AT&T DIALS UP ENHANCED WIRELESS COVERAGE IN POPULAR NEW


JERSEY MALLS THIS HOLIDAY
Upgrades to Distributed Antenna Systems Inside Malls as New Jerseyans Go Mobile for
Holiday Shopping
WOODBRIDGE, N.J., DEC., 10, 2014 Consumers are expected to increase spending this holiday
season by more than four percent according to the National Federation Retail Federation*. To ensure
shoppers have the best possible network experience, AT&T** today announced enhancements for its
mobile Internet coverage inside some of New Jerseys most popular shopping malls. AT&T completed
upgrades to Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) inside shopping malls in Woodbridge, Wayne,
Rockaway, Short Hills and Bridgewater.
Were in the height of the holiday shopping season which is a time when we see increased wireless
traffic as shoppers use more of their smartphones and tablets to find the best deals in their favorite
shopping mall, said J. Michael Schweder, Mid-Atlantic President, AT&T. Weve been working expand
our networks inside popular shopping venues across the state to meet the growing use of wireless
data.
Over the Black Friday weekend, AT&T tracked wireless data usage on its DAS networks inside 58
large shopping malls across the country and found that all together customers used approximately
3.1TB of mobile data, which would equate to more than 9 million social media posts with photos
between Thursday, November 27 to Sunday, November 30.
A DAS installation consists of multiple strategically-placed antennas that distribute AT&Ts wireless
network coverage throughout the mall or other venue, providing for more efficient management of

wireless capacity in heavily-trafficked areas. DAS has the ability to provide enhanced, consistent
wireless coverage to customers in indoor or outdoor spaces where geographical limitations terrain,
building construction, etc. or crowd density might otherwise prevent an optimal wireless experience.
The DAS upgrades are part of AT&Ts Project Velocity IP (VIP), a multi-year plan to invest for growth,
announced in 2012. Through this investment, AT&T is supporting its customers growing desire for
high-quality, fast wireless and wired services. As part of Project VIP, AT&T is deploying small cell
technology, macro cells and additional DAS, which will increase the density of our wireless network.
The wireless network densification will further improve network quality and increase spectrum
efficiency.

DAS technology helps improve the mobile Internet experience by shortening the distance a request
must travel. The additional capacity also is expected to help improve call reliability, boost data traffic
capacity and enable more consistent network access to help customers make the most of their AT&T
devices.
AT&Ts focus to deliver the best possible mobile Internet experience goes beyond 4G to embrace
additional connection technologies. AT&T owns and operates more than 34,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots
at popular restaurants, hotels, bookstores and retailers, and provides access to more than 1 million
hotspots globally through roaming agreements. Most AT&T smartphone customers get access to our
entire national Wi-Fi network at no additional cost, and Wi-Fi usage doesnt count against customers
monthly wireless data plans.***
