Q.1 a m =
1
. So what is the value of m+n?
an
Ans. m+n=0 as
1
= a -n
n
a
So
am =
1
an
a m = a -n
i.e.
m=-n
so
m+n=0

Q.10 Express the numbers appearing in the following statements in the
standard form and rewrite the statements.
(i)Thickness of a metal sheet is 0.007 mm
(ii) The weight of a leaf is 0.0000312 gm
Ans.
(i)
0.007
=7x (10)-3
So
Thickness of a metal sheet is 7 x (10)-3 mm.
(ii) 0.0000312 gm
o.oooo312
=3.12 x (10)-5
So,
The weight of a leaf is 3.12 x (10)-5 gm.

Q.11 A stack of coins has 20 coins of 0.20 mm thickness, another stack has 15
coins of 3.12 x (10)-2 mm thickness.
So, which stack has more thickness?
Ans.
The thickness of first stack= no. of coins x thickness of one coin
=20 x 0.20
= 4 mm
The thickness of the second stack = no. of coins s x thickness of one coin
=15 x 3.12 x (10)-2
=46.80 x (10)-2
= 0.4680 mm
So the first stack has more thickness as 4 > 0.4680

Q.13 Sameer studies History for 3 x (10)-2 hours and studies Maths for 4.12
x (10)-1 hours every day. What is the total number of hours he puts in over a
period of 20 days?
Ans.
The number of hours that Sameer puts in everyday for History
=3 x (10)-2
=0.03 Hrs
The number of hours Sameer puts in every day for Maths
=4.12 x (10)-1
=0.412 Hrs.
So total number of hours of study everyday
=0.03+0.412
=0.442
So the number of hours put in over a period of 20 days
=20 x 0.442
=8.84 Hrs.

Q.14
A conical funnel has a small hole through which 0.00232 ml of liquid leaks out
per minute. So how much of liquid will come out in a span of one hour? If
theres 1 litre of oil, then how much quantity will be left after one hour?
Ans.
The amount of liquid coming out of the funnel in one minute
=0.00232
=2.32 x (10)-3
So, the amount of liquid coming out in one hour(=60 minutes)
=60 x 2.32 x (10)-3
=13.92x (10)-2
=0.1392 ml
So from a funnel having 1 litre (=1000 ml) of oil, the amount that will be left
after one hour
= 1000- 0.1392
=999.8608 ml
