Ice hockey is a team sport played on ice in which two teams of skaters use sticks to shoot a
hard rubber hockey puck into their opponents net to score points and the word hockey
means Hocquet from the old French language which means stick. In this research I will
write about the history of hockey, the game, rink, equipment, periods and overtime and
overshoot, penalties, power play, injuries, and ice hockey in the UAE.
History
The beginning of the game was by James G. Creighton from Nova Scotia in the eastern part
of Canada; he started the ice hockey game in the 1850s. Late in the 1870s two McGill
university students, Robertson and Smith, created the first rules of hockey. In 1880 McGill
University created the first recognized team and they considered this game as a Canadian
national sport and spread it all over the country. Later on the Governor General of Canada
donated the Stanley Cup in 1892, which was first won by the Montreal Amateur Athletic
Association team. Hockey started in the south of the United States in the 1890s, and is known
as a game between Johns Hopkins and Yale Universities in 1895. In 1902 were the first ice
hockey games played in Europe and it was in England; the games were played at the Princes
Skating Club in Knightsbridge. Belgium and France played two international games on March
4, 1905. In 1920, the first time
Olympic Games (Antwerp Summer
Games) included ice hockey only
for men. Women werent accepted
as hockey players in the Olympic
Games until 1992, and in 1998
they made an official first
appearance in Nagano.
The game & rink
Ice hockey is a game between two teams; each team has five players and one goalkeeper on
the ice rink. The players wear ice skates and they can move very fast by it; each player has a
stick and they have to hit the puck into the team opposites goal to score a point and the
goalkeeper tries to prevent them.
The ice rink should be two hundred feet long and eighty five feet wide; in the picture below
all the dimensions are shown. The rink should be surrounded with boards and it has to be
between forty to forty eight inches from the ice surface. There are five lines on the ice, two
of them at the end on the ice for goal lines. The two lines in the middle with dark color are
separating the offensive/defensive zones from the center line and the neutral zone.

the lower edge of the helmet is not
more than one finger-width above the
eyebrows; there should only be
enough room between the strap and
the chin to insert one finger.

Puck

The material of the puck should be

approved by the international Ice
Hockey Federation (IIHF). The color of
the puck should be black and 2.54cm
thick and 7.62cm in diameter and the
weigh must be between 156 and 170g.
The maximum speed can reach it more
than 150km/h.

Sticks

Usually sticks are made of aluminum or

plastic or wood and should not be
curved more than 1.5cm.

Visor

A clear plastic shield attached to the

helmet.

Periods, overtime and overshoot

Ice hockey game is divided into three periods; each period is twenty minutes, and between
each period there is a fifteen minutes intermission. If the three periods are finished and the
game still tied, there will be an overtime period, and if any goal is scored in this period the
game is over. If the overtime period is finished and the game still tied, there will be a
shootout, each team having three shooters. When the three shooters are done the game
will be finished, with the team which has more score; if they have the same, the game will
still be tied, then it will move to the sudden death shootout; it means throw against throw.
The game will finish if one of the teams scored a goal and the other team didnt.
In National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, the overtime is five minutes with 4-on-4
hockey; if the overtime is finished and the game still tied there will be a shootout to get the
result. In NHL playoff hockey, the overtime is twenty minutes with 5-on-5 hockey; the game
will not be over until a goal is scored because there is no shootout.
Penalties
There are five types of penalties in the ice hockey game, each one having a different time.
First penalty is two minutes minor penalties; the player gets it when he does hooking,
slashing, delay of game, interference, goaltender interference, tripping, roughing, elbowing,
boarding, cross checking, charging, holding, high sticking, kneeing, check from behind,
spearing, unsportsmanlike conduct, too many men on the ice. Second penalty is four minute
double penalty; the player gets it when any player draws blood because of the minor
penalty. Third penalty is five minute major penalty; the player should stay in the penalty box

for five minutes; that happens if the player is fighting, charging, hitting from behind, and
hitting to the head. The fourth penalty is ten minute misconduct penalty; the player should
stay in the penalty box for ten minutes; that happens if the player is fighting, charging,
hitting from behind, unsportsmanlike conduct, and hitting to the head. Fifth penalty is game
misconduct penalty; the player gets it if he does charging, hitting from behind, spearing,
unsportsmanlike conduct, and hitting to the head, or if the player fights three times in the
game and he will ejected from the game.
The penalty shot: the shooter starts from the middle of the ice and only one time.
Power play
If a team is penalized, the other team will get a power play, meaning the other team will be short
handed for a distinct amount of time (refer to penalties). If the team with power play scores a goal,
the power play is over; if the short handed team scores a goal, the power play is not over.

Injuries
Ice hockey injuries are common and minor, if the players wear their safety equipment
properly including everything mentioned above. Unless some of the players did something
disorderly then there may happen major injuries. The common ice hockey pain and injuries
are sprain and strain, cuts and lacerations, bruises and contusions, muscle cramps, delayedonset muscle soreness, and overtraining syndrome.
Ice hockey in the UAE
Ice hockey sport is one of the modern games in the UAE, where it was launched and got
recognition in December 1998. The story of the hockey starts in the United Arab Emirates
when the skating hobby spread between numbers of young Emirati people; the reason of
this spread was the availability of ice rinks in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Dubai. After they
learned how to ski on the ice and the number of people increased, they desired to learn
more about this hobby and they started learning about ice hockey. Foreign residents from
the countries which are famous in hockey were very helpful to teach the local people about
the laws, terms and skills of the game. The United Arab Emirates is a member of the
International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) since the 10th of May 2001. The total players
number is 900, 342 for male players, 443 for junior players, 115 for female players and 21
referees. The UAE has 9 indoor ice rinks and zero outdoor ice rinks.

Recommendations
As a conclusion, I would like to recommend learning new things such as ice hockey game. It is a very
healthy and nice game but on condition of safety and without breaking the rules of the game.
