TOEFL TEST PREPARATION


Institution

: Glamorous English Course

A. Context
Learners profile:
Ms. Sherina is 17 years old, fresh graduated from senior high
school. Recently, she passed the National Selection Entering State
University (SNMPTN), and accepted in English Education Department at
Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta.
About 1-2 months later, she will get the TOEFL (Test of English as
Foreign Language) test. She wants get score above 500. Hopefully, she
can get more than 550, because she wants get a scholarship to study in
America, Australia, or etc. she does not have English proficiency because
she never takes an English Course.

B. Needs Analysis
Before having the course, we made a TOEFL test simulation to the
learner, to analyze where the learners difficulty in doing TOEFL test.
After that, we had interviewed her to know what her weakness in English,
especially when she did the TOEFL test simulation.
The most difficulty is in grammar. She does not know about the
grammar well, so she could not understand what is the text tell about and
what she listening about.
So, the learner should have more knowledge about grammar before
she goes to TOEFL sections. After that, she goes to listening
comprehension section, structure and written expression section, and
reading comprehension section. Furthermore, the purpose of she takes this
course is to get TOEFL score above 550.

C. Goals
The learner can do all section in TOEFL test and gets TOEFL score above
550.

D. Objectives
By the End of this course, learner is supposed to:
1. Understanding about grammar which usually appear in TOEFL test.
2. Understanding and being able to do listening comprehension section in
TOEFL test.
3. Understanding and being able to do structure and written expression
section in TOEFL test.
4. Understanding and being able to do reading comprehension section in
TOEFL test.

Course Rationale
This Glamorous English Course is designed for fresh graduated

students from Senior High School, Ms. Sherina who will takes a TOEFL
test and must gets score above 500 as a one of some requirements to do
final assignment in English Education Department at Syarif Hidayatullah
State Islamic University Jakarta.
This course is to teach the student to have ability to do all of
section in TOEFL test correctness, they are listening comprehension
section,

structure

and

written

expression

section,

and

reading

comprehension section. Before that, the learner will be teach the grammar
and some vocabulary which usually appear in TOEFL exam.
The kind of teaching and learning in this course will be applied by
focusing in four parts: the first is grammar; the second is listening
comprehension; the third is structure and written expression; the forth is
reading comprehension; and the last is TOEFL test simulation. We also
use the Audio-Lingual Method to make learner learn easily in listening.

Entry and Exit Level


According to the result of the TOEFL test simulation before started

this courses, she got TOEFL score 436, so she is suitable to start from
intermediate level. The result of the course is hopefully can increase her
TOEFL score above 550.

Scope and Sequence


Prerequisite Learning

A certain set of grammar items which usually appear in TOEFL


test will be taught as a prerequisite to do any section in TOEFL test. And,
the learner will be given many examples of questions in every chapter and
sub-chapter related with what recently taught. Also example questions in
every section before do the TOEFL test simulation.
Because of that, the learner will use a book for a module by the
title 100% Best Guide to TOEFL.

Course Structure

A. Syllabus Framework
The syllabus which is used in this course is grammatical syllabus.
Grammatical syllabus used because this course taught the learner about
grammar which is usually appear in TOEFL test.

B. Allocation Learning Time


Course time: One month (3 meetings x 1 week) or 12 meetings.
1 meeting = 150 minutes.

The observation that we gave before started the course is TOEFL test simulation
from book 100% Best Guide to TOEFL.

We also had interviewed her after having TOEFL test simulation. These are the
following question:
Whats your most difficulty when youre doing TOEFL test
simulation?
All of sections are difficult, because I did not understand well in grammar,
so I could not do well. Maybe I must be taught about grammar before go
to TOEFL.
What kind of teacher do you want to be taught by?
I like the teacher who are smart, creative, communicative, and can
stimulate the learner to be active in the class.

In what condition do you like to learn in the class?


In the situation where the teacher can communicate nicely when teaching
in the class and the learner learn actively. Also, I want learn in quiet class,
so I can understand what the teacher taught.
What the purposes of you take this course?
I want to get TOEFL score above 550.
