PREFACE

For the first, let us say thank God because his almighty the authors can
arrange a cross culture papers under the title Gayo Tribes. Blessings and greetings
always devoted bestowed on our Prophet Muhammad SAW.
Gayo Tribes culture themed paper is structured in order to determine what
kind of culture more in Gayo Tribes and this paper aims to complete the task of EFN
(English for Nursing) I in the first semester of Nursery Program FKUB.
We hope this paper can be accepted with all its shortcomings. For that critics
and suggestions for improvement are always hoped. Dont forget, the authors say
thanks to the course lecturers who have guided us. And all of the member of group
and K3LN class who help to finish this work.

CHAPTER II

Gayo tribe is ethnic group living in highlands of Aceh Province. Gayo Tribe
majority lives in idle Aceh district (25%), Bener meriah (25%), Gayo Lues (25%).
Based from a Geologist from Bali that did a research at idle Aceh, Gayo tribe is a
primitive ethnic group. Gayo tribe is a muslim religion and they are known as their
strong religion.
2.1 Language
The Gayonese use Gayo language in gayo Lues, gayo Lut, or even in gayo
Alas. All of them use gayo language as their daily language. But, like other language
in the wolrd, Gayo language have an variation. Until know, theres two dialect in
Gayo, Gayo Lut dialect and Gayo Lues dialect. These dialect is also divided into
some sub dialect, such as Bukit sub dialect, deret sub dialect, and etc. Besides that, in
Blangkejeren area, most of Gayos people use Alas language as their daily language.
2.2 Norms and Believe
In the past, Gayo society have formulated their principles of traditions that is
called Kemalun ni Edet. These tradition principles consist of self esteem (shy) that
have to be guard, applied and be maintained by certain relative group, family group,
clan, and even bigger groups.
There are four tradision principles, that is
a. Denie-terpancang is a self esteem that regards to our rights of a territory.
b. Naha Teraku is a self esteem that regards to a valid position.
c. Bela mutan is a self esteem that is disturbed because of another member of
that group that has been hurt or even murderd

d. Malu tertawan is a self esteem that is disturbed because of women from a


member of their group been disturb or been slander by others.
Like other society in highland, the characteristic of Gayo is more calmly and not
always expressive compare other society of Aceh on the seaside. So dont worry to
ask or to start a conversasion with peoples of Gayo because they really like guest,
with note still maintaining their local tradision.

Famous Gayo Society firmly implement the Islamic Sharia with its own local
wisdom. Despite massive Shariah law enforcement is not as tight as in Banda Aceh,
Aceh or other coastal regions. So, do not be surprised if in Takengon highlands or
you do not see as much of Sharia police in Banda Aceh, Islamic nuances are felt in
the city. There are no specific rules to enjoy the beautiful city of Takengon and the
Gayo highlands. Pretty dress modestly, then the public will accept you in Gayo with a
warm smile.
Cultural value system Gayo put esteem (mukemel) as a primary value. To
achieve the level of self-esteem, one must practice or refer to a number of supporting
value: tertip (rules / obey the rules), setie (commitment), Semayang-gemasih
(sympathetic), mutentu (professional), amanah (integrity), the genap-mupakat
(democratic), alang-Tulung (empathic). To realize the development of the seven
value drivers support necessary values, which according Melalatoa (1982) called the
competitive spirit to do good, bersikekemelen. Here's a brief description of the
proposed system value.
2.2.1

Mukemel

Mukemel concept regard to self-esteem. The meaning kemel basically means


shame. In its application ashamed to be understood in a broader sense, to include selfesteem or Iffah meaning in the concept of moral studies. This concept refers to the
ability to guard against falling prey to the thoughts and actions that can lead to loss of
self-esteem. A person who has consistently maintained an attitude of self-esteem

mukemel to prevent themselves or their families trapped in disgraceful acts contrary


to his religious beliefs and norms customs.
2.2.2

Tertib

This word is derived from the Arabic, tartib, meaning irregular or


sequentially. In fiqh concepts, terms and conditions regarding the orderly harmony in
the implementation of worship, where failure to meet this requirement may cancel or
at least reduce the perfection of execution worship. In the context of the Gayo,
orderly with respect to caution that the actions and treatment done by considering the
context. One of the Gayo language expression states, orderly bermejelis, umet
bermulie (ie, regularity in life as a prerequisite to realize the glory of the people). This
expression confirms that in a community that is diverse, both in terms of skills,
interests, trends, experiences and age differences in the discipline required to manage
the realization of social harmony.
2.2.3

Setie

Setie means committed, steadfast or loyal establishment. This word refers to an


attitude that is not easy to give up on behalf of the truth believed. Commitment
agreed upon in meetings, for example, requires the determination to make it happen
attitude. In the words of Gayo mentioned, setie murip, gemasih papa, which confirms
the commitment shared loyalty is key to the completion of any heavy challenges. In
the words of others mentioned, ike Musara Jemma ate, ungke feels gule. Ike church

2.2.4

Semayang-gemasih

Cultural values in the concepts Gayo Semayang-gemasih, meaning love. This


concept is related to the behavior of commendable in Islam, even two good name of

Allah (Asmaul Husna) in the Qur'an is Merciful (al-Rahman) and Most Merciful (alRahim). In the words of the language Gayo, value Semayang-gemasih are listed in
the proverb; ; kasih enti lanih, sayang enti lelang, which deals with the importance
of the ability to act proportionately in compassion. Compassion is not accompanied
by the

2.2.5

Mutentu

Cultural values mutentu means diligent, tenacious, hard working or carrying out

important indicator in assessing the character and influence the beliefs of others.
Someone who already perform acts that harm the trust given to him will handicap
their social status in the association.
2.2.6

Amanah

Amanah comes from the Arabic, meaning reliable, honest and responsible.
Amanah related to the correspondence between words and deeds, harmony between
ideals and reality. The nature of trust evidenced by the ability or confidence to fulfill
the task entrusted the responsibility, conformity of words and deeds, to establish
justice, sincere and honest, controlling lust (Ibrahim and Pinan, 2010).
2.2.7

Genap-Mupakat

Genap-mupakat or keramat-mupakat is Gayo cultural values

related to the

realization of social harmony. Genap-mupakat a manifestation principle of


consultation to find the best solution. Hurgronje (1992: iv) states that share
characteristics of Gayo society as an independent republic, and the courage to express
opinions without too attached power hierarchy, as applicable in a feudal society. In

the perspective of Gayo society, the use of consultation is an important part that must
be considered in deciding the issues concerning the lives of the public.
2.2.8

Alang-Tulung

The cultural value of Gayo is this attitude mutual assistance, as reflected in the
expression of alang-tolong berat-berbantu. This value confirms the existence of
humans as social beings, humans need social interaction that enables the process of
giving and receiving (give and take, not take and give as it is often called) as the glue
of social cohesion.
2.2.9

Bersikekemelen

To actualize chitin cultural values of Gayo, Melalatoa (1982) revealed the value
of the driving necessity, bersikekemelen or competitive stance in the practice of the
seven values of supporting, in religious language is known as the principle of

2.3 Clothing

Local wisdom or philosophy can also be seen in the Gayo Batik motif. First, the

2.4 Lifestyle
Communities living in the Community Gayo called kampong. Each village is
headed by an gecik. Collection of several villages called kemukiman, led by mukim.
Traditional governance system of the form element called sarak Opat leadership,

A village is usually inhabited by several groups of clans (split). Members of the
sides are derived from a common ancestor, they know each other and develop
relationships remain in various ceremonies. Lines drawn on the basis of patrilineal
descent. Prevailing mating system is based on the tradition of exogamy sides, with
custom settled after marriage patrilocal (juelen) or matrilocal (angkap).

2.5 Art and Culture
A cultural element that never falldown in Gayo society is art, which almost never
stagnate even tend to thrive. Gayo famous art form, such as dance and art tells saman
called Didong. In addition to entertainment and recreation, art forms it has the
function of ritual, education, information, as well as a means of maintaining balance
and social structure of society. In addition there is also a form of art like: Dance
bines, Guel Dance, Dance munalu, Sebuku (pepongoten), teachers Didong and
