Bargoed, Blackwood, Caerphilly, Cross Keys, Newbridge and Ystrad Mynach

Arrests
following
fuel theft
FIVE people have been arrested following recent fuel
thefts from industrial estates
in the Caerphilly area.
Three men, aged 23, 26 and
44, and one woman, 45, from
the Rhymney area and a
man, 21, from the Caerphilly
area have been arrested for
theft and bailed.
Detective inspector Nick
Wilkie said: Officers have
been targeting their patrols on industrial estates
throughout Caerphilly. We
are now working to help prevent further crimes taking
place and bringing offenders
to justice by using forensic
marking technology.
Anyone attempting to steal
fuel will be covered in an
invisible forensic marking
substance, which cannot be
washed off. Forensic marking technology used in each
location is unique, meaning
thieves who steal fuel will
be covered in a substance
that places them at the exact
scene of the crime.
Anyone arrested for fuel
theft will be examined for
traces of the forensic marking technology through our
UV scanning cell in Gwent.
Detective inspector Wilkie
added: The theft of fuel is
very dangerous. Please report any suspicious activity.

INQUEST: Matthew Williams, 34, who died at the Sirhowy Arms Hotel in Argoed.

Town could lose

its council ofice
AROUND 400 jobs are set to
move from Pontllanfraith
from February 2016, under
plans to close the Caerphilly
council office there.
The councils policy and
scrutiny committee agreed at
a special meeting to support
the closure among a range
of savings proposed in the
2015/16 budget.
But Pontllanfraiths three
county borough councillors
Mike Adams, Colin Gordon
and Gez Kirby are against
the proposal, fearing it could
affect Islwyn residents who
use services at Ty Pontllanfraith.
Cllr Kirby, who spoke at the
committee meeting, also believes a move will hit the local economy. He said: We all
recognise our councils need
to make savings because of

ernments cuts.
But people in Pontllanfraith and across Islwyn value access to council services
at Pontllanfraith House.
I hope Islwyn residents
will have their say about this
plan in response to our councils public consultation on
budget proposals, before a final decision is made.
That decision is due next
February, when the council
meets to set its 2015/16 budget.
Council spending must be
cut by around 40million during the next three years, and
closing Ty Pontllanfraith is

an attractive proposal for two

key financial reasons.
Moving the services currently provided there will,
according to a policy and
scrutiny committee report,
save 736,000 a year in running and other costs, while
a cleared site has the potential for sale as a highly desirable residential development
site with a maximum 2.5m
value.
It is proposed that should
the
decision
to
close
be
ratified, then
services
provided
there
-
public
protection, planning and

countryside, public and community services, housing,

and engineering and transportation would be moved
to existing sites in Tredomen,
Penmaen, and Tir-y-Berth.
The report acknowledges
that while there may be some
concerns, the offices are not
used by the general public in
great numbers, modern technology enables people to communicate with the council in
other ways, and there are other council offices in the area.
It also highlights
a
significant
and
highcost
repair
liability for
Ty Pontllanfraith, which
was built in
1977.

THE cause of the death

of Matthew Williams
the man at the centre of a
probe into the murder in
Argoed last month of Cerys
Yemm remains unascertained, an inquest was told
last week.
Senior coroner for Gwent
David Bowen was told at
a hearing in Newport on
Thursday that following a
post-mortem examination
of Williams body, which
was carried out at the University Hospital of Wales in
Cardiff, further toxicological and other tests would be
required to try to determine
the cause of the 34-yearolds death.
He had been arrested after
police officers went to the
Sirhowy Arms Hotel in Argoed a bed and breakfast
establishment for the homeless where Williams, previously in prison, had been
staying for three weeks
at 1.23am on Thursday, November 6.
Shortly after his arrest he
had become unresponsive
and despite the efforts of police officers and paramedics
to revive him, he was subsequently pronounced dead.
Mr Bowen adjourned the
inquest until April 3 next
year, but stressed that does
not necessarily mean that
the final hearing will take
place on that date.

A CAERPHILLY resident has been taken to court by Caerphilly County Borough Council for a fly-tipping offence.
Tanya Kidley, of Lon Yr Odyn, was in
court for an offence of allowing household waste under her control, from a vehicle registered to her, to be abandoned
on land at Penytwyn Isaf, Caerphilly.

Kidley, 35, appeared at Newport Magistrates Court on November 21. She

admitted the offence and was ordered to
pay a fine of 185, together with costs of
232.12 and a 20 victim surcharge.
Councillor David Poole, cabinet member for community and leisure services,
said: This successful prosecution is another indication of our commitment to
taking action against those who commit
environmental crime such as this.
I hope this conviction, the fine, and
the subsequent adverse publicity will
discourage other potential fly-tippers.
Offenders of fly-tipping can face fines
of up to 50,000 and imprisonment.

FAMILIES are invited to get

their creativity flowing this
weekend at the last lanternmaking workshop at
Caerphilly Leisure Centre.

December 18, at 6.30pm.

Caerphilly Leisure Centre

will host the last of its free
lantern making workshops
between 10am and 5pm on
Saturday and Sunday.

The Independent Police
Complaints Commission is
carrying out an investigation into the circumstances
of Williams arrest, as police
officers had discharged a
Taser at him while carrying
it out.
Miss Yemm, aged 22, was
found dead at the Sirhowy
Arms Hotel during the same
police call-out.
The incident has horrified
residents in the quiet village, near Blackwood, and
has made headlines around
the world.
The opening of the inquest into her death, held
on Thursday, November 20,
also in Newport, was told
that the provisional findings
of a post-mortem examination indicated that she had
died as a result of sharp
force trauma to the face and
neck.
Senior investigating officer in the case, Detective
Chief Superintendent William Davies of Gwent Police,
told that hearing that Miss
Yemm had been found on the
floor in a room at the hotel

The inquest into Miss

SCOUTS from across Gwent

gathered for their annual service at Hope Baptist Church
in Crosskeys on Sunday.
Between 500 and 600 scouts
attended, with each scout
asked to bring a food item to
donate to the local foodbank.
During the service, a new
standard for the 1st Pontywaun Beavers - the youngest
section of the scouting movement - was dedicated by the
officiating minister, the Reverend Paula Parish-Foley.
The district commissioner
for Caerphilly, Rhymney
and Islwyn scouts, Miranda
Young, said: It was lovely to
see this wonderful old church
absolutely crammed with
happy youngsters.
They have picked up on the
last message of their founder
Lord Baden-Powell who said,
The real way to get happiness is by bringing happiness
to other people.
Three new groups have
been formed in 18 months and
the Pontywaun group has, in

the space of a year, gone from

the edge of closure to being a
thriving and proud unit.
Parents are realising that
scouting gives their youngsters a running start in that
it teaches them to be responsible and confident.
First group scout leader
of the 1st Pontywaun, Mike
Buckingham, added: It was
magnificent to see the bond
that scouting has.
I think the children realised that they are part of a
very large movement devoted
not only to improving as a
group, but as individuals too.

A statement from his record label August Day Recordings in

his admission to hospital with

It continues: For the past few

Council survey wins

man a 50 reward
A
LLANBRADACH
resident received an
early Christmas present
when he won 50 for
taking part in a council
survey.
John Berrill was the
lucky resident whose
name was drawn at random, after Caerphilly
County Borough Council asked residents in
Llanbradach, to give
their thoughts on a renewal area programme.
Llanbradach is one of

the areas in the county

borough which has benefited from extensive regeneration after being
granted renewal area
status, which typically
lasts for 10 years.
Renewal areas give
local authorities scope
to improve the housing
and general amenities
of an area, as well as developing effective partnerships with residents
and other public sector
organisations.
They

also secure maximum

impact by increasing
community and market
confidence in the future
of an area.
Councillor
Gerald
Jones, the councils
deputy leader and cabinet member for housing, said: The council
actively encourages the
views of residents on all
its services and were
extremely grateful to
people like Mr Berrill
who give us feedback.

Have you or a
loved one
suffered from
pressure sores?
It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of people develop
pressure sores each year whilst in hospital or private nursing
care. Pressure sores are painful and debilitating and, if left
untreated, can cause serious harm and even death. The cost
to the NHS of treating pressure sores and related conditions
is up to 4bn a year. These are truly shocking statistics when
you consider that in the vast majority of cases pressure sores
can be prevented by proper assessment and nursing care.
Pressure sores are said to affect up to 20 per cent of patients
in acute care, 30 per cent of people in the community and
20 per cent of people in nursing and residential homes. They
can develop within hours and, although generally affect older
people, anyone who is immobile for a period of time can be
at risk. Expectant mothers who have been given an epidural
injection and rendered immobile are a particular risk group,
as are younger people with mobility issues due to illness.
Anyone who has suffered or nursed someone with a
pressure sore will know how very painful and unpleasant the
condition can be. They usually affect the base of the patients
spine (sacrum) or heel and buttocks and cause misery for
months while they are being treated. It is a travesty that in
many cases this pain and suffering has been brought about
needlessly due to a basic lack of nursing care or the failure
to provide the proper pressure relieving equipment, such as
specialist mattresses.

Most people are unaware that they may be able to claim

compensation for the pain and suffering caused by pressure
sores which develop when they are in nursing care. Signiicant
awards of damages have been made to patients who have
developed pressure sores. These awards relect the extent of
the ulcers, and the length of time they have taken to heal. In
some cases the families of deceased patients are also entitled
to compensation when their loved ones developed pressure
sores, even in the later stages of nursing care.
In recent cases a total award of 8,500 was made to a
67 year old man who suffered grade 2 pressure ulcers to
both heels for a period of 2 months. In another case, the
estate of a 77 year old man who developed a grade 3-4 sacral
pressure sore which persisted for 9 months and accelerated
his death, was awarded the sum of 21,500. Within the last
month we have settled a case for a sum in excess of 40,000
for of a young lady who developed a pressure sore when
given an epidural during child birth.
If you or a loved one is suffering or has suffered from a
pressure sore in the last two and a half_years, you should
seek legal advice NOW. We offer a free consultation with
our in house doctor to discuss any concerns, and we are
happy to offer you advice even if you do not wish to pursue a
claim for compensation at this stage.

break her nose and fall

on another woman, causing the latter to break her
cheekbone.
Mr Jones said the array
offence was not dissimilar and happened outside the Court House pub
in Caerphilly on February 23, in the early hours
of the morning.
Mr Jones said Kemps
girlfriend had an argument with two sisters
and he intervened. He
stamped on one girls
head and pushed the other over three times.
In mitigation, barrister Andrew Taylor said:
Both the defendant and
the defendants father
think his girlfriend is
largely responsible for
getting the defendant
into some difficulties.
Mr Taylor added that
Kemp was hoping to start
a new life in West Wales
and leave Caerphilly.
He added: He is a

played for Bristol and in
the Gwent Dragons development team before
becoming disillusioned
with professional rugby.
Recorder Bull QC added: You entered a fight or
a row between your partner and another woman,
your intervention wasnt
as a peace maker but as
an aggressor.
Its an aggravating
factor that you were in
breach of a suspended
sentence.
Recorder Bull added
he had no doubt the
judge who sentenced him
in 2012 warned Kemp he
would have to serve his
sentence if he breached
it.
The nine and six
months sentences will be
served consecutively and
Kemp will serve half before being considered for
release.
He was also ordered
to pay a 120 victim surcharge.

Ex-rugby star inspires pupils

FORMER Wales rugby captain and
British Lions star Gareth Thomas
stepped into the classroom to take
over English lessons at Bedwas
High School.
Working in partnership with
Prospero teaching, Mr Thomas delivered a form of media training
for three classes.
He taught communication skills
in a dynamic way.
Year 11 pupils at the school are
about to embark upon their most
important year of comprehensive
school to date, as they approach

their GCSEs.
When asked if they enjoyed the
session, the pupils said: The session was phenomenal; we learned
skills you can use in everyday life
from a rugby legend.
The session was designed to inspire the youngsters to realise how
important it is to be able to communicate effectively throughout
life.
Mr Thomas commented: I felt
inspired to help young people to
learn what I would consider an essential life skill.

Staff in dress
down days aid
foodbanks
FOODBANKS in the Caerphilly county
borough have received a helping hand
this Christmas, thanks to generous donations from council staff.
Staff from across Caerphilly County
Borough Council took part in a Fashion
for Food day recently where they donated items of food in exchange for dressing down.
Fashion for Food is an annual appeal
held by the authority and is in its third
year. It was co-ordinated by the councils
Caerphilly Homes team, responsible for
housing in the county borough.
All donated food was distributed
equally to foodbanks in Blackwood,
Caerphilly, New Tredegar and Risca,
which all rely upon donations from local people.
Cllr Gerald Jones, deputy leader and
cabinet member for housing, said:
Weve seen a stark increase in the number of people relying upon food banks in
recent years. Food banks in the county
borough offer a lifeline to many local
people, particularly during the Christmas period, and the council is always
keen to offer support in any way it can.
Again this year, the generosity of
council staff and businesses has been
overwhelming and I would personally
like to thank everyone who donated to
this worthy cause, along with those people who helped with the appeal.

Heartless theft

I want the youngsters to understand that communications skills

are so vitally important to progress both on a professional and
personal level. I can draw from
my own experiences with the media and help people learn from my
mistakes.
The school has confirmed it has
signed a year-long contract with
Prospero teaching.
Mr Thomas will deliver a variety of sessions on varying topics
through the medium of workshops
and school assemblies.

Schools good
inspection
earns praise
ASSEMBLY Member Lindsay
Whittle praised staff and pupils
at St Helens Catholic Primary
School in Caerphilly after a
good report by inspectors.
In its report, Estyn rated the
286-pupil schools performance
as good with prospects for improvement also said to be good.
The inspectors said that most
pupils made good progress as
they moved through the school
and have strong speaking and
listening skills.
They said that teaching was
good and teachers made use of
a good range of resources while
the planning for the development of Welsh language skills
is said to be thorough.

Many teachers use Welsh in
lessons regularly and pupils
have a good range of opportunities to develop their Welsh
speaking skills, the report
said. Inspectors said there needed to be more opportunities for
pupils to improve their Welsh
writing skills.
Estyn also said that the head
teacher Tim Crosse provided
effective leadership and had

a clear vision for the school,

shared by the whole school
community.
Caerphilly-based Plaid Cymru
AM LindsayWhittle, said: It
was great to read such a positive report with good progress
being made by most pupils as
they go through school. Ive
written to the school to congratulate them on the report.
I was particularly pleased
that the school is highlighted
for making good use of its funding to support pupils who might
under-achieve without it.
The school is in the Landsbury Park area of the county,
recently ranked the most deprived community in Wales.

Diabetics urged to watch treats

THERE are around 10,700 people
living with diabetes in Caerphilly and in the run up to Christmas a charity encourages them
to be mindful of their condition.
Diabetes UK recognises that
following a healthy lifestyle at
Christmas can be a struggle, but
stresses that having the condition should not mean missing
out on traditional festive foods.
However, the charity does not
advise people with diabetes, or
their family or friends, to buy

diabetic foods such as diabetic

Christmas cake or chocolate.
These offer no special benefit
to people with diabetes and will
still affect blood glucose levels.
Dai Williams, national director at Diabetes UK Cymru, said:
We want everyone with diabetes to enjoy their Christmas and
that doesnt mean denying yourself your favourite festive treats.
The key is to plan and be
mindful of how a treat may affect your blood glucose.

The other important thing

to remember is to stay active,
as this will help you to manage
blood glucose levels. For example, take a wintry walk to a local
park or landmark. Alternatively,
you could try ice skating or even
head out to the sales.
One or two high blood glucose
readings shouldnt affect longterm control, but persistently
high readings should be avoided.

Santa set for a festive visit

FATHER Christmas is set to visit
Caerphilly Garden Centre.
He will be there to visit and
speak to children who would like
to learn about toy-making, the
elves, reindeers, Santas workshop, the North Pole and much
more.
He will be at the garden centre
every day until Wednesday, December 24.
Tickets cost 6 per child. Photos
cost 3.25 each or you can pur-

chase four photos for 10.

The length of the queue will
determine the amount of tickets
sold on each given day. The advice
is to try and arrive early to avoid
disappointment.
School parties may be booked
in for the first hour on week days
during term time. This may result
in some delays for ticket holders.

Stylish Vitara delivers plenty of character

THE old Grand Vitara has been
drawing its pension for years, so
its no surprise that its replacement, the road-biased Vitara (no
Grand this time) is light years
ahead.
It gets a new chassis and is a
similar size to Suzukis own SX4
S-Cross, but is shorter, wider and
taller.
Theres also a new part-time fourwheel drive system, a whole bunch
of luxury features including a reversing camera, a panoramic sliding sunroof and climate control,
and its not set to be particularly
expensive, either. Its very obviously led by style and chunkiness
suits it to a tee.
The interior is for the first time
customisable, with different coloured trim inserts and even an
option to have the classy central
analogue clock use Kanji Japanese
symbols instead of nondescript
dashes.
While it shares basic chassis
components with the SX4 S-Cross,
the Vitara has its own character.

It sacrifices boot space and some

rear legroom, but adds width, so
three kids will fit more comfortably. The front seats may as well
have been ripped out of the VIP
lounge on a cruise liner. Theres so
much space up front that youd be
mad to want more.
This is not a small SUV, but even
so, its a pleasant surprise to slot in
and find yourself so high up above
the road. Theres loads of adjustment in the driving position, too.
The diesel engine is strong and
linear, if a little coarse at times. It
picks up well even from low revs
and drags the Vitaras modest
weight out of corners with gusto.
Its slightly squarer footprint next
to the S-Cross makes it feel slightly
nimbler, but the steering calibration on the pre-production car we
drove seemed too light and vague.
Overall, though, the Vitara is a
very pleasant thing to drive.
With final UK prices set to be confirmed exactly, all we know is that
this will be about one trim level
cheaper than the slightly larger S-

Cross, or something like 1,000 less

for a like-for-like trim grade. People with less need for boot space
and more desire for style without
sacrificing all-weather driving stability will love it.

Sporty Porsche 911 GTS is touch of class

AT first glance the 911 GTS
might look very familiar but
this particular variant is all
about the details. In the grand
hierarchy the GTS sits between the quickest normal
variant the Carrera S and
the precision track instrument
that is the GT3. It also bridges
a significant price void.
So your GTS comes with a
more powerful 3.8-litre engine,
unique suspension tuning, the
choice of two or four-wheeldrive, coupe or convertible,
Turbo-look front spoiler, gorgeous centre-lock wheels and
the wider body. Although the
basic shape is the same the
911s looks depend very much
on the model you choose. The
GTS has that bigger Turbo
front bumper with bigger
scoops which makes it look
more aggressive, but this is
balanced by the wider body at
the rear. Add in those beautiful centre-lock alloy wheels
and it looks superb. A Carrera
S looks a little more pure but

its less fussy than the full-on

Turbo.
The 911 in any guise is still
a relatively compact car and
sticks with two proper seats in
the front and occasional seats
in the rear. Its the front seats
you want to be in of course,
and you get leather-trimmed
sports seats as standard.
Being rear-engined the boot
is in the front but its actually
quite spacious.
The key mechanical changes
to the GTS make themselves
felt as soon as you drive away.
With a unique suspension
tune and one that is a little
stiffer than the Carrera S, the
GTS is clearly more focussed.
However the standard-fit Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) means you
can dial up three different
suspension settings to suit the
conditions. The stats show it is
more powerful and faster than
a Carrera S, but as the driver
all you know is that it is a sensationally quick car. The en-

gine crackles away (helped by

the standard sports exhaust)
as the revs rise and you can
rev it hard. When driven hard
the GTSs class shows; sharp
and communicative steering,
unshakeable brakes and beautiful poise. Its hard to want for
anything more.

Travelling by train can be

more costly than driving
COMMUTING by car can be
up to 30 per cent cheaper for
many workers across the UK,
particularly in areas where
train fare increases have risen the most.
Some rail commuters are
now paying 162 per cent more
for their journeys than they
were only a few weeks ago.
Commuting during peak
times prevents many rail
travellers from enjoying the
lower fares, which means
that the car is often the
cheaper option.
A survey by Flexed found
a peak fare from Leeds to
Leicester costs 63.40 for a
return, but a car can cover
the same return journey for
38.52.
Even if the rail user travels during off-peak hours,
the train still costs more at
42.20.
Other findings revealed
that a commuter traveling
via train from Nottingham
to Birmingham would expect to pay 35.50 for a peak
return booked online in advance.
In contrast, a return journey in a car would cost just
20.60.
Many of those interviewed
for the survey said they
could use public transport
or walk or cycle to work but
chose to drive for convenience, safety and comfort.

Major attraction gets set to

honour motor racing heroes
SOME of motor racings
greatest names will be honoured at the inaugural London Classic Car Show when it
opens its doors in a little over
a months time.
One of the major attractions at the show, which runs
from January 8-11 at ExCeL
in Londons docklands, will
be the Motor Sport Hall of
Fame, a tribute to the eight
founding members of motor
racings most exclusive club.
For more than 90 years, Motor Sport magazine has been
faithfully recording all the
major events every month in

breath-testing is 12 tests per

1,000 people, while one in ten
men fail compared to only 7%
of women.
Previous research by Direct Line revealed that 17 per
cent of female motorists have
driven whilst over the limit in
the past year. When asked why
they did this, 14 per cent said
it was due to a perception that
there was little risk of getting
caught.
Gus Park, commercial director of motor at Direct Line,
said Roadside testing is an
important deterrent and helps
improve driver safety by keeping intoxicated motorists off
the road.

With such a small difference between the proportion

of men and women who pass
a breath test, its surprising
to see such a discrepancy in
the overall numbers being
tested.

WOMEN are up to five times

less likely to be breath tested than men, new research
claims.
Via a Freedom of Information request, car insurer
Direct Line discovered that
only 23% of roadside breath
tests are conducted on women, and a lower proportion of
women fail them than men.
Even in north Wales, where
the breath-testing rate is by
far the highest in the country at 72 tests for every 1,000
people between August 2013
and August 2014, women
make up only 29% of those
stopped.

the pages behind its famous

British Racing Green cover.
The magazine inaugurated
its Hall of Fame, recognising
the sports greatest names, in
2010. The display at the London Classic Car Show will allow the public to experience
the idea first hand, for the
first time.
Commenting on the opportunity, Motor Sport editor
Damien Smith said: Having
established the Hall of Fame
as an exclusive club to which
drivers, riders, engineers
and team owners can aspire,
were expanding the concept

beyond a glitzy VIP evening

visitors.
The thrilling display at the
show will turn the spotlight
on eight pillars of the sports
history.
They are F1 world champions Michael Schumacher,
Juan Manual Fangio, Sir
Jackie Stewart, Ayrton Senna, Jim Clark, Enzo Ferrari
and Tazio Nuvolari, plus the
greatest driver never to win
the title, Sir Stirling Moss.

BARGOED RFC picked up where they left

off before the break for the Autumn Internationals with a bonus-point victory
over Tata Steel on the weekend, making
it 10 wins out of 10 and putting the Blues
10 points clear of second-placed Swansea.
The game was forward dominated and
Bargoed opened the scoring on 21 minutes with a penalty try awarded by west
Wales referee Neil Jones following an
illegal attempt to stop a scrum being
driven over at short range. Josh Prosser
converted.
Captain and hooker Leigh Meades added to the score four minutes from half
time, getting an armchair ride from his
forwards as they powered over the line
for an unconverted score. The half time
whistle went with the score at 12-0.
The forwards were soon in the thick of
it again from the start of the second half,
with a driving maul bringing the third
try through prop Rhys Morgan. Prosser
converted to make it 19-0.
Two minutes later, Bargoed were down
to fourteen as Darren Lynch found himself on the sidelines with a yellow card.
Tata couldnt make the extra man count
and the arm-wrestle continued through
the third quarter, with Tata being held at
bay by some staunch Blues defending.
The bonus point try came for Bargoed
as the game entered the final twenty.
The forwards recycled the ball and
Josh Prosser brought Darren Humphries
into the line with a flat pass. Humphries
straightened and slipped a ball to Grant
Rogers, who put Calum Jones into space
to score at the flag. Prosser converted to
make the final score Bargoed 26 Tata 0.
