Montage
Description:

This is a flyer for a Graduate Leadership Conference. We were given the text and
the graphics to use.

Date:
10/4/14

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 11
Emily Kunz

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers.

Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

I started off by cropping the background image to 8.511. I selected the

conductor and moved him to the background image, then I added a mask.
With black paint and a 100% opacity, soft-edged brush, I painted away the hard
image edges.
With a larger black brush at 30% opacity and 30% flow, I blended the image
into the background, so it looks like he is melting into the secene. I repeated
the process with the train ticket, but I did not lasso the ticket first. I just dragged
the entire image to the background image and started masking it until it was a
gradual blend. I finally added some type with two contrasting fonts and I added
a layer style (soft, black shadow) to make the text more legible.

Logos
Description:

Three logo variations for the same company.

Date:
11-2-14

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 11
Emily Kunz

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal

image. Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:

This was an interesting project. For the first logo, I

created a square with the rounded rectangle tool. I also
pulled a clip art picture of a shoe and traced it using the
pen tool. I created the strap and buckle on the shoe and
the heel also using the rectangle and ellipse tool. I used
two different fonts on all but the middle logo. I used the
text wrap on the center logo to wrap the text around the
shoe. I created the flower on the third logo using the
ellipse tool also.

Letterhead
Description:

Matching letterhead and business card designed using a

personally created logo.

Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 11
Emily Kunz

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card and
letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:

I created the logo using the shape tool in Adobe Illustrator.

I used the Ellipse to create my flower petals and circle. For
the petals, I also used the direct selection tool to create
the petals. Once I got one petal the shape and color I liked,
I copied and pasted the rest, making sure that I had the
correct amount of flower petals. After I created the logo, I
inserted the logo into a new In Design document.
For my letterhead, I placed the logo in the top right corner.
I then placed a text box next to the logo and typed my
contact information it and positioned it on the right hand
side of the letterhead. The font was set at 10 pt. I then
added a large version of the flower with no text in the
center of it and made the opacity about 5%.

I created the logo, I inserted the logo into a new In
Design document. For my business card, I kept the logo
and contact information the same as the information on
the letterhead.I set the bleed to .125 on each page also.
The text on the this page is about 6-8pts.

Brochure
Description:

A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Date:

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe In Design
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.

Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it
appeals to a target audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process:

I used Adobe In Design, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop. The bottles

of lotion originally had a lotion logo across the front but I removed it
using the stamp tool. I used the quick selection tool on the bowl of
cream, but seem to be missing a step as I did not get the background
out of the picture when I saved it. I used the refine mask to sharpen the
edges, but because I missed this important step somewhere, I could not
get my text to wrap. I created the logo in Illustrator and designed the
oval around it to look like a bar of soap. I kept the colors all cool, calming
and soothing to go with the theme of the company. I inserted a gold bar
on the inside under the rosemary sprig to bring some more color to the
brochure and have a defining line above the text. I placed everything in
InDesign and brought the elements all together.

Flier

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign
document to keep links intact.

Process:

For my process, I used In Design Creative Cloud. I have been

fortunate enough to have some experience working with
Adobe Software at my current job, but am hoping to expand
beyond the basics. After I formulated the plan for the flyer
by drawing out sketches, I used the text and graphics that I
was given, and organized it into the current layout. I made
a few changes from my initial design after some critiques
and simplified it somewhat. The critiques were very useful
and for the most part, everyone had similar opinions. I used
repetition in the squares that I placed at the top and bottom
and kept the context as aligned as possible. I made sure that
the graphics were not out of proportion.

Event Ad
Description:

This ad is to promote a fundraiser. I used only Microsoft

Word and a scanner.

Course/Instructor:

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word
Les Olsen Scanner

Objectives:

Find, scan and import a high-quality image.

Create a full-bleed design
Use text boxes for layout in Word.
Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:

I scanned this picture from a magazine. I thought it

conveyed the message of healing and hope and faith. I
placed a color coordinated box in the lower right corner.
This helps the website to stand out a bit more. Other
than this, the text is all black. I used Microsoft Word and
PDF2JPG.net to convert my graphic from a PDF to a JPG. I
also used a professional scanner at my office, but the make
and model are not available to me at this time.

Web Page
Description:

A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.

Program(s)/Tools:
Notepad ++

Process:

I designed this page using NotePad++. I have made web pages before,
but not from the back side using code. It was interesting. I used the
pre-designed CSS file and connected it to my HTML file. After editing
my logo in Adobe Illustrator, I figured out the colors by using the eye
dropper tool. I used the HTML validator to check my codes. I think that
this part was difficult to figure out what codes they wanted changed and
why.

Imaging
Description:

A personally taken photograph that has been

edited/formatted using Photoshop.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 11

Program(s)/Tools:
Olympus SP-600UZ
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills.

Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Size and crop the image.
Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels.
Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image.
Desaturate the selected portion of the image.
Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process:

This was a fun activity, but my camera gave me a little grief

and so did the mosquitoes! For this shot, I metered the
center focus on the sky and then re-framed my shot. I slightly
brightened the colors in Photoshop but not much. We have
gorgeous sunsets here.
