

198 Let us build a house where love can dwell(v 1-3)
1
Let us build a house where love can dwell
and all can safely live,
a place where saints and children tell
how hearts learn to forgive ;
built of hopes and dreams and visions,
rock of faith and vault of grace ;
here the love of Christ shall end divisions :
All are welcome,
all are welcome,
all are welcome in this place.
2
Let us build a house where prophets speak,
and words are strong and true,
where all Gods children dare to seek
to dream Gods reign anew.
Here the cross shall stand as witness
and as symbol of Gods grace ;
here as one we claim the faith of Jesus :

Let us build a house where love is found

in water, wine and wheat :
a banquet hall on holy ground,
where peace and justice meet.
Here the love of God, through Jesus,
is revealed in time and space,
as we share in Christ the feast that frees us :
Marty Haugen (b. 1950)
Sacrement of Holy Communion
472 Come though Long expected Jesus
1
Come, thou long-expected Jesus,
born to set thy people free ;
from our fears and sins release us ;
let us find our rest in thee.
2
Israels strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art,
dear desire of every nation,
joy of every longing heart.
3
Born thy people to deliver,
born a child, and yet a King,
born to reign in us for ever,
now thy gracious kingdom bring.
4
By thine own eternal Spirit
rule in all our hearts alone ;
by thine all-sufficient merit
raise us to thy glorious throne.
Charles Wesley (17071788)
