Plainfield Area Business Alliance, Inc. (PABA) is a new grassroots organization made up of local business owners whose purpose is to help encourage a vibrant business environment through
collaboration, information exchange and promotion, according to
board member Jackie Batten. PABA began meeting last spring
with the idea of stimulating business in Plainfield and the nearby
area, explains Batten, who is a training coordinator at WGDR/
WGDH Goddard College Community Radio.
Annual membership in Plainfield Area Business Alliance is
only $25 a year, and you will be represented at local events at a
PABA table and join us at our monthly meetings to share your
ideas feedback, Batten said.
Our membership is open to all businesses in the area who feel
they would benefit being a part of a progressive business group.
Our goal is to be inclusive, not exclusive. We presently represent
26 area businesses: Bartlett Hill Berry Farm, Karl Bissex, Black
Bear Biodiesel, The Blinking Light Gallery, Breckenridge Farm,
The Country Bookshop, Country Floors, Cushings Clutter
Antiques, Ben Graham, East Hill Tree Farm, Goddard College,
Greenfield Highland Beef, Hollister Hill Farm and B&B, The
Health Center, Littlewood Farm, Marshfield Inn & Motel,
Plainfield Coop, Plainfield Flower Farm, Plainfield Post Office,
Plainview Farm Maple Syrup, Vermont Yarn Shop at Plainview
Farm, Andrew Robinson, Sam Clark Design, Vermont Pie Girl,
and Willow Moon Farm.
Batten said that this past summer, the organization worked with
VTrans and were able to get tourist information signs installed at
no cost to the town.
The idea was to get people off RT2 and into the village. Our
goal is not just attract tourists but bring community members
down into town to shop and socialize more, notes Batten, adding

For the third year, the University of Vermont held its annual
celebration and recognition of entrepreneurship and family businesses. The UVM Family Business Awards ceremony packed
Billings Library on Homecoming Weekend in Burlington.
Only three awards were given out to recognize UVM alumni or
Vermont based family businesses that have overcome the challenges of succession from one generation to the next to achieve
long lasting success. The Galfetti and Zecchinelli families of the
Wayside Restaurant in Montpelier received the Vermont Legacy
Award.
Each winner has an inspiring story underscored by sustained
business success in highly competitive markets, Dr. Pramodita
Sharma, of the School of Business Administration, said. Good
old fashioned hard work and strong community involvement, are
smartly combined with innovative approaches to stay at the leading edge of their industries.

area since 1972. You, our readers, have been the guiding post to that service.
We appreciate your faithfulness and dedication to The World and our
advertisers. Like the many changes that central Vermont has experienced
over the past 42 years, we are embarking on another change.
We have decided to change the delivery method of The World. We
will be adopting a Demand Distribution Delivery System. This means
that we will increase the number of stores and businesses at which The
World will be distributed, and discontinuing delivery to households.
The number of newsstand delivery locations will be over 200 across the
region. Cost structures, including mandated workmans compensation and
unemployment, the Vermont health assessment, fuel cost, and many other
cost factors have made our current delivery impossible to maintain without
passing the increases to our advertisers. We feel that maintaining the
National Award Winning Quality of The World is of utmost importance
so that our advertisers can continue to connect with you, our readers, on a
weekly basis.

So, what does this mean for you? It means that you will find your World in places that you do business, such
as your gas station, convenience store, grocery store, and more. You will still realize all the benefits that The
World can bring you from our valuable local advertisers. And, our advertisers will still benefit from your
loyal readership of The World and the results that your patronage affords them. This change also means that
we will be stewards of the environment together, as we will be strong advocates of supplying the community
with all the papers it needs, but not more.
Were going to keep your favorite newspaper full of all the things you love to read and will be adding more
photos, local community news and sports. Your suggestions for stories and events to cover are always
appreciated.

The Central Vermont Community Land Trust (CVCLT) is seeking the help of local landlords to relocate residents who will be
displaced during major construction projects in Barre and
Montpelier.
The construction, scheduled to begin in early 2015, involves
interior upgrades to CVCLT-owned buildings at 39 and 40 Barre
Street, Montpelier, and a new four-story multi-family apartment
building on Summer Street in Barre.
Assistance from community leaders and local landlords is
needed to assure that the displaced CVCLT residents will have
safe and convenient housing during the transition. Most of the
residents need downtown units within easy walking distance of
local amenities and a bus line.
In Barre, 16 CVCLT residents will be displaced from their
apartments when demolition begins on three aging CVCLT-owned
buildings on the Summer Street site. Those tenants will need
apartments for about a year and then most will have the option of
moving into the new building.
This is a win-win situation, said Barre Mayor Thom Lauzon.
Its good for the Citys redevelopment, it guarantees rent for
Barre landlords, and it helps CVCLT residents stay in housing they

Editor,
Winston Churchill said, Dogs look up to man. Cats look down
to man. Pigs look us straight in the eye and see an equal.
Think about ita pig unlocks his cage, flies out the back of a
moving truck on the interstate, runs off into the woods where he
successfully evades coyotes, werewolves (I mean humans), and
braves the elements. After two lonely weeks in the woods, he
allows himself to be caught by friendly hunters and makes the
WCAX newsnot once but twice. Hello! This pig leads a more
illustrious life than most of us ever will. Hes a trailblazer, adventurer, and giver of hope when we need it most. Extraordinary
animals deserve a different fate.
As I watched the story last week, I hoped Farmer B. wouldnt
see it. I wanted Bethany (aka Howdy) to live. But when the second
report aired, I was surprised the owner didnt find Howdys shenanigans at all inspiring or amusing. What Burmeister from
Burelli Farm in Berlin said was brutally truthful. What happens
to pigs on a farm is eventually they end up being roast pork and
bacon and ham. Well thats hogwash! I reckon Ill rewrite the
script for Disneya fairytale version where Howdy lives out his
life happier than a pig in $#&!, takes flying lessons and doesnt
end up beside my pancakes.
Does every animal have to share this dystopic future? If you
answer yes, you need to take a long, hard look into your cold, dark
soul. We share the world with many creatures and theyre simply
not all meant to be fodder for our culinary desires and bottom
lines. Animals teach us wonderful things. We need to spare the
great ones, even if theyre tasty on a spit.
Howdys name says it all. Hey Yall, hes trying to communicate with us. Hes clearly a social Ham who deserves a stage, not
the frying pan. If Obama can pardon a turkey, surely Mr.
Burmeister can find a heart (perhaps clogged by too much bacon
fat) to pardon this little porky. Im also sure there are Vermonters
who would adopt this ancient symbol of wealth, good luck, happiness and honesty.
I just had a birthday; I was born in the year of the pig, 1971.
When I blew out the candle, I wished the Governor would pardon
Howdy from the smokehouse. Sure, I get it. Farmers raise animals
for a living. I eat meat too, having recently enjoyed a venison supper at my brother-in-laws. But there should always be exceptions
to the rule. Howdy is more valuable alive than dead. My cousin
uses farm animals in her therapy practice and I think Howdy
would make a smokin therapist. We could all learn to be more

Editor,
Every day, a remarkable group of Vermonters performs a great
labor of love: caring for aging parents, spouses, brothers, sisters,
aunts, uncles and friends, so they can remain in their homes. They
are on duty 24/7, and often cannot take a break. Yet they wouldnt
have it any other way. These caregivers are truly unsung heroes.
To honor family caregivers, AARP launched a new initiative to
focus attention on their stories called I Heart Caregivers. Every
caregiver has a story and gathering these stories strengthens the
caregiver community for everyones benefit. If you know someone
with a story to share, encourage them to go <www.aarp.org/iheartcaregivers>.
In addition to offering caregivers the opportunity to share stories with each other, the initiative also provides us with a powerful
way to bring those voices to lawmakers and policymakers in
Montpelier. Together with other organizations, AARP Vermont is
gearing up to work for common-sense solutions in the next legislative session to support family caregivers and their loved ones. For
example, we need to develop improved transitional care plans for
patients returning home from the hospital, secure better workplace
flexibility for caregivers, and ensure we are investing in the programs and services that caregivers and their loved ones need in
their own communities.
We know that there is a silent army of some 120,000 Vermonters
who are caregivers each year. Lets recognize these remarkable
individuals who are working to help seniors live independently
and who make it possible for them to stay in their homes where we
know they want to be.

Senate Report:
lage helping to raise a child, the parent has to try and raise them
without the input of friends and neighbors who know what is actually going on with your children. The little angel at home can be a
nightmare when they are beyond their parents control.
And of course, we all know devils who are quite lovely when
Mom and Dad arent in the picture. And I personally think that
it is time to go back to the good old days where parents not only
tolerate their neighbors but welcome their help and input. I hate to
point to my own children and their friends, but as a rule, they all
turned out wonderfully well! (Of course, they got spanked when
they were young too, as did my grandsons, and no one could be
better!) I am afraid that the children of today are raised by parents
who are quite insular and when or if confronted, cant believe that
their child could be misbehaving in any way at all. And if a neighbor or a friend interferes, a lawyer is standing right at the parents
elbow, making plans on how to stop them.
Well, now that we had solved all the parenting problems of our
day, lets think about the holiday season! I hope that all of you have
taken my advice about playing, singing and enjoying every single
Christmas carol that you hear. And instead of wishing those that
you meet and greet Happy Holidays take a deep breath and say
Merry Christmas. After all, it is the Christmas season and if we
are going to celebrate it, lets just do it!
Have you gotten all your gifts either made or bought? And do
you have them wrapped yet? Well, times a wasting, so it is time
to nish what you have to do. Keep in mind, once you have all
the gifts and stuff nished, you can sit down, hum a few carols
and really enjoy the season. Oh, and it isnt too early to say Merry
Christmas!

Montpelier the first net zero capital city in the country by the year
2030. Achieving net zero means that Montpelier would meet all its
energy needs (including electricity, heating and transportation
energy use) through energy efficiency and renewable energy
sources.
Senator Bernie Sanders noted that, Vermont is a national
leader in transforming our energy system from fossil fuels to
clean, sustainable, renewable energy. It is fitting that our state
capital has earned this prestigious recognition from the U.S.
Department of Energy.
Senator Patrick Leahy pointed out that, Montpeliers work to
address climate change is helping to increase our energy security
and to support our local economy and forest industry, while cutting our dependence on foreign oil. Montpelier is a true national
model of a climate champion for other communities to learn from,
and to follow.
While several cities have been working towards renewable
electricity goals, we believe that Montpelier stands alone in the
United States in its commitment to eliminating fossil fuel use
across all energy sectors. This ambitious goal, endorsed by the
City Council and Mayor, sets a new direction for Montpeliers
energy future that will stand as a national example of policy and
practice towards elimination of green house gas emissions and
local climate resilience.
We are thrilled to be part of the Montpelier Net Zero initiative
to develop innovative solutions for our customers and communities to help people save money and be more comfortable, while
moving to cleaner local sources of energy, said GMP President &
CEO Mary Powell. Projects like this will prove energy is transformational in moving customers and society to a more secure and
environmentally sound future.

pressures by letting your thrifty side guide you as you look for
those perfect gifts that typically reflect your good taste and love of

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Youll have a good handle on potential holiday problems if you delegate tasks to family members,
friends or co-workers -- most of whom will be more than happy to
help out.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Right now you are especially vulnerable to holiday scams that seek to take advantage of your generosity. Best advice: Check them out before you send out your
checks.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) The upcoming holiday season gives
the Big Cat much to purr about. Relationships grow stronger, and
new opportunities loom on the horizon, just waiting to be pounced

Division rival Middlebury. The Spaulding Crimson Tide got off to
a good start winning the Dr. Butsch Tourney topping North
Country 4-2. The U32 Raiders went 1-1 during the opening week
with a win over Harwood. The Stowe Raiders and Harwood
Highlanders are still looking for their first wins of the season.

35 goals last season. Sophomore Jessica Scott, another skilled
forward, gives the Tide another strong scoring option. Other forwards expected to contribute include senior Kassandra Perantoni,
junior Talia Gariboldi, and freshman Lauryn Bedard. Youll see
other members of the large freshman class skating, giving the
Crimson Tide much more depth than last year. The Crimson Tide
will have experience in the goal with senior Morgan Gosselin, a
starter since her freshman season, and freshman Maddy Pletzer.
Two experienced goaltenders is something Spaulding hasnt had
for a number of years.

Hobnail Basket
Q: I am quite stressed. I gave
a Fenton hobnail basket in
amber to a friend and have
since been told by a neighbor
that it is quite rare and valuable. It was about 12 inches in
size and had a ruffled edge.
-- Susan,
Elizabeth, New Jersey
A: Chill out. I found your
piece in Kovels Antiques &
Collectibles Price List by
Terry and the late Ralph
Kovel. According to the
Kovels, your Fenton basket is
worth about $4. Yes, that is
not a misprint: $4.
***
Q: At a recent yard sale, I
purchased several older perfume bottles. I dont collect
perfume bottles, but was
attracted their unique designs.
Since at least three are Art
Deco, I believe my bottles
probably are from the 1930s
and 40s. How can I find out
more about them?
-- EmmaLou,
Flagstaff, Arizona
A: One of the better organizations that you might find helpful is The International
Perfume Bottle Association,
www.perfumebottles.org. I
also like The Wonderful
World of Collecting Perfume
Bottles: Identification & Value
Guide by Jane Flanagan
(Collector Books). Even
though this reference was first
published in 2006, it remains
my go-to book for answers in
this field of collecting.
Collector Books contact is

Q: I purchased a drinking cup
showing
the
Cascade
Fountains, an attraction of the
St. Louis Worlds Fair of
1904. It is black and white
with gold trim. I paid $75 for
it.
-- Steve,
Cheyenne, Wyoming
A: You paid just about what it
is worth. I found your cup
referenced in 1904 St. Louis
Worlds Fair: Mementos and
Memorabilia by the late
Robert L. Hendershott, who
listed the tumblers value in
the $50 to $100 range.
***
Q: I have three baseballs, all
signed by major-league players from the 1940s and 50s. I
would like to have them
appraised.
-- Steve,
Alexander City, Alabama
A: Robert Edward Auctions,
LLC, specializes in all areas
of baseball collecting, including autographs, uniforms,
World Series items and, yes,
signed baseballs. I contacted
the business, and it will provide you with a free appraisal
of your baseballs. Contact is

Though the job market has improved in recent years, many men
and women are still out of work. Perhaps most troubling, many of
those people are age 55 and older who are fearful of an uncertain
future and a job market where they are seemingly overlooked. According to a 2012 study from the Government Accountability Office, the number of long-term unemployed people age 55 and older
has more than doubled since the onset of the recession.
For many unemployed men and women over the age of 50, the
harsh reality of a job market that does not value their experience or
skill set is deeply disconcerting. But as difficult as the job market
can be for older men and women, its not impossible to find a job,
though it might take some ingenuity and perseverance.
* Dont limit yourself. Those who were victimized by layoffs
should expand their job searches to more than just their previous
fields. While its definitely a good idea to maintain contacts in your
old field and routinely look for openings in that field, its also a
good idea to examine your skill set and experience and find a new
field where these things apply. Chances are your years of experience are transferable to many fields, and redirecting your job hunting efforts to a new line of work might yield opportunities you are
not even aware existed.
* Embrace the 21st century. Many companies or organizations
mistakenly assume that the digital age has passed older workers
by. Workers in their 50s might be unfairly categorized as dinosaurs with no grasp of mobile technology or the latest software
programs. But those applicants who can demonstrate their proficiency in the latest technologies, including mobile technologies
like smartphones, tablets and social media, can put themselves
above fellow applicants.
* Start working. If you are mired in long-term unemployment and
spend every day at home, get out and start working. Volunteering
is a great way to lift your spirits, network with other professionals and maybe even learn of employment opportunities you wont
hear about on the couch at home. And volunteering, be it with a
charity or a professional organization, is a great way to revive your
resume and continue to add accomplishments despite your unemployment.
* Emphasize your age. Many unemployed men and women over
50 tend to look at their age as a hindrance that is preventing them
from finding gainful employment. But your age can be an advan-
