Michelle and I were saddened to hear of the passing of Marion Barry. Marion was born a
sharecropper's son, came of age during the Civil Rights movement, and became a fixture
in D.C. politics for decades. As a leader with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating
Committee, Marion helped advance the cause of civil rights for all. During his decades in
elected office in D.C., he put in place historic programs to lift working people out of
poverty, expand opportunity, and begin to make real the promise of home rule. Through a
storied, at times tumultuous life and career, he earned the love and respect of countless
Washingtonians, and Michelle and I extend our deepest sympathies to Marion's family,
friends and constituents today.
Statement of President Barack Obama
on the Passing of Former DC Mayor,
and Ward 8 City Councilman Marion Barry, Jr.
I am deeply saddened by the passing of Marion Barry Mayor for life. We talked just last
week about his book and we did a radio show together. Marion Barry is on the honor roll
of freedom fighters. When freedom called he answered the bell. God let him down easy.
He has earned his rest. He changed this nation for the better. From the plantations of Itta
Bena, Mississippi to becoming chemistry major at Fisk University he finally lived and died
in office with a special place in the hearts of the people. He redeemed people and was
redeemed by the people. As a freedom fighter, he was at the first big meeting at Shaw
University in 1960. He dedicated his life to the civil rights movement and contributed to
the laws that we now all benefit from the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting
Rights Act. He was never confused about the political and cultural power of racism as a
weapon of mass destruction, but was a great coalition builder. He became a community
organizer in Washington, DC, which eventually led to his becoming the elected Mayor
over and over again, supplying first-time jobs for the youth, opening new employment
opportunities for adults and supplying business contracts we had never known before.
He had a special impact on telecommunications and was a big factor in the rise of Bob
Johnson and BET and Kathy Hughes from local WOL Radio to her national impact
through Reach One urban radio and TV One. He hosted the kick-off of my campaign on
November 3, 1983 and was a co-chair of my 1984 presidential campaign as we sought to
open the road and eventually paved the way to the White House in 2008. He put my
name in nomination in San Francisco. He had a place deep in the hearts of the people and
they never let go of each other. He fell down, but the ground is no place for a champion,
so he got back up and was elected DC Mayor again and then became a representative of
Ward 8 in the DC City Council. He died as a representative of the people. He served his
time well and his name will go high up on the honor roll of freedom fighters. No southern
governor or senator has a place higher on the honor roll of freedom and justice or
contributed more to bringing positive change to America. He took on a southern
segregationist establishment and prevailed. He stood with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and
Nelson Mandela in the struggle for freedom and justice and prevailed. He helped to lead
the fight for DC statehood. He lived and died as a voice for the voiceless.

Obituary
The Honorable Marion Barry, Jr. began his
life's journey on March 6, 1936. He was the eldest child born to
the late Mrs. Mattie Cummings and Marion Barry, Sr. in Itta Bena,
Mississippi. As the son of sharecroppers and domestic workers,
he developed a strong work ethic. By age five, he would
accompany his mother to the Delta cotton fields from dusk until
dawn
At age 8 Barry with his mother moved to Memphis, Tennessee
where in his early school years his academic excellence and
analytical skills began to emerge and blossom as he was a
consistent honor roll student and achieved the highest rank as a
Boy Scout - an Eagle scout.
Later enrolling in Lemoyne-Owen College his leadership skills
catapulted him into the forefront as he became president of the NAACP Youth Council and
delivered an opening speech prior to an address by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In the fall of 1960, after graduating with a Master of Science degree in Chemistry, Barry enrolled
at the University of Kansas, pursuing a doctorate in Chemistry. He later transferred to the
University of Tennessee at Knoxville where he was the only African-American among 3,000
students. By 1964, Barry had completed all of the course work for a doctorate degree in
Chemistry. His God-given fervor for justice, fairness and equality for the downtrodden led him
to forego completion of his doctoral dissertation in chemistry to join the "movement" full-time.
As such, he shortly became the first chair of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee
(SNCC).
He then moved to the D.C. Field office of SNCC and immediately joined the Free DC Movement,
often holding clandestine meetings at Ed Murphy's Supper Club with such local and national
freedom fighters as the Honorable Willie Hardy, Lawrence Guyot, Stokely Carmichael, Rev.
Willie Wilson and others. Thus was launched Marion Barry's illustrious, dynamic and powerful
political career in our Nation's Capital.
In 1972, Barry married Mary Treadwell and won his first election as the President of the D.C.
School Board. His unique and unparalled organizing skills came forth as he unified a greatly
splintered school board.
In 1974 in the very first election under Home Rule, he won a city-wide at large seat on the D.C.
City Council. In 1978 he married Effi Slaughter, Christopher's mother. Also in 1978, he
launched his first campaign for mayor and in a victory unexpected by many, he rose to
prominence as a black mayor that the growing number of black mayors sought to emulate as
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA CELEBRATION OF THE JOURNEY OF MAYOR FOR LIFE MARION BARRY, JR.
their model. He was sworn in by the first African American Supreme Court Justice, the
Honorable Thurgood Marshall.
In his first year as mayor he created the Summer Youth Act of 1979, a program that has
provided more than 1000,000 jobs for DC youth.
In 1982, Barry was re-elected mayor by a landslide, garnering 82 per cent of the vote.
In 1984, he rose to national prominence, once again, as he nominated his good friend Rev.
Jesse L. Jackson for president of the United States at the Democratic National Convention.
In 1986, this giant of a leader, organizer and fierce champion of the least among us was elected
to an unprecedented third term as mayor as he begun to be called "mayor for life".
In these three terms as mayor Barry shaped the District of Columbia into the thriving vibrant
city that it is today. He collaborated with Wizards owner in insuring the building of the MCI
Center (Verizon Center) which spurred the revitalization of the now bustling downtown D.C.
During his several terms as mayor, he pioneered the resurgence of the U Street corridor, the
rebirth of H Street, Chinatown and the current Renaissance taking place in Anacostia.
Marion Barry was a courageous champion of senior citizens, youth, minority businesses,
affordable housing, and contractual and hiring practices that afforded local and minority
residents consideration. A hallmark of his political legacy was that he spearheaded the
requirement that all government contracts include a mandatory 35 per cent participation for
minority-owned companies. He was the catalyst for the expansion of the District's middle
class, insisting that professional positions in the government and private sector be filled by
minorities he also created the Home Purchase Assistance Program(HPAP), which allowed
many African-American residents to purchase their first home.
Internationally, this astounding social justice advocate and politician worked with Rev. Leon
Sullivan in establishing the African Summit, which fostered economic, political and cultural
exchange between African heads of state and African American leaders.
His legacy spanned 52 years of public service which demonstrates his phenomenal leadership
and trend-setting attributes. In the annals of history it must be recorded that he was one who
loved his fellow and was a true drum major for justice.
This obituary tells only a very small part of the amazing life of Mayor Barry. Much more is told
by him in his book at Amazon, Mayor for Life: The Incredible Story of Marion Barry, Jr.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife Cora Barry, his son Christopher, Gloria Driver, his
only surviving sister, and a great host of friends and supporters.
