Penny War Fundraising Application

Each year the Campus Life Team sponsors one major community fundraiser where students are
challenged to bring in cash donations. The division with the most money receives Spirit Points.
Clubs may apply to sponsor the Penny War competition. They will be in charge of organizing,
promoting, and distributing all money collected. The charity of the clubs choice will receive all
the money collected. This years fundraiser will run January 19-30
Name of organization sponsoring fundraising activity: Fandomania
Organization / cause fundraiser will support: Room to Read
Fundraising Goal:
Tell us about the organization you are raising money for?
Where is it located, who does it support, why does it exist, what is their mission
Room to Read is a nonprofit that works with communities and local governments throughout
Asia and Africa to promote literacy and gender equality in primary and secondary education.
They provide books, funds, teacher training, libraries, and schools to programs that are directed
by local staff that understand their own community. Room to Read has benefited 8 million
children in the last 10 years of education.
How will the money raised support the above organization?
List why the organization is in need and how the money that is raised will directly help them
If every child received an education, 171 million people would be lifted out of poverty. Room
to Read seeks to establish 1,800 libraries, publish 100 new children's books, build 250 schools
and support more than 10,000 girls in their Girls' Education Program. They will use donations
to accomplish these tasks, and hope to expand to two or four additional countries by the end of
this year. In addition to their education programs, they also want to develop monitoring tools to
track progress more effectively. Room to Read hopes to have brought quality education and a
new future to 10 million children in the developing world by 2015. They need funds for books,
school construction, and teachers, as well as funding for programs aimed at girls' education to
reduce HIV and promote healthy families with higher wages for women. This organization is
relevant to our club and the school as it helps children, like us, receive an education. We are
very privileged to go to a private school, so being able to give back to those who cant have
what we do is a huge step in being a thankful community. And it is a cause that shows the
incredible luck we have to be living in America, and how a little bit of money can change
someones life, from no chance of job, to being able to read and write and be successful.

Please submit this application to Mrs. Stein before December 4, 2014. ASB will review all
applications and the winner will be announced December 12, 2014.

Why should your club be chosen to sponsor this years Penny War?
Convince the committee that your club will do the best job sponsoring this event
Fandomania has a few key reasons why we would be extremely effective sponsoring the penny
war. First of all, we have a large officer group, meaning running and planning events will go
smoother having 6-7 officers setting up, cleaning, organizing, running, publicizing, and what
] not. Second, we have already begun brainstorming some activities to get pennies and make the
whole penny war week more exciting. We can still have the sabotage war like usual but some
other ideas. Carnival like games where you have to get your penny in to an extremely difficult
target (if you do you win a prize), a penny stacking contest, a penny rolling contest (into the
50ct. rolls), and even a game where you must build a tinfoil or other material boat, and the
other classes will guess how many pennies it will take to sink it (last three can even be worth
spirit week point). Maybe a penny themed bake sale (things would cost more than a penny).
Also having goals (like a kickstarter) for each class, and as they reach them they get something
(like casual dress if goal met by ___day, spirit points). Best part, students provide their coins,
and it benefits the fundraiser! Another reason Fando. would be a good choice is we do
activities all throughout the year, and have amazing participation. We know how to plan, set
up, and get moving on big activities and be successful. We know that these are high schoolers,
so incentive is key, and we can capitalize on this with engaging fun activities (that you only
need a penny to play!). Lastly, we know that we cant do this alone, we are only one club, so
we wont be afraid to ask for guidance or advice from CLT/ASB leading up to this. We want to
raise as much money as we can, and we know its better to ask, than to assume we know best.
How will you publicize your fundraiser?
Be creative. Think beyond just posting it in the bulletin.
Publicizing! There are a few different unique ways we thought of, but first the traditional.
Bulletin, loudspeaker, social media (IG, Twitter, FB, Snapchat, etc), in the homerooms, at
lunch, flyer and poster in high traffic areas. However some other ways we can create
awareness: video (we have RJ and Alex in the club and they love to make videos), have it so
students can view how much each class has raised, and see how much they need, maybe do
chalk art in the quad, copper color the campus with decorations, ask Team Captains/CLT/Club
Presidents/ASB/CMEB to support and promote it with us, and make it look enjoyable and
competitive. We will make sure we catch the students attention to the cause and the fundraiser.
