English Assignment

This study takes place in a medium sized Primary School in the suburbs of a city.
The school has a total of 272 pupils with 29 staff in total.

The school has achieved outstanding in every area in their latest Ofsted
inspection, the school’s academic results between 2005 and 2008 placed them
as one of the top schools nationally.

Over the four years nearly 100% of the children achieved Level 4 in English,
Mathematics, and Science with high percentages achieving the top grade of
Level 5.

The school discusses in their prospectus how they aim to teach all children to
read fluently with enjoyment. They aspire to have every child working
confidently in speech and writing in a variety of ways according to their
audience.

The setting encourages listening skills from the start of nursery with lots of
poems, rhymes and songs and lots of opportunity for children to talk and listen in
small groups. They also offer a daily library session allowing children the
independence to choose their own books which they can then take home.

As each child becomes ready to begin to read independently, graded reading

books are introduced from the school’s graded reading scheme.

As with reading, when children become aware of print, writing is encouraged:

copy writing for correct formation of letters, factual writing, free writing and
poetry composition all have a place here. Children are taught to join letters from
the earliest stage.

The school’s schemes of work are planned with reference to the National Literacy
Framework and The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

With regards to the children chosen for this study I have decided to focus on the
same two children for both the reading and writing. The children are both
September starters in a reception class which until January had twenty children
in although has now increased to thirty children.
