Africa is the second largest continent in the world, has an estimate

population of 1.1billon, it covers 15% of the total population of the world.


This continent is known for having one of most ancient civilization, the
Egyptian, and has been a great history maker for presenting an amazing
quantity of fossils that seems to be the first continent where humans were
found.

The African continent has
approximately 3,000 distinct ethnic groups while Nigeria alone has about
370 of these tribes that have been officially recognized. Africa has the
longest river in the world which is the Nile; it goes through different
countries such as Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda and Egypt. Also possesses the
largest waterfall, the Victoria located in Zimbabwe and Zambia border.
The largest desert in the world the Sahara desert is also situated in Africa
and it spans across at least a dozen countries.
In this article will get to know about some of the some important cultural
aspects about the marvelous island of Madagascar.

The republic of Madagascar is located in the east coast of Africa; it is the


worlds four largest island. It combines the exotic beauty of tropical
beaches with and the wildlife of the jungle. It is known all over the world
their famous and unique lemur and their dreamed colorful coral barriers.
About their history, the Malagasy people are of mixed MalayoIndonesian and African-Arab ancestry. About its political organization
before the French colonization, four kingdoms existed called: Merina,
Betsileo, Betsimisaraka, and Sakalava.
The most powerful kingdom was the Merina; they impose their
domination among others, because they were the biggest. In 1896
France declared Madagascar a colony, and where under their control
until to independence on 20 June 1960.
In Madagascar geography you can find very dry forest, tropical
beaches and a little jungle. There arent lost of high peaks in the island, it
is a very flat territory. The climate is divided in rainy season from
November to April and dry season from May to October.
The Malagasy culture is influence by the Southeast Asia and East Africa;
you can also relate the French and Arab culture. The official language is
Malagasy and French. The most symbolic instrument is the valiha, it is like
a flute made of bamboo, and it is used to play the folkloric music with
other percussion instruments. The traditional clothes are called lamba, in
the past they were made from silk, nowadays they are made from
cotton. It consists in the big rectangular piece of fabric that they wrap
around their body. You can see lambas from different colors; they can
go from any solid color, to stripped patterns. The weaving of the lamba
is an activity made by womens, but both men and women used them.
They are use in ceremonial activities.
Malagasy cuisine is have ingredients like rice, yam, potatoes, beef, pork,
fish which are used very common, for seasoning garlic, onions, ginger,
tomatoes, mild curry, salt, coconut milk and vainilla are essentials to
have. In the coast the seafood are regular dishes, seasoned with spicy
condiments.
