Objectives

Learn to work with Photoshop layers, blend images smoothly, and use masks and
filters. Apply appropriate typography principles.

Process

I wanted to use this quote from the recent LDS conference and felt that a picture
of a pathway and the temple would be a good fit for the quote. I took several
pictures of a curving sidewalk near my house. I found the temple image and a
beautiful sky image on the internet. Using Photoshop, I adjusted the light levels,
vibrance, and the red colors of the trees in the original photo. I determined which
order to input the other images and used a mask on several layers until I had
merged the images together in a nice, blended whole. I placed elements in the
image using the rule of thirds to highlight the temple and pathway as my focal
points. In order to reinforce the message of moving from the darkness towards
the light, I included a layer with a black rectangle at the bottom. I reduced the
opacity to give the impression of coming from a darker place moving towards a
lighter place. Using a mask, I allowed the pathway to look brighter than the rest
of the foreground of the image. I added a Gaussian blur filter to the layer with the
clouds and rays of sun so that it was muted. I sharpened details in the temple so
that it would stand out against the filter on the sky. I also played with the font,
color, size, and placement of the text to add a visual element as well as a sense
of movement there. The gold font color is part of the split complementary color
scheme of brick, gold, and blue.

Objectives

Set up a two-sided document with full bleed, using quality images and text
wrapping in a brochure. Write body copy to support the design purpose and
audience. Create an original logo to go with the brochure.

Process

I created a trifold brochure for my husbands coaching business. I used the design
process to determine the message, look, and approach in conjunction with
a client interview. I created a new logo using Adobe Illustrator. I used Adobe
Photoshop to fine-tune and clip my images as necessary for the design. I used
Adobe InDesign to create the layout, using tools such as paragraph styles, textwrapping, and others that helped with text and image manipulation. I focused on
the design principles of alignment, repetition, and hierarchy. This brochure uses a
monochromatic red color scheme with grey accents. This color scheme is repeated
in the clients website.

Objectives

Create a new logo using Adobe Illustrator. Use the new logo to design consistent
layouts for letterhead and business cards. Apply typography rules and appropriate
design and settings guidelines for the project.

Process

I wanted to create a personal logo for web and graphic design. I sketched out
several ideas on paper and then recreated my drawings in Adobe Illustrator. I
played with several color schemes and finally determined a monochromatic blue
was the best. Since the logo was very simple, I wanted the business cards and
stationary to be simple as well. I used Adobe InDesign to set up the layout of the
business cards and the stationary.

Objectives

Use HTML and CSS to create web pages, designed and coded by hand. Apply
formatting and image hosting. Use design principles.

Process

I used Text Wrangle to write and edit HTML and CSS code in order to create these
web pages. I also used a complementary color scheme on each page, paying
attention to appropriate text and heading styles as well as image placement. The
second page and its associated links and documents are active on the web using
Google Drive and its hosting capabilities.

Objectives

Learn how to do high quality scanning in a full-bleed design using Microsoft Word,
a word processing program that most people have access to.

Process

I sketched some ideas out on paper and then switched my Microsoft Word view to
the publishing layout in order to take advantage of those available tools. I wanted
the image and the fundraiser message to be the most evident so I used the
principles of hierarchy and alignment to make them the most prominent. I used
a color picker to choose a color scheme from the image and designed the flyer
around the image.

Objectives

Use photos and text supplied by the client to create a pleasing marketing flyer.

Process

An client in Mesa, AZ has acquired a vacation home in Alaska that she would like
to rent out when its not in use. She asked if I would design a marketing flyer for
handing out. I interviewed her to determine what she would like and designed
accordingly. I imported the image she provided into Adobe Photoshop to boost
colors and light. Several of the images were blurry so I used several sharpening
techniques to make them usable. The client wanted to use all the images so I
created a grid design in Adobe Illustrator that would allow me to highlight all the
images, using a larger one as the focal point. While I did not create a logo for the
flyer, I used stylized text to create the idea of a logo and to give a formal feel to the
marketing piece. I used text provided by the client, but used paragraph styling to
ensure the text placement and look was good. In addition, I made sure there were
no hyphenated words, widows, or orphan text.

Objectives

Learn to work around set information that must be included such as logo, address,
and date of event. Design for 11x17 size, full bleed artwork.

Process

I was asked to design a series of three posters to advertise a hypothetical showing

of Art Deco artist A.M. Cassandres work. I designed a grid to work from so the
posters would have a connection. I drew this out on paper before going to the
computer. I also designed and drew the posters before creating them digitally in
Adobe Illustrator. I focused heavily on using the rule of thirds and alignment to
create a poster that would be visually appealing. I made use of layers, the pen tool,
and ruler guides. In one of the posters, I also created the display text in Adobe
Illustrator to highlight the artists personally designed fonts. I made sure to set
margins and full-bleed settings for printing.

Objectives

Take some pictures using various photography skills. Enhance the images in
Adobe Photoshop and add a text layer.

Process

I took quite a few pictures at a nearby park and chose one with good focal points.
Using Adobe Photoshop, I enhanced the image using light levels, vibrance, and
color selection tools. I used additional editing tools to remove a light-pole and
some garbage that changed the focal point of the photo. I sharpened the slide and
swings to add strength to them as focal points. I used an analogous color scheme
of green, lime, and yellow for my added elements because that worked well with
the image.

Objectives

Create logos using the design principles and Adobe Illustrator

Process

For each logo, I evaluated the company and their planned logo use to create
something that would be appropriate. I did some mind-mapping for ideas and
then did Online research based on my ideas. Once I had all the ideas gathered,
I drew many iterations of the logos using a pencil and paper. Inking them in
afterwards helped me envision the finished look. Once I had decided on the final
direction, I used Adobe Illustrator to create the logos digitally. For each one, I
played with several color schemed until I found what felt the best to me. I used
the pen tool for the drawing work. I used kerning and tracking where it was
appropriate and spent time testing fonts to get the best look.
