1. State whether the following examples of steam are wet, dry or superheated: Justify your answer:
(a) Pressure at 1 MPa absolute, Enthalpy=2880 kJ/kg
(b) Pressure at 500 kPa absolute, Volume=0.35 m3
(c) Temperature=200oC, entropy=6.88 kJ/kg-K
(d) Temperature=100o C, Entropy=6.88 kJ/kg-K
(e) Pressure at 10 kPa, Enthalpy=2584 kJ/kg.
2. Steam expands isentropically from 70 bar and 500o C to 20 kPa in a steam turbine. Calculate the
dryness fraction and the enthalpy of the steam after expansion if the steam flows steadily through
the turbine with a mass flow rate 150 kg/min. Determine the turbine work. Draw T-S diagram and
show the above process on it.
3. A rigid vessel of volume 0.86 m3 contains 1 kg of steam at a pressure of 2bar. Evaluate the specific
volume, temperature, dryness fraction, internal energy, enthalpy and entropy of steam. The above
vessel is heated to raise its temperature to 150o C. Show the process on the p-v diagram and evaluate
final pressure, change in enthalpy, change in entropy and the heat transfer for the process. Also
evaluate the pressure at which the steam becomes dry saturated.
4. 10 kg of water at 2 bar and 45o C is heated at constant pressure until its temperature reaches 300o C.
Determine the changes in volume, enthalpy, internal energy and entropy. Also determine the heat
transfer for the process.
5. Steam flows through a turbine at a rate of 5000 kg/hr, entering at 15 bar and 300o C with a velocity
of 80m/s and at an elevation of 2 m above the exit sectiion. The steam leaves at 0.1 bar and 4%
moisture with a velocity of 40m/s. Assuming the flow process to be adiabatic. Determine the power
output from the turbine.
6. Steam expands isentroprically in a nozzle from 1 MPa and 250o C to 10 kPa. The mass flow rate is
1 kg/s. Neglecting the velocity of steam at inlet to the nozzle determine the exit velocity and exit
diameter. What would be the exit velocity and exit diameter if the velocity at the inlet is 60 m/s.
7. Steam at 10 bar and 200o C undergoes a polytropic process to 1 bar according to the law pv 1.15 = C.
Determine
(a) the final condition of steam
(b) work transfer for the process
(c) magnitude and direction of heat transfer and
(d) change in entropy
8. The following observations were made in an experiment with a combined-seperating-throttling calorimeter. Pressure in the steam mains=15 bar, mass of water drained from the separator=0.55 kg, mass of
steam condensed in the throttling calorimeter=4.2 kg, pressure of steam after throttling=10 mm of
mercury(vacuum); Temperature of the steam after throttling=120o C. Evaluate the dryness fraction
of the steam sample from the mains. State with reason whether the throttling calorimeter alone
could have been used for this test. Barometer reading=760 mm of mercury.
9. A pressure cooker contains 1.5 kg of saturated steam at 5 bar, find the quality of heat which must
be rejected so as to reduce the quality to 60% dry. Determine the temperature and pressure at new
state.

10. In a steam engine, expansion of the steam takes place from 7 bar, 0.98dry to 0.84 bar by the
following the law P V 1 .13. Calculate per kg of steam Work done and Dryness fraction of the steam
after expansion.
11. Temperature of feed water entering a boiler is 50o C and pressure of the steam in the boiler is 30 bar.
How much heat is required to produce 1 kg of steam if the steam produced is, (a) 0.97 dry (b) Dry
saturated (c) Superheated with 40o C superheat.
12. If a certain amount of steam is produced at a pressure of 8 bar and dryness fraction of 0.8. Calculate
(a) External work done during evaporation (b) External latent heat of steam
13. Two boilers one with superheater and the other without the superheater are delivering equal qualities
of steam into a common main. The pressure in the boiler and the main is 20 bar. The temperature
of the steam from boiler with superheater is 350o C and that from the other boiler is 250o C. Find
the quality of the steam supplied by the other boiler. Cp for superheated steam=2.25 kJ/kg-K.
14. Find the saturated temperature, the changes in specific volume and entropy during evaporation and
the latent heat of vapourization of steam at 1 MPa.
15. The following data were obtained with a seperating and throttling calorimeter: Pressure in the
pipeline is 1.5 MPa, During 5 min moisture collected in the separator is 0.15 litre at 70o C, Steam
condensed after throttling during 5 min is 3.24 kg. Find the quality of steam in pipeline.
16. A steam boiler initially contains 5m3 of water at 1 MPa. Steam is taken out at a constant pressure
until 4m3 of water is left. What is the heat transferred during the process.
17. Steam initially at 0.3 Mpa, 250o C is cooled at constant volume.
(a) At what temperature will the steam become saturated vapor
(b) What is the quality at 80o C
(c) What is the heat transferred per kg of steam in cooling from 250o C to 80o C
18. A vessel of volume 0.04m3 contains a mixture of saturated water and saturated steam at a temperature of 250o C. The mass of the liquid present is 9 kg. Find the pressure, mass, specific volume,
enthalpy, entropy and internal energy.
19. Steam initially at 0.3MPa, 250o C is cooled at constant volume. Find
(a) At what temperature will the steam become saturated vapour.
(b) What is the quality at 80o C? What is the heat transferred per kg of steam in cooling from
250o C to 80o C?
20. Steam flows in a pipeline at 1.5 Mpa. After expanding to 0.1 MPa in a throttling calorimeter, the
temperature is found to be 120o C. Find the quality of steam in the pipe line. What is the maximum
moisture at 1.5 MPa that can be determined with this set-up if least 5o C of superheat is required
after throttling for accurate readings?
