AUBURNS MAN CAVE WELCOMES ALL

The perfect
place to
Christmas shop
for HIM!

By Paul Cambra | Of the Auburn Journal

Dont let the name fool

you. Women are welcome,
if not courted, at this man
cave.
If it wasnt for our women
shoppers, wed be out of
business by now, said
Tony Yorba, co-owner
of the Man Cave in
downtown Auburn. They
are our best customers.
And, he said, they are
not necessarily buying for
their men.
A lot of women are into
sports and pop culture
and we have a lot of those
types of items, Yorba
said.
The Man Cave opened

a little more than a

year ago. Originally the
brainchild of five guys
that wanted something
to do together, the
shop is now owned and
run by just Yorba and
Farrell Ross. In addition
to the sports and pop
culture items that line the
shelves, youll find neon
signs, guitars, vintage
rock posters and photos,
automotive odds and
ends, and two of Rosss
personal favorites, casinothemed goodies and
Hawaiian shirts.
In a nutshell, its a walk
down memory lane,
Ross said. Its nostalgia.
Its like a museum for

remember as a child, or
something that reminds

One thing theyll find is

Or your mother, if what

they say about their
customer profile holds
true. Whatever the case,
the one thing they both
point out is that theres a
little bit of something for
everyone.

Its about having fun,

Ross said. I like to see
people get a good value. interesting and new.

Its a place thats fun to

come to, fun to shop at,
whether it be a gift for
someone or just killing
a little time, Yorba
said. There is a certain
expectation when people
come in, but it actually
works best for those who
stick their heads in and say
What is this place? We
just came in to see what it
was.

The store is stocked with

low-cost gift ideas, plenty
in the $10-and-under
range and almost all, they
hope, score high on the
interesting scale.
Rare is nice, unusual
is nice, but its all about
being interesting, Yorba
said. Each time they
come back, we want
them to see something
they havent experienced
before. Its a lot of work to
keep that expectation in
mind, but we work really
hard to keep it fresh and

merchandise is preowned, but they do carry
a good selection of new
items. While their buying
is based on demand, they
try not to offer things that
you can find online or in
another store.
Theyre the foothills
version of the American

a browsers paradise. In
fact, Ross is having T-shirts
made that read You just
might find something you
cant live without.

vintage or thrift shop.

Beatles transcend generations and may have surpassed Elvis.

Auburn is a veritable candy store of vintage boutiques and eclectic

niche businesses where some of the most charming gifts can be found at a
more-than-reasonable price.

Most people that buy and listen to vinyl are either audiophiles, and fetishize the
sound of analog recordings, or they simply like the aesthetics of vinyl records,
packaging and turntables. Either way there is a romanticism and sentimentality
to the tactile quality of records.

Julia Metcalf, a vendor at Vintage Redeemed in Auburn, said the interest in

vintage clothing and houseware has soared in recent years.

People dont have to buy vinyl, and yet, theyre increasingly choosing to do
so, Lauer said.

The economic hardship weve all experienced, I think, contributes to the

She said more and more people wear vintage and are working it into their
everyday wardrobes and homes. She has also seen it make a big comeback on
the catwalk with many fashion labels on and off High Street adopting vintage
garments or a vintage look for their designs.
Its an opportunity to shop for beautiful, unusual gifts and items, because you
cant beat the charm of vintage, said Janice Anderson, a local resident and
shopper. You get one-of-a-kind gifts that are personal and have depth. Part
of the charm is that I dont know what I am going to find and Im going to buy
whatever jumps out and says, Take me home.
Subhed: Give it a spin
Al Lauer, owner of Cherry Records in Auburn, said there has been a resurgence
of records as the younger generation wants vinyl more and more.
The most popular records to go out of here are the Beatles, Lauer said. The

James Van Eaton, local author and co-owner of Winston Smiths Bookstore in
Downtown Auburn, lives in a world of books.
There is a slight increase in sales over the holidays, Van Eaton said.
However, we dont hedge our bets on it; it is just a nice bonus.
He said Auburn readers looking to save some cash and searching for cheap
entertainment can find it at local used bookstores.
In my experience economic downturns have led to increased book sales, Van
Eaton said. Now we mainly see people buying special edition or beautifully
bound books.
Living in a society of mass production, there is no better way to capture the
spirit of Auburn than to give a gift that as unique as the person receiving it.

uzzy Fuzzy stuffed toys, puzzles, arts and crafts, childrens books and toys
that teach always make for good Christmas gifts, and people come from
as far away from Reno to shop in Debbie Duncans Auburn toy store.

And she knows what the younger boys and girls want with her selection that
caters to the 10 and under crowd.
Boys love dinosaurs, and girls are into princess toys, Duncan said.
She runs Bargain Baby Childrens & Maternity which is also a toy and childrens
bookstore is at 948 Lincoln Way.
She carries mostly activity toys she considers quality from Melissa & Doug,
which specializes in childrens toys.
These are toys that teach, she said. Theyre not empty calories, and theyre
quality toys.
She pointed to a strongly-built wooden Doorbell House that comes with four
different locks and matching keys that the kids have to figure out which goes
in what lock. It also comes with four different electronic doorbell sounds and
poseable play figures. A check at the Melissa & Doug website shows theyre
out of stock on the item.
Another teaching toy is the wooden Lacing Shoe that teaches children how to
reach the milestone of lacing and tying shoes themselves.
In addition to the teaching toys, Duncan has a stock of popular puzzles, jewelry
making kits, and arts and crafts supplies for kids and many more toys.

CHRISTMAS 1969
The Christmas memory that lives on

By Dennis Noone | Of the Auburn Journal

ince I was a kid, the phrase best

Christmas memory always comes
down to one year: 1969.

the first few weeks while starting in new

schools right after Christmas vacation.
My poor mom. The logistics of such a
move required her to demonstrate the
choreographic skills of a Nijinsky, the
leadership of a drill sergeant, and the
attention to detail of a Radar OReilly.

That was the year my parents told my

three siblings and me that my dad had
been promoted and that we were
moving from snowy upstate New York to
sunny California.
For the last couple of months of that year,
my dad was already on the new job in
California while we stayed behind to sell
our house, get ready to move and wait
for our new house to be built. For those
couple of months, my mom was in effect
a single mother of four young kids and a
dog.
Upping the stakes: We were moving the
day after Christmas!

Christmas (nuff said);

Moving across the country, which
entailed:
My first plane flight;
Going to a new school;
Making new friends.

Oh, and our new house wouldnt be ready

yet, so wed be staying in a hotel for

W
NO

For the 11-year-old me, this was an

exciting, almost dizzying confluence of
events:

Our Christmas tree that year would have

packed, we decorated our little tree with

homemade garlands of popcorn and fresh
cranberries.
As for our Christmas gifts, since there
was no room under the tree or in our
suitcases for the usual number of presents
for a family of six, we each got one special
present and wed get to bring it on the
plane with us.
This was getting better by the minute:
Flying for the first time, with a special
Christmas present to play with on the sixhour flight, to the other side of the country,
where wed become Californians and make
new friends and live happily ever after.
Flying across country in 1969 was a very
different experience from todays air
travel. For one thing, everyone dressed
up. People didnt fly in sweats and shorts
and shower shoes. In my case, it meant a
navy blazer, white shirt and tie, gray slacks

and an overcoat (this was, after all, upstate

New York in December).

Flight attendants treated travelers,

differently, too. They dispensed gum,
smiles, pillows and tasty food on real china.
Oh, and my dads company sweetened the
pot by flying us all first-class on a thennew American Airlines 747, no less.
Its too late to make this long story short,
so suffice to say that we four kids each got
to bring our one special Christmas present
with us on the flight. (Wed get the rest a
few weeks later, once we moved into our
new house.)
My Christmas gift was a 500-piece Lego
set, which I enjoyed on the floor in a
corner of the 747s upstairs lounge. As I
said, flight attendants were much kinder
and more tolerant back then.
Good thing, too.

Christmas Memories
SANTA CAME THROUGH WITH CHRISTMAS WISH

y favorite Christmas memory would be

sitting by the fire at my nanas house and
meeting Santa. We would all be sitting in
one room singing Christmas songs and we would
all hear a thump thump. My nana and I looked at
each other and wondered what that was. We waited
to her another sound on the roof but it was silent.
All of the sudden, we hear a knock on the door. My
papa opens it and there, standing outside the door,
is the guy I have always wanted to meet. With his
big belly and black boots Santa walks into the house
and he yells Merry Christmas!
As everybody calms down, my nana pulls up a chair
for him to sit down on. All the kids scatter to go tell
Santa what they want for Christmas. One by one,
each child tells Santa what they want. But I had to
wait my turn. I waited and waited for my turn, and I
remember feeling like it took forever to finally sit on
Santas lap for the first time!
Moments later, Santa looks at me and says, Now
young lady, would you like to come sit on Santas
lap? Politely I said yes. He asks me, Now what

Not sure what to give

your special lady?

would you like for Christmas. I whisper in his ear,

All I want for Christmas is my family. He looked at
me puzzled. Santa said, Is there anything else you
want? Like any other kid would say, Of course!
Again, I whispered in his ear what I wanted for
Christmas and he said I think I can arrange that!
The next morning I woke up to a tree filled with
presents underneath. I run to my Nana and Papas
room and wake them up. We go out to the tree
and open one or two presents. I open them but its
not what I told Santa I had wanted. As we hear a
knock on the door, there my dad is. He walks in with
something in his hands. I look again, I was shocked.
There it was; what I have always wanted! A dog!
I run to go hold him, and smile at my dad, my nana,
and my papa and I say, Merry Christmas, I love you
guys. As we grow older, we will forget ones who
once meant so much to us, we will forget what we
use to look like in middle school and high school,
but what we will never forget is family memories,
such as this one.

SHOOTING HOOPSC
F
ON CHRISTMAS
DAY

have very many memories of past Christmases, but

one seemed to be my favorite. When I was 6 years
old, I woke up early in the morning on Christmas
day and went into the living room. There were
presents under the tree, but in the corner were two
huge boxes.
Santa Claus had brought me a basketball hoop
and a piano. They were both very exciting to get,
but I liked the basketball hoop more. I never had an
interest for basketball but I was still very excited to
get this present.
As we opened our other presents, all I could think
about was playing with the basketball hoop. Once
we set it up, I played and played, and I could tell my
parents were happy that I loved my new present.

Christmas Memories

CROWDED HOUSE MAKES

FOR HAPPY CHRISTMAS

down a week before the holidays. Under it was the

many pieces of wrapping paper used to wrap up our
presents. I got my own laptop and a snare drum with
it. It was awesome.

Christmas memory I have was a few

years ago when all of my family came for
Christmas. This doesnt usually happen
because we have people who live on the east coast.
When we had everybody over the house was really
crowed but it was nice to see all of my family who I
can see only once or twice a year.

My grandmother and great grandmother were at

my house too, talking about how my family would
move away to a new house. I ignored them and
concentrated on the smell of cooking ham wafting
through the air. It was a smell that made my mouth
water. After we had the ham and mashed potatoes
I went back to thinking about how awesome this
Christmas was and how it topped the others like a
star on a Christmas tree.

LAUGHTER AND FONDUE ON

CHRISTMAS EVE

uring the Christmas season my family has

a very special thing that we do every year.
On Christmas Eve, my family, cousins and

grandparents will gather around a large table with

one big pot of fondue. My grandma and mom will
spend the whole day cooking up different foods,
such as bread or sausage, to dip into the fondue.
We will sit there for hours talking and laughing.
After that is done we will open our presents, unlike
most families we open most of ours on Christmas
Eve. Once we are done opening our presents we
will sit down and watch a Christmas movie then fall
asleep.
Next morning we will have one big Christmas
present under the tree that usually will have the gift
we most wanted. I remember last year I awoke and
found no present that was for me under the tree
then I looked out the window only to see a brand
new basketball hoop. This is one of my favorite
Christmas memories.

on the topic of Disneyland. My grandpa was surprised
we had never gone before, and said we needed to go
some time, and to our surprise, for Christmas we got
three day park hopper passes to both Disneyland and
the California Adventure Park.
After the six-hour drive, we finally arrived at the hotel,
and I remember we were all glad to get out of the
packed minivan. I remember I was barely able to sleep
that night, so pumped for the excitement the next day
would hold, but eventually I dozed off and the next
thing I knew, it was morning.
The next morning I was so excited, I could barely eat
my breakfast, and then when I thought I couldnt take
the suspense anymore, we were about to leave for
a very exciting day. Upon arriving, the lines to get in
were packed and after about 10 minutes, I got my first
glimpse of Disneyland.
I remember all of the decorations hung up around the

Before I knew it, the three days were over, and it was
time for another five-hour ride back to San Mateo
to drop my grandparents off at their home. We
repeatedly thanked them for buying us the tickets
and I was relieved we were finally going home. After
another hour drive we arrived at our house around
eleven oclock and I remember collapsing on my bed,
tired and relieved to be home. I fell asleep almost
immediately, dreaming about the fun rides we went

My next ride was my favorite, the Tower of Terror. I

remember being apprehensive at first, not completely
sure I wanted to go on, but somehow my dad and
grandpa convinced me. Waiting in the fast track line,
I was having second thoughts, but it was too late
and they were already showing us the scary video
before the ride. Walking through the halls, I admired
the spooky decorations, and the next thing I knew, I
was strapped into the seat. The loose seat belt was
not helping my shaking body and my petrified mind,
but then we were shot up into the elevator shaft and
the sensation of floating overtook me. I remember
holding onto my dads arm the whole time, worried I
would float away, but after the ride was over, I realized
it wasnt so bad and wanted to ride again.

on, and the good times we had on our trip. That was
my most favorite and memorable Christmas.
