Life Cycles Butterfly
Thinking skills and personal capabilities focus

The children have had two lessons relating to the life cycle of a butterfly.
They have listened to books, researched some facts, and looked at the
various stages.

Managing Information Students will have to select the most


appropriate information about each stage to include in their graphic
organizer since theyre only writing one sentence. They will also use a
range of methods for representing information since they are using
words and pictures.
Self-Management Students will have to manage their time to complete
the task in the time allocated.

By Support Students will have explicit teaching and modeling before


being asked to work independently. The teacher will ensure to touch
base more frequently with those students who are struggling.
By Task Students are completing illustrations, which gives students the
opportunity to convey their knowledge in a way other than words.

Learning intentions
Students will be able to:
Accurately create a visual representation for each stage of the life cycle.
Complete the cycle graphic organizer.
Define what a life cycle is.
Introduction
Review what was done last week and define what a Life Cycle is.

Role of the teacher


Demonstrator: Teacher will be defining life cycles and completing
modeling before introducing the activity.
Facilitator: The teacher will be walking around and assisting
students as needed once they begin their activity. They will provide

support who need it and ask extension questions to those who


finish quickly.
Activity
Students will receive the graphic organizer handout.
Teacher will clearly explain directions and model the beginning.
Students will work independently to complete the graphic organizer
including a picture of each stage and a brief explanation of what
happens.
Students will do a gallery walk and have the opportunity to see
everyone elses
Plenary
Teacher will recap the four stages of the life cycle and invite a few students
to share their graphic organizers. Teacher will also allude to starting the life
cycle of a frog next.

Assessment/Monitoring
Teacher observation while circulating the room will serve as an informal observation as to who seems to understand and who is struggling. The
completion of the graphic organizer will also be a tool used for assessment. Were they able to visually represent the four components of butterfly life
cycle?
