Postal service:

In the past, automobiles were usually

bought off the shelf, but nowadays
most vehicles are made to order.
Consequently, the production
process faces particular needs,
because each vehicle requires clear
identification, recording and storing of
all data specifically associated with
its manufacture, ranging from the
engine through the transmission type
to the painting.
Prior to production, all data needed
are distributed via the central
computer to the various production
units. For this, the data used to be
saved in the responsible computers
units, but today, all data associated
with the individual automobile are
stored on mobile data carriers. As
a result, the CPU load is reduced
and communication problems are
avoided.

The postal service is another area

where reliable identification
technology is of essential
importance. One of the automation
tasks is, for example, the parcel
sorting process. Here, bar code and
identification systems interact. Each
parcel carries a bar code, which also
contains the country of destination
alongside other information. In the
sorting and distribution centre, these
data are read automatically and the
parcels are sorted and placed into
containers, which run on conveyer
belts. The containers are equipped
with mobile read/write data carriers.

These mobile data carriers

accompany the vehicles throughout
the product process. During
production all quality-associated data
(e.g. who mounted the wheels when
and how?) are recorded and stored
on the tag, so that continuous
quality control is ensured.

Automated storage
Today, advanced storage technology
has to meet the requirements of the
complex and chaotic storage
environment: in order to shorten the
travel distance of the robot, the
storage bins are not assigned to a
fixed storage position but are placed
there, where space is available.
A pre-requisite for implementing this
approach is an automatic identification system: error-free and
reliable commissioning through
robots is realised through the use of
read/write heads and data carriers
mounted directly on the transport
and storage container. System
malfunctions and downtimes,
caused by mechanical damage or
dirty bar-code labels, thus belong to
the past.
Identification systems based on RFID
technology guarantee more efficient
and safe storage management, thus
avoiding down-times, reducing
throughput times and improving
system reliability. Consequently, the
value of the RFID system is quickly
amortised.
When using a read/write system
compared to a read-only system,
the data carrier of the storage
container can be re-written, thus
ensuring constant availability of upto-date data.

The specific data of each parcel are

directly stored.
Read-write heads are mounted in
parallel to the conveyor belt and
read the individual parcel data. Next
to the conveyor belt there are large
wheeled containers which are
assigned to the various countries of
destination. The parcels are
automatically placed in the right
container and are then ready for
further transport. Correct
assignment and continuous control
of the parcels actual location are
thus ensured.
Of course, there are many more
useful applications for identification
systems, for example, trolley filling
control in foundries or correct sorting
of washing in large-scale automated
laundry systems.

BASICS OF IDENTIFICATION SYSTEMS

FUNCTIONS AND COMPONENTS

SYSTEM COMPONENTS

Today, transparency, flexibility and

customer specific product versions
go hand in hand with modern
production processes. Many
production processes therefore
require on-going recording and
control of production-related data,
comprising information on the
assembly components and the
assembly process.

Mobile data carriers

Formerly, so-called batch cards

accompanied the product and were
read by the assembler. To avoid
quality defects and waste caused by
reading errors or the like,
batch cards were replaced by
identifier codes called
bar code systems.
However, this
technology was also
error-prone because
contamination or
damaging of the
information carrier regularly
caused problems.
Identification systems
incorporate state-of-the-art
technology providing fully
automatic read-write functionality
while achieving 100% data integrity.
These systems resist temperature
fluctuations and deposit build-up,
such as dust, water and oils, are
recyclable and long-lived.
The system features non-contact
and thus wear-free data transfer
between the data carrier (tag) and
read-write head. Exact positioning is
not necessary.
TURCK Identification systems
TURCK Identification systems always
consist of a
a mobile data carrier (tag)
a read/write head and
a processor unit
(interface module)

The data carrier can also be read
on the fly (dynamic reading and
writing) and written to.

All these featues

make these systems optimally suited
to solve a wide spectrum of
applications, ranging from package
assembly in a mail-order company
through automated production
processes, e.g. the automotive
industry, to outdoor applications.
The memory capacity of the data
carrier amounts to up to 32 kByte.
A battery is not needed (FRAM
technology, exception: infrared
systems). The achievable distances
between the read/write head and
the data carrier range from a few
mm up to 60 mm (infrared version
up to 2,000 mm).
There are data carriers with
operating frequencies of 125 kHz,
1.5 MHz and 13.56 MHz available.

The devices come in diverse

mechanical dimensions, ranging
from 12 mm diameter types to
rectangular data carriers sized
75 x 50 x 15 mm. The high degree
of protection (up to IP68) is common
to all devices.
The interface modules are the
interface between the identification
system and the higher level control
system. Depending on the type
of interface module, 1 or 2
read/write heads may be
connected. There are
interface modules with
serial or parallel interface
but also with fieldbus
interface, e.g. for INTERBUS, PROFIBUS-DP,
DeviceNet, ControlNet und
Ethernet.
Due to the large variety of housing
types, interfaces and operating
frequencies, TURCK identification
systems can be optimally adapted to
specific application needs. TURCKs
large selection of field accessories
(e.g. fieldbus components,
connectors) make it an easy
decision to opt for a comprehesive
solution from a single source.

Mobile data carriers (tag)

The mobile data carrier is used to
store data.
Memory chip (memory)
One distinguishes between two
types of tags: one type of read
only tag allows reading data in
form of a defined code (Read only
tag = RO tag), while the other
enables both reading of information
and adding new data (Read-Write
tag = RW tag). There are memory
chips with a capacity of up to
32 kByte available.
Electrical fields do not have an effect
because special protocols are used
for the read/write process.
Selection of the right
kind of tag
Tags should be selected according
to the following criteria:
Mechanical dimensions
Memory capacity
Read or write distance
Required data transmission speed

Read/write heads
The read-write head powers the tag
and transfers data.
The antenna creates an electromagnetic field, that is detectable by
the tag within the transmission zone.
Data and energy transfer is only
possible, when the tag is within this
field.
Selection of the right kind of
read-write head
The read-write head should be
selected according to the following
criteria:
Mechanical dimensions
Size of transmission zone
Interaction with other read-write
heads
Type of tag used

The interface module

The interface module ensures
communication between the
process control system and the tag
via the read-write head. It generally
incorporates two interfaces: an
interface to the read/write head,
which is established via a 4-wire
cable, as well as an interface for
connection to the higher-level control
system as a serial or parallel
interface, alongside versions for
fieldbus systems such as PROFIBUS-DP and INTERBUS.
Selection of the kind of interface
module
The interface module should be
selected according to the following
criteria:
What type of interface does the
higher-level control system use?
What kind of software is needed?
How many read/write heads
are to be connected?
Are additional I/Os necessary?
