Packer/PBR or Tubing Anchor?

Is it essential to isolate
annulus downhole?
(Regulations, safety,
corrosion control
or use of annulus)

No

Is it desirable to isolate
annulus downhole?
(Flow improvement,
corrosion control
isolate squeeze
perforations or liner?)

Yes

Is annular flow
most cost effective
and productive than
tubing flow?

No

Yes

Will well be
produced on rod
pump within 5 years?

No

Yes

Yes

Will zone be produced on

pump with free gas at intake
within 5 years

No

Evaluate gas venting options

(packerless completions, or annulus
vs. multi-strings)

Yes

Unanchored Tubing

No
Is fullbore access to a liner required?
(Access to small bore pipe, scale/asphaltene
removal, or to avoid flow restrictions)

Yes

Does a PBR offer advantages over a

large bore packer? (eg max through bore
or liner cap isolation)
No

No

Can packer be set well above top pay without limiting functional
requirements for isolation, well kill, artificial lift and
flow optimization?

No

Yes

Will production logging be required

under flowing conditions?

Polished Bore Receptacle

(PBR) Completion

PACKER COMPLETION
Consider benefits and problems with shallow
setting depth (below SSV, above top of liner
and above recompletion targets)

PACKER COMPLETION
Set packer so tubing shoe is
50 to 100 ft above perforations

No

Yes

Yes

PACKER COMPLETION
Minimum safe distance between packer
and perforations 5 ft for wireline correlations
0.2% depth for tubing packers

Packer Selection - Which type?

Selection of one type in preference to another for a given
application should be based on :

designing for those parameters critical to the successful

performance of this equipment in that completion
select the packer which most economically satisfies the
conditions dictated by each individual situation.

Packer Selection Process

Are severe or hostile
conditions expected?
(Dp>5000 psi and T > 300F)
(Axial Load > 50,000 lbs)
(H2S > 10%)
No
Will workovers likely involve
packer removal within 10
years or fullbore access to
pay zone?
Yes
Do throughbore
requirements preclude
use of standard
retrievable packers?

No

interest limited
by buckled or

Yes

Do unique conditions merit

use of a special retrievable
packer or PBR?

Yes

Could a PBR be used to provide

fullbore access to pay zone?

Running the Completion String

Retrievable Packers
Be careful not to swab in the well when pulling out packer
straight pull release packers may prematurely shear and release
due to tubing contraction
pressure test may set packer
deposits may render packer nonretrievable
