Non-Sinusoidal Waveform

Experiment no. ____

II. Introduction
Oscilloscope can be used to visualize signals like sinusoidal or non-sinusoidal
signals. Non-sinusoidal signal like rectangular and triangular waveforms and even
sawtooth signal differ with sinusoidal because most of our electronic instruments
used in laboratory are made on the basis of sinusoidal signals. However, oscilloscope
can be used to view, evaluate, and analyze non-sinusoidal signals.
III. Tools and Equipment
(1) Oscilloscope
(1) Function generator
(1) VOM
(1) Frequency Counter

AC Waveform

I. Objective
1. To familiarize with the non-sinusoidal parameters i.e., effective value, average
value, period and frequency.
2. To compare the reading of electronic VOM with that of oscilloscope for nonsinusoidal waveforms such as rectangular and triangular waveforms.

IV. Parts Needed

(1) 1 k brw.blk.red
(1) set of connecting wires
V. Procedure
1. Set up the circuit of Figure 1.

2. Set the following parameters

Oscilloscope:
AC Input Coupling
2V/Div
1 ms/Div
VOM:
Highest AC voltage
Function Generator:

VI. Questions and Problems

1. In a rectified dc power supply, there are usually voltage fluctuations occurring
at a frequency of 120 Hz. What is the period of these fluctuations?
2. T-F. In an ac sine wave, the negative peak is equal to the positive peak. _____
