Deterministic vs. Stochastic, Even vs. Odd, Periodic vs. Aperiodic,
Energy vs. Power. Mathematical models of continuous-time
signals: sinusoidal, exponential, unit step, unit pulse and unit
impulse. Signal approximation by impulse functions. Linear

numerical evaluation) and its properties. Discrete-time signal
models: unit step and unit delta. Discrete-time convolution (i.e.
convolution sum, graphical evaluation and convolution table) and
its properties.
Circuit Analysis using Laplace Transform
Introduction to Laplace transform (s-domain) and its properties.
Inverse Laplace transform and method of partial fraction. Circuit
analysis using Laplace transform: resistor, capacitor and inductor
models. Applications of Laplace transform to first and second order
networks. Concept of poles, zeros and transfer function. Frequency
response in s-domain and Bode diagrams.
Two Port Networks
Concepts of one- and two-port networks. Two-port network
parameters (matrix form) and circuit models: z-, y-, h-, g-, a- and bparameters. Relationship between two-port network parameters.
Reciprocity and symmetric properties of two-port networks.
Equivalence of two-port networks: T-, - and lattice networks.
Network interconnections: series, parallel, series-parallel, parallelseries and cascade. Analysis of terminated two-port networks:
current gain, input impedance, voltage gain and output impedance.
State Variable Analysis of RLC Networks
Concepts of state and state variables. Formulation of state and
output equations of simple RLC networks using state-transition
matrix. Transfer function of state and output equations in s-domain.
Network Synthesis of Passive Elements
Introduction to network synthesis. Hurtwitz polynomial. Positive
real function. Synthesis of one-port network (i.e. RC, RL, LC)
using Foster and Cauer methods. Properties of immittance functions
of RC, RL and LC networks.
Passive Filters
Introduction to ideal filters and its design elements: lowpass,
highpass, bandpass and bandstop. Practical filter designs using
passive elements: resistor, capacitor and inductor. Filter
transformations (i.e. lowpass, highpass and bandpass) using
frequency and impedance denormalizations. Butterworth and
Chebyshev filter approximations.
