Jerome Lavelle, co-author Engineering Economic Analysis, 11E, won the 2011 Wellington Award,
which is given at the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) Annual Conference & Expo and
recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of engineering economy. His co-authors, Donald
Newnan and Ted Eschenbach, have both taken home the prize in the past.
This eleventh edition of the market-leading Engineering Economic Analysis offers comprehensive
coverage of financial and economic decision-making for engineers, with an emphasis on problem
solving, life-cycle costs, and the time value of money. The authors' concise, accessible writing,
practical emphasis, and contemporary examples linked to students' everyday lives make this text
the most popular among students. And with the most extensive support package, this is the easiest

* Excel support: 36 video-based Microsoft Excel software tutorials, each explaining how to use Excel
to work specific financial calculations, and a collection of interactive spreadsheet models. Each is
designed to promote independent, self-paced instruction in this vital tool. Makes a wonderful
companion to both the text and the Casebook.
This is an outstanding clearly written introduction to engineering economic analysis. The text
contains many clear examples illustrating how to use the techniques and principles of economic
analysis. The one area the book is a little weak is dealing with economics in the public sector (i.e.
municipal projects for cities or counties). Overall this is an excellent book for learning the principles
and applying them to realistic situations. I use this book as a reference in the professional practice
of engineering.
This book was required for my economics class and from the start I've been frustrated with it. I've
given it three stars because personally I feel that the questions at the end of the chapters are
worded in such a way that it sounds confusing. Not all questions are bad but I felt Chapter 1 was the
worst. The book is not all that bad. The examples are useful if you get stuck on some of the
problems. Do go through the book and answer the questions. If you are planning on taking the FE
this book will help to prepare you. Go through chapters 3 - 7 and that will cover 90 percent of the
questions that will be on the exam. The back of the book does contain FE practice problems but I
didn't go through them.
Highly regarded by professors and students alike , Engineering Economic Analysis, Eighth Edition,
introduces the fundamental concepts of engineering economics. Written for standard engineering
economics courses, this bestselling volume by Donald G. Newnan, Jerome P. Lavelle, and Ted G.
Eschenbach covers essential time value of money principles for engineering projects and isolates

the problems and decisions engineers commonly face. It also examines the tools necessary to
properly analyze and solve those problems. Revised in 2000, the eighth edition focuses on the use
of spreadsheets, teaching students to use the enormous capabilities of modern software, rather than
relying on spreadsheet templates. The majority of the chapters conclude with sections designed to
help students create spreadsheets based on the material covered in each chapter. The book's
organization gives professors the flexibility to omit spreadsheet instruction without loss of continuity
(accommodating shorter courses) or to require that all computations be done with spreadsheets,
thus preparing students to use this essential tool for real-life problems.

Now in a ninth edition, Engineering Economic Analysis offers comprehensive coverage of financial
and economic decision-making for engineering projects, with an emphasis on problem solving, life
cycle costs, and the time value of money. The spreadsheet material from the previous edition
hasbeen expanded, allowing students to create and analyze more realistic cash-flow models. The
authors' concise, accessible writing style and practical emphasis make this text ideal for
undergraduate engineering economy courses. Features of the Ninth Edition BLNew pedagogical
features include: --Chapter-opening vignettes --Chapter objectives BLThe interior design will
improve readability, generate student interest, and facilitate comprehension of the material. BLA
new chapter has been added: Chapter 18, Accounting and Engineering Economy. BLChapter 10,
Probability and Uncertainty, has been completely rewritten to emphasize how to make good choices
by considering the uncertainty that is part of every engineering economy application. BLChapter 13,
Replacement Analysis, has been rewritten to clarify the comparison of existing assets with newer
alternatives. BLAppendix 7A, Difficulties Solving for an Interest Rate, has been thoroughly revised to
use the power of spreadsheets to solve problems. BLEnd-of-chapter problems are reorganized and
updated
throughout.

Complicated wording at times, but overall the book is very informative. Sample problems and end of
chapter problems are worded strangely; interpreting the question is the entire battle. Bought for an
economic class as the required text, but would probably recommend it to someone who needs a
basic understanding of economics as it relates to engineering. This text is used for an
undergraduate course designed to prepare for the FE exam, so it would prove useful for someone
needing to review for licensing. Very little was updated for the later edition, so just buy this one and
save your money.
This title was required for an Engineering Economics class, although it was the 10th (newest) edition
rather than the 9th edition (the edition that I purchased) that was required. Because the new edition
is so expensive everywhere you look and only slightly different from the previous edition, which is
much cheaper, I decided to buy the 9th edition. It does the job; the text is more or less the same as
in the 10th edition, but the end-of-chapter problems are moved around. To me, it is worth the lower
price to have the older edition.
