Brochure
Description:

A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Date:
12/6/14

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05
Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Lightroom
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate at least four quality images, in addtition to the
logo.
Learn and apply text-wrapping in InDesign.

Process:

I first began by making sketches on paper of what I wanted my

design to be. Once creating my overall design, I began finding
pictures and different elements to use in the brochure. All of
the dance pictures used in the brochure I took using a Canon
Rebel T3. I also began writing the body copy of the brochure,
writing up the history of the company as well as a description
of the classes offered. With this done, I began working in
Adobe InDesign, creating a layout and placing my elements.
The background images I found online, and I used the two
images for contrast and subtle change. The logo was created in
Adobe Illustrator, and I imported it into my brochure, placing it
on the back.

Our Story

Classes
Ballet

Stylized by specic steps, vocabulary, and positions,

classical ballet was the rst dance taught and
performed by the New World Dance Company.

Contemporary

Combining ballet and modern

dance, contemporary dance
allows the dancer to express
themselves, create natural
movements, and encourages
personal interpretation.

Tap

Performed in musicals, tap dancing is characterized

by the iconic tap shoes and their striking noise on the
stage. Dancers learn the importance of improvisations
and related technique.

The New World Dance Companys history dates back

to the early 1900s in Northern Russia. After leaving the
Russian Royal Ballet Company in 1910, Sasha Dubrov
created the New World Dance Company in order to
allow dancers to travel to the far corners of the world
and bring the joy of dance to all. For twenty years
Dubrovs company traveled to new lands across the
globe, the crowning achievement being several months
of touring in Manaus, Brazil, and Lima, Peru. Dubrov
retired from touring in 1935, and created several
permanent schools in Paris, London, and later New
York City. Together with her husband Edward Dubrov,
Sasha worked to create a legacy of dance known the
world over. Today the New World Dance Company
continues to inspire and educate people all over the
globe. Dubrovs schools of dance have been critically
acclaimed as the birthplace of modern dance as we
know it today.

Classes
Jazz

Enhances exibility,
movement, and tness levels.
Constantly changing, jazz
incorporates popular culture
and music.

Lyrical

Movements found in ballet

and contemporary dance
are combined in our lyrical
classes. A form of Jazz dance,
lyrical is a slower, more
expressive dance, danced to
ballad music.

Letterhead

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.
Keep design and typography simple.

Process:

I began by creating the diamond shapes in Adobe Illustrator.

Using different colors and layouts, I finally designed something
that communicated my message. With the elements designed,
I placed them in Adobe InDesign, changing the sizes to fit
stationary letterheads and business cards. When deciding on
my color scheme, I wanted something simple, but that was
also bright and eye catching. After placing and sizing all of my
elements to my liking, I began adding text for the logo as well
as contact information for the company.

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:

I used the rectangle tool to create the front and back outline
of my business card. I then copied/pasted the logo and contact
information onto this page. I downsized my logo and elements
to fit the overall size of the business card. I chose a black
background to keep the flow established in the letterhead.

Program(s)/Tools:
Canon Reble T3
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Apply basic photography skills.

Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Size and crop the image.
Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels.
Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image.
Desaturate the selected portion of the image.
Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process:

This project was really good for me because I have never edited
in Photoshop before. I use Lightroom for most of my work,
so learning general basics of Photoshop was really nice. I
also learned spot metering with my camera, something I have
wanted to learn for a while now.

10

Almost all of my pictures use natural light, or use minimal

editing. My favorite pictures to take were probably the
pumpkins because of the overall texture. There is something
fun to me with the different colors and how sharp they both
came out. Most of my favorite pictures to take are using depth
of field and background/foreground blur.

Objectives:

Learn basic formatting skills.

Apply graphic design princples.
Size and crop the images.
Improve textwrapping ability.

Process:

I began by listing what different elements would be required

for a successful newsletter. After creating my list I began
researching different designs and templates. When I found a
design I liked, I started to put my own twists on the design to
make it personalized and unique. The images used were found
on google images as well as lds.org media library.

Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.

Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and
how it appeals to a target audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic
understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process:

14

This web design was created using TextWrangler. Before this

project I have never used html or css. With more knowledge
and understanding of the tools, I feel I could learn to enjoy
designing on the web. I began by working with the text in
the html document, then moved onto customizing with a css
file. It was difficult, but I learned through a lot of trial and
error. Using the colors from my logo design, I incorporated a
color scheme into the overall design. These colors were found
by using photoshop and then placing the hex colors into my
css document. After working out the colors I determined my
background color and my background image. When that was
done I add padding to move the logo around and create more
appealing white space.

Adobe Illustrator, Wacom Bamboo Fun Tablet

Objectives:

Create a variety of logos to fit message of company or personal

use.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:

This project was really fun for me to learn about Adobe

Illustrator. I first began researching different logo ideas and
sketching out what I wanted. When I decided on three ideas, I
began designing in Illustrator. For each logo I used a Bamboo
Fun stylus tablet, which allowed much more creativity and
freedom. The first logo I used lines and arches to create the
camera look. Next, using the pen tool I created the shutter
design for the lens. I also used the pen tool to create my
signature as well. For the second logo, I just created the
shutter look for the a in my signature, deciding to work with
simplicity in this design. Lastly, with the last design, I also
used the pen tool and with varying stroke widths, I created the
camera look and then with my signature, created the remainder
of the logo.

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign
document to keep links intact.

Process:

I first began by making several sketches of possible layouts. In

this process, I laid out my text, title, pictures, color notes, and
logo. When I found a design I liked, I began creating in Adobe
InDesign, using black triangles to frame the image and lead the
eyes to the text. I also used gradation from white to black to
create more contrast in the image, along with opacity on several
of the shapes so they would not be too over powering.

Montage
Description:

An insperational montage made by the blending of two or more

images, and the use of typography.

Date:

10/23/14

Course/Instructor:

Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers.

Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Learn how to use editing filters.
Apply understanding of typography rules.

Process:

I first began by deciding on my overall message, and then

finding pictures and a quote to go with it. With the pictures
selected, I cropped my background image in Photoshop down
to 8.511. Taking the lasso tool, I selected the girl, flipped her
horizontally, and placed her on my background. Using a mask,
I took the black paint brush tool with a 100% opacity, softedged, and painted away the hard image edges. Next I took the
brush and painted over the picture with 30% opacity and 30%
flow, blending the image into the background, so it looks like
she is fading from the picture. After, I took the quote and typed
it in a different layer and positioned it according to the rule of
thirds.

Objectives:

Find, scan and import a high-quality image.

Create a full-bleed design
Use text boxes for layout in Word.
Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:

I began by scanning the above image into Microsoft Word and

extending it to fill a large portion of the ad. When choosing
my color scheme, I wanted something that would flow well
with the image and not be too bright and contrasting. Using the
rectangle shape tool, I created three boxes and filled them with
colors pulled from the photograph itself. Next, I separated the
information so they would each fit into the different spaces of
the ad, and would created a good flow throughout.
