Audio Essay Reflection

Dr. Erin McLaughlin

Flashback (Reflection)

I think my audio essay with the circumstances I faced throughout the writing
process has been done to the best of my ability. I believe my work has many
strengths but also have weaknesses as well. In overall, I am pleased with the audio
essay I have written and the outcome of the recording.

One of the biggest strengths in my piece of work is the plot. Since it is based on a
true story, describing the events and situations with my senses, sight, hearing and
smell in particular, instead of stating it made it more explicit and vibrant for the
audience. The discrepancy between the lively and mellow tone in the essay I believe
have been conveyed effectively to the audience. Even though the plot does not
follow a chronological order, I think the storyline is clear and developed effectively
throughout the audio essay. Furthermore, the addition of a flashback within the
essay provides a unique element that is both appropriate and effective.

Another area that I thought I did particularly well in was the effective use of literary
devices in the context and target audience of an audio essay. Besides the common
literary devices such as alliteration, personification, metaphor, simile, rhetorical
question, hyperbole, ethos, pathos and logos. I used several other devices that added
a lot of value to the essay. One in particular that I thought was very effective was the
anecdote about my first basketball experience. This does not only help the reader
understand how much it meant but also emphasizes how far the journey was. This is

evident in the essay when it mentions People started giving me high fives. It felt so
foreign, but right at home at the same time. Furthermore, there were multiple
times were I used anaphora, ayndeton, epistrophe, exemplum, climax and
conduplicatio to emphasize the importance of the situation to the reader. Finally,
humor was added throughout the essay to contrast the melancholy tone which was
evident in the use of literary devices such as catachresis, oxymoron and irony. One
example when humor is used is a towering 5 foot 7 inches warrior

Understanding the context and audience of your piece of work is one of the most
important things to know as a writer. Therefore, I used lower register and simple
lexis for the reader to understand easier. The short paragraphs and sentences are
essential in an audio essay to maintain rhythm and pace for it to be appealing to the
audience as well.

My main weakness in my writing process was my inexperience. Audacity and

Garageband were the two applications encouraged for recording. However, I had a
relatively hard time trying to get it to work the way I wanted it. It took a while
before I had the sound I wanted. In addition, I was too accustomed to having a
marking rubric for essays that it was hard for me to pin point the areas that needed
the most improvement.

In overall, I am happy with the piece of work I produced. This audio essay was also a
reminder for me how I got to this point in my life. The journey I went through so far
and how much more I can achieve with hard work and determination.
