Electric actuators are among the
most important components of the
safety system of a nuclear power
plant. This means that the actuators
have to operate the valve correctly
under defined conditions and to
remain safely operable even under
DBE conditions.
AUMA is one of the leading electric
actuator manufacturers worldwide
and has been manufacturing electric
actuators for the use in nuclear
power plants for more than 25 years.
Actuators from that time are still in
use today which proves the operational reliability of these devices.
Apart from the multi-turn actuators
for
conventional
applications
(SA/SAR), AUMA has two multi-turn
actuator ranges SAN/SARN and
SAI/SARI that are qualified for the
use in nuclear power plants. The
SAI/SARI actuators are qualified for
Inside
Containment,
the
SAN/SARN actuators for Outside
Containment.
With this brochure AUMA offers a
complete overview of construction
and functionality of the SAI/SARI
actuator range. The SAN/SARN
actuators are described in a separate brochure.

Applications
AUMA multi-turn actuators of the
type ranges SAI and SARI are qualified for the use inside containment
and correspond to the 1E qualification according to IEEE 382. This corresponds to the violet section in the
illustration.
The actuators can be adapted to suit
the requirements of nearly all valve
applications.
This is achieved by:

Graded protection concept


In a compact, solid and DBE resistant housing in enclosure protection
IP 68, components are installed
which are themselves qualified for
DBE conditions. All outer housing
components are made of aluminium
free materials.

The robust design in combination


with high quality components
ensures the function during normal
operation and under DBE conditions. This includes for example suitable lubricants, insulation materials
and the hermetically sealed limit and
torque switches.

A multi-turn actuator is an actuator
which transmits to the valve a torque
for at least one full revolution. It is

The usual valve positions in


open-close duty are the end positions OPEN and CLOSED. Upon
receiving an appropriate command
the actuator moves the valve to one
of the two end positions or, if necessary, to a pre-defined intermediate
position.

Modulating duty
The controlled variable in a modulating application is affected by many
influences. A change of the reference input signal, pressure fluctuation in the pipeline and temperature
variations influence the process in
such a way that a frequent adjustment of the MOV is required. For
sensitive modulating applications
the starts may be in intervals of a few
seconds.

Therefore high demands are placed


on actuators for this duty. Mechanical components and the motor must
be designed appropriately to withstand a large number of operations
with no decline in the required modulating accuracy.

The operation time at a constant load is short, so that


thermal equilibrium is not reached. The pause is long
enough for the machine to cool down to ambient temperature. The duration of the short-time operation is limited

The duty is a sequence of identical cycles which consist


of starting time, operation time with constant load and
rest period. The rest period allows the machine to cool
down so that thermal equilibrium is not reached. The relative on- time at S4 - 25 % is limited to 25 %.

Seating
Depending on the design of the valve
to be operated, end position switching either limit seating, i.e. by measuring the valve travel completed, or
torque seating, i.e. after reaching a
defined torque. For this purpose, the

actuator is equipped with two independent measuring systems, i.e.


limit switching and torque switching.

The type of seating has to be taken in


account both when setting the actuator and in the actuator control. However, the processing of signals for
the two types of seating differs.

The actuator runs at nominal output speed up to the set


tripping point P. Depending on output speed, actuator
size and valve type, the combination has sufficient inertia to move the obturator further in direction of the end
position (overrun) after the motor has been switched
off. In addition, the overrun also depends on the load.
By selecting an earlier tripping point P, the overrun can
be accounted for in case of limit seating.

After starting from the end position OPEN, the actuator


runs in direction CLOSE. In end position CLOSED the
torque increases within the valve seat until the actuator
is automatically switched off after reaching the set
value.

Functions
Overload protection against torque peaks
The torque switching, used for
torque seating in the end position
(see page 8), serves as overload
protection for the entire travel, even
in the case of limit seating.

After the controls have processed


the torque switch signal accordingly,
the motor will be switched off. As a
result, valve and actuator are protected from damage.

If excessive torque builds up in the


valve in an intermediate position,
e.g. due to a trapped object, the
torque switching trips after reaching
the set tripping torque.

Torque peaks
Depending on the actuator/valve
configuration, due to time delay and
overrun, excessive torques may
occur in the valve. The duration of
the time delay, output speed actuator
size and valve rigidity are factors in
the size of torque peak.
AUMA can determine the torque
peaks to be expected for a specified
combination on request. Therefore
the planning for actuator and valve
can be modified accordingly at an
early stage.

Hammer blow effect


The hammer blow effect enables the
unseating of jammed and sticky
valves which are seldom operated.
The worm wheel and output shaft are
connected via a dog coupling with
backlash. If the direction of rotation is
reversed, the backlash first has to be
covered before the valve is actually
unseated (hammer blow). During
motor operation the motor can therefore run up without load to the nominal output speed.

The connection between handwheel


and output shaft is also provided by
means of a dog coupling with backlash. The user can thereby build up
the momentum to unseat valves with
a hammer blow.

Equipment
Limit and torque switches
With the help of the switches, the
mechanically measured travel (i.e.
number of turns) and torque are converted into usable signals for the
actuator controls. In the standard
version, the actuators are equipped
with four switches:
one limit switch each for the end
positions OPEN and CLOSED,
one torque switch each for the directions OPEN and CLOSE.
The limit switches are tripped when
the set switching point, i.e. an end
position, is reached and the torque
switches are tripped when the set
tripping torque is exceeded.

If the actuator is supplied with DUO


limit switching (see below) two more
limit switches for intermediate positions are available.
In order to meet the high requirements on reliability, AUMA uses hermetically sealed microswitches with
snap contacts which have been specially developed and qualified for the
use in nuclear power plants.
The switch contacts are gold plated
to ensure perfect signal transmission
even for low voltages and low currents.

Mechanical position indicator (option)


The position of the valve is indicated
continuously by the adjustable indicator disc bearing the symbols for
OPEN and CLOSED. The disc can
be seen through an indicator glass in
the switch compartment cover.
The mechanical position indicator
requires an additional reduction
gearing in the control unit.

With DUO limit switching an additional switching point can be set for each
direction of rotation (intermediate
position switches). The switching can
be set to any valve position between
the end positions.
The switch will remain operated from
set tripping point to end position if not
more than 120 turns of the hollow

3-phase AC motors
As standard AUMA multi-turn actuators are equipped with 3-phase AC
motors (TENV, pot-type motor without ventilation).
AUMA has developed these motors
to comply with the special require-

ments in valve automation. The most


important feature of this design is the
high starting torque.

For each actuator ordered, the


respective motor is built individually.
Therefore, i.e. by the sizing of the
motor, it is possible to influence the
output torque. AUMA also offers
actuators whose torques, in deviation from the values stated on page
8, are adapted to the requirements of
a specific application.

1) Within this range, the actuator reaches the specified torque. Overvoltage may result in excessive temperature rise in the motor windings.
The stall torque increases in the ratio of the square of overvoltage divided by the standard voltage. In case of undervoltage the motor torque
(stall torque) decreases accordingly with the square of the voltage. If larger voltage variations are stated, they will be taken into account
when sizing the actuator.

Design principle

Motor

An especially high starting torque is


frequently required to unseat valves
from the end position. The 3-phase AC
motors developed by AUMA fulfil this basic
requirement.

Gearing

The well proven principle of worm


gearing is used to reduce the motor
speed to the required actuator output speed.
Worm shaft and output shaft with the worm
wheel run in ample sized bearings.

The sliding worm is positioned between two


stacks of springs on the worm shaft. The
worm will be moved in relation to the torque.
This axial displacement, as a measure for
the torque, is transmitted to the control unit
via lever and gear wheels.

The gear housing is filled with lubricant. This


results in maintenance free service for a long
period of time.

Torque switching

The torque switches are tripped as


soon as the set torque has been
reached. This is the prerequisite for torque
seating in one of the end positions. Within the
limits valid for each size, different values can
be specified for each direction. For torque
seating in the end position, the tripping
torque specified by the valve manufacturer
has to be set. In addition the torque switches
provide protection to the equipment in the
event of excessive torque in mid-travel.

Limit switching

The limit switching enables limit


seating in the end positions. The
switches signal to the actuator controls that
the set tripping points (end positions) have
been reached, which then switch off the
motor.

Design principle

Electrical connection

The connections for motor and controls are either made via terminals or
via a 50-pole AUMA plug/socket connector.
If the plug/socket is disconnected for maintenance work, the wiring of the plug/socket
connector remains undisturbed. Furthermore, the plug/socket connector is distinguished from the terminals by the smaller
size and a reduced weight.

Manual operation

For commissioning or in an emergency the multi-turn actuator can be


operated with the handwheel. By operating
the change-over lever the motor drive is disconnected and the handwheel engaged.
When starting the motor the manual drive is
automatically disengaged. During electric
operation the handwheel does not rotate.

Valve attachment
The mounting flange is according to
EN ISO 5210 or DIN 3210.

Various output drive types are available.


Therefore it is possible to adapt to different
types of valves.

Mechanical position
indicator (option)

The mechanical position indicator is used to


indicate the valve position continuously. An
additional reduction gearing which reduces
the turns at the output drive to the indication
range of the position indicator is required.

The bevel gear for handwheel operation has two advantages:
Reduction gearing reduces the
manual forces during manual operation.
If there is not much space available the side-mounted handwheel
turned by 90 may be an asset.

Combinations with part-turn GSI gearboxes


SAI actuators can be combined with
GSI worm gearboxes for part-turn
valves applications.
The torque range of these combinations is up to 24,000 Nm.
The worm gearboxes are available in
different versions, e.g. for counterclockwise closing.

the corresponding technical data
sheets.

can be combined with a
GSI worm gearbox.

Equipment
Combinations with LEN linear thrust unit
SAI actuators can be combined with
the LEN linear thrust unit for linear
valve applications.
The LEN 12.1 LEN 200.1 linear
thrust units are qualified for outside
containment use. SAI/SARI actuators in combination with LEN thrust
units have not been submitted for
qualification by AUMA. They must be
tested on a case by case basis by the
project engineer or the end user.
The LEN can be used to generate
thrust up to 150 kN and strokes up to
100 mm.

Electrical connection
Terminals
If the use of terminals is stipulated for the electrical
connection, the actuators can be delivered with
ceramic terminals specially approved and qualified
for the use in nuclear power plants. Depending on
the terminal plan of the actuator the required number of terminals are mounted. The terminals are
mounted in a frame made of cast iron.

AUMA plug/socket connector (option)


Advantages of this type of connection:
Once connected, the wiring remains undisturbed
due to the plug/socket connection, even if the actuator has to be removed from the valve, e.g. for
maintenance purposes.

Compact size
Parking frame, protection cover (option)
These parts offer the facility to place the plug connector, while taken off the actuator, in a safe place
on a wall. The open terminal compartment at the
actuator can be closed with the protection cover.
This prevents foreign matter, dust and water from
entering the compartment while the plug connector
is removed.

Output drive types


Various output drive types according to EN ISO 5210 or DIN 3210 are
available in order to adapt the
multi-turn actuators to the different
types of valves.

non-rotating valve stems.
The
mounting
flange
together with the stem nut
and thrust bearings form
one assembly, which is
suitable for accepting
thrust.

Output drive for the transmission of torques. Valve


mounting flange and plug
sleeve form a separate
unit. Low radial loads can
be accepted.

Bore with keyway for the


transmission of torques
integrated in the hollow
shaft of the actuator.

Spring loaded stem nut. As


output drive type A, suitable for rising, non-rotating
valve stems. By using special springs it allows a limited axial displacement of
the stem nut to compensate thermal expansion of
the valve stem or to absorb
high dynamic loads when
the valve closes quickly.

Enclosure protection IP 68

Corrosion protection KI/Colour

As standard, AUMA multi-turn actuators SAI and SARI are supplied in


enclosure protection IP 68 according
to EN 60 529.

AUMA multi-turn actuators SAI and


SARI and the gearbox range GSI are
provided with the KI corrosion protection which is suitable for use in
nuclear power plants.

The total film thickness is at least


220 m.

All outside parts as well as the coatings are free from aluminium. Before
finish coating, a 2-component coating based on epoxy resin with
micaeous iron oxide is applied as primary and intermediate coating on
the sand-blasted actuator.

Colour

In order to guarantee the enclosure


protection IP 68, suitable cable
glands must be used. They are not
part of the standard supply, but can
be provided by AUMA, if ordered.

All outside screws are made of stainless steel.

The standard colour of the finish


coating is silver-grey (RAL 7001).
Optional colours are flame red (RAL
3000) and pure white (RAL 9010).

The entire multi-turn actuator is


coated with a decontaminable
two-component paint based on polyurethane.

Lifetime according to IEEE 382


The minimum lifetime of 2,000 operating cycles for open-close actuators
stipulated in IEEE 382 was proved
for the multi-turn actuators SAI by
means of a type test.

Multi-turn actuators for modulating duty SARI


The lifetime in operation hours (h)
depends on the load and the number
of starts. A high starting frequency
will rarely improve the modulating
accuracy. To reach the longest possible maintenance and fault-free
operation time, the number of starts
per hour chosen should be as low as
permissible for the process.

The minimum lifetime of 100,000


operating cycles for modulating
actuators stipulated in IEEE 382 was
proved for the multi-turn actuators
SARI by means of a type test.

AUMA actuators can be operated


without restriction in any mounting
position.

Up to an integrated radiation dose of


2 x 106 Gy (2 x 108 rad) the full functionality of the actuators has been
proved.

The actuators are qualified for the


OBE (Operating Basis Earthquake,
up to 3 g within a frequency range of
2 to 35 Hz) and for the SSE (Safe
Shutdown Earthquake, up to 4.5 g
within a frequency range of 2 to
32 Hz).

Pressure under DBE conditions


Up to a pressure of 5.6 kg/cm2, this
corresponds to approx. 0.55 MPa
absolute pressure, the full functionality of the actuators has been
proved.

EU Directives
Machinery Directive
According to this directive, AUMA
actuators, actuator controls and
valve gearboxes are not complete
machines. This means that a Certificate of Conformity is not possible.
However, AUMA confirms with the
Declaration of Incorporation (on the
Internet under www.auma.com) that
during the design stage the standards
mentioned in the Machinery Directive
were applied.
By mounting the actuator to other
components (valves, pipelines etc.)
a machine within the meaning of the
Directive is formed. Before commissioning this machine a Certificate of
Conformity must be issued.

Functional tests
Low Voltage and Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive
AUMA actuators fulfil the requirements, which has been proved in
extensive tests. Therefore AUMA
has issued a Declaration of Conformity according to these Directives
(on
the
Internet
under
www.auma.com).

After assembly, all actuators are


thoroughly tested according to
AUMAs inspection specification and
the torque switching is calibrated.
A final inspection record can be provided. The inspection records can be
retrieved online via the Internet
(www.auma.com).

AUMA has a quality management
system which is certified according
to ISO 9001:2000. All internal procedures have been defined in the management manual.
Attention to detail and the use of high
quality materials are the prerequisite
for long and fault-free operation. For
this reason, a large number of
checks and functional tests are integrated in the production process.
All production and assembly processes as well as service work on
the device are fully documented and
can always be reproduced.
