ARU 5001 - OFFICE TRAINING

(Pre-requisite: AR 4008 Architectural Design and Field Tour - VIII)

Course Objectives:

The students are required to undergo compulsory internship training in the office of a competent practicing
architect registered with the Council of architecture or in the architectural wing/ department of a governmental,
private or non-governmental voluntary organization namely CPWD, state PWD, Department or Board for Urban
Planning, and NGOs involved in Housing, Urban Development, Planning, or Environmental Planning etc with
senior architects in its roll for the duration of one semester. During this period the student is expected to obtain:

An exposure to the general working of the architects office.


Application of theoretical knowledge to actual design projects under the supervision of the
practicing Architect.
Preparation of Corporation drawings and working details for a real project.
Exposure and Training in project management
Improve skills in presentation through training in CAD /Other Software and model making.

Students are expected to identify a competent registered practicing architect under whom they wish to train for the
entire semester, obtain a confirmation letter and submit the same to the Internship coordinator. The department shall
go through the credentials of the training organizations before permitting any student to take up the internship /
practical training with those organizations. The training shall be undertaken strictly as per the rules/guidelines listed
in the Internship manual prepared by the Department.
Students are required to be involved in the following work in the office: Design process - Sketch design, Preparation
of Corporation drawings and Working Drawings, Detailing such as interior design, landscaping etc, Estimation and
specifications, CAD and Model making etc. The student is expected to understand the organizational structure of the
office and observe its functioning. At the end of the semester, the student should produce with the permission of the
employer, documents/drawings/photographs to establish the nature of works undertaken during this period.
Only works endorsed by the architect and with the seal of the firm where training was done will be permitted to be
presented for evaluation. No student will be permitted to present the Seminar before submitting the Office Training
report (hard and soft copy) as per the prescribed guidelines/format given in the Internship manual. Evaluation shall
be through a seminar presentation using hard copy of the works undertaken in the office.

ARU 5002 - CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF BUILDINGS


(Pre-requisite: AR 4008 Architectural Design and Field Tour - VIII)

Course Objectives:

To systematically study a built Architectural project and to observe, record, and analyse the
performance.
To develop a critical eye for evaluating architecture in terms of the intentions envisaged and
results achieved.

The student should select any interesting completed project preferably designed by the office where the student is
being trained in order to make a critical appraisal of the same. The work involves tracing down the development
from the early design concepts procedures adopted in decision making at an inception level, series of changes in
process of approvals, constraints such as financial, labor and building bylaws changes during execution, changes
in plan /materials made by client after occupation reasons thereof maintenance aspects and user satisfaction. The
building should be assessed with respect to the building type, compliance to building regulations, indoor and
outdoor spatial quality, functional, visual, structural, material, maintenance, eco friendly, environmental, circulation,
and service aspects to assess the performance and efficiency of the building. The client reaction on different aspects
and the students personal remarks based on a balanced critical appraisal may be presented in the form of a series of
sketches and photographs, supported by brief analysis, observations etc.
The course shall be undertaken strictly as per the rules/guidelines listed in the Internship manual prepared by the
Department.
Evaluation shall be through a seminar presentation using power point. No student will be permitted to present the
Seminar before submitting the Critical appraisal report (hard and soft copy) as per the prescribed guidelines/format
given in the Internship manual.

ARU 5003 - CONSTRUCTION SITE STUDY


(Pre-requisite: AR 4008 Architectural Design and Field Tour - VIII)

Course Objectives:

To develop an understanding of construction practices on actual construction sites.


To observe the sequence of various activities on site.
To be exposed to construction management aspects of projects undertaken
To be exposed to various kind of construction equipment and their working
To enable a one to one interaction with skilled laborers and observe their working
To observe construction of specialized detailing work

Students are expected to gather from observation on site, activities involved in different stages of
construction of a building project. They are required to record the methods used, sequence of activities, construction
details, time involved at different stages etc., as observed from the site. The following items may be taken as a
checklist against which the student may make observation.

The student is expected to familiarize oneself with the sequential steps in construction- activity, construction details,
and the time period for each activity and present the same graphically through a series of sketches, drawings ,
graphs, and photographs.

Department.
Evaluation shall be through a seminar presentation using power point. No student will be permitted to present the
Seminar before submitting the Construction Site Study report (hard and soft copy) as per the prescribed
guidelines/format given in the Internship manual.

ARU 5004 - DOCUMENTATION OF INNOVATIVE DETAILS


(Pre-requisite: AR 4008 Architectural Design and Field Tour - VIII)

Course Objectives:

To develop skill for observation of innovative details


To develop an understanding of the purpose for detailing
To critically evaluate the performance of the details for the purpose intended
To develop documentation skills in different media

The student is expected to document at least twenty details which the student may come across during internship
training from office records, construction site visits or general personal observations. These may include historical
or contemporary details of any kind used in buildings, interiors, landscaping, services etc. Care should be taken to
document innovative details and observations and to evaluate them for purpose intended and performance achieved.

The same may be presented graphically through measured drawings and series of sketches of plan, section, elevation
and view, or through photographs.
The course shall be undertaken strictly as per the rules/guidelines listed in the Internship manual prepared by the
Department.
Evaluation shall be through a seminar presentation using power point. No student will be permitted to present the
Seminar before submitting the Documentation of Innovative Details report (hard and soft copy) as per the prescribed
guidelines/format given in the Internship manual.
