1. Why do you think the writers of the constitution held in high esteem freedom of speech?
The writers of the constitution held in high esteem freedom of speech so people would be assured
that they would be able to criticize the government and not to go back to the monarchy.
2. What is speech?
Speech is a symbolic expression of an idea, an important factor of the democracy that expresses
thoughts and feelings regarding some certain circumstances.
3. Why are all means of expression of great value in a democracy?
All means of expression are of great value in a democracy, because its who you are and who you
believe in, its what people think and choose. Also democracy means a government led by the
people, for the people. So its important for the people to have free and equitable means of
expression.
4. In your opinion, what is the reason for the existence of restrictions on freedom of speech?
The reason for the existence of restrictions on freedom of speech is that some information may
create danger situations or false illusions to some people, may invoke riots in the state, may
infringe some peoples rights, may offend some religions or national minorities, so its better for
them to keep restrictions in freedom of speech.
5. Why is it so difficult to tell what speech is protected and what isn't?
It is difficult to tell what speech is protected and what isn't, because sometimes it is difficult to
decide either that speech expresses a peaceful opinion or its a protest against the government.
6. What is the basic principle that is the point of departure for all judicial decisions related to free
speech?
The basic principle that is the point of departure for all judicial decisions related to free speech is
that: Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, and this is allowed for all
government, not just for congress.
7. What factors did the justices bring up as ones that could count when finding solutions to free
speech arguments?
Justice brought out many factors, such as education or self-control, but the most important one is
the age of the person who expressed his opinion, because at different ages will be set different
penalties or restrictions. For example, a 7 year boy will be not so strictly punished as a 28 year man
who perfectly knows what he said and what consequences can it cause.
8. There is no definition for free speech in the supreme law of the USA. In this context, what is the
meaning of the phrase ...thats left up to the people to work out?

The meaning of this phrase is that government left for the people the power to decide next things:
does that speech matter or not? Does that speech influence on the public opinion? Will that speech
get negative reactions? What principles have that speech? Are the principles similar to the previous
cases and will it bring new perspectives? So, the government let the people to control their and
others free speeches.
9. What did you find out from the video about the proceedings of finding solutions for free
expression arguments?
From the beginning, I want to mention that this video brought me new views on free speech. This
video, taught me that even free speech must have limits, because yelling:Fire! in a theatre just to
cause panic to all the people there, isnt a protected free speech and isnt a speech that people shall
hear. So, the solutions for free speech arguments are to find out what is the reason of that free
speech, what is the purpose of that free speech, what are the consequences of that free speech. We
can accept a persons opinion, but as long as it does not offend some other persons opinion. Its a
matter of democracy and also of justice. Because it is fair to say the truth, but it is not fair to
enforce people to believe things you think are true. So, the freedom of speech has all the rights to
be limited, for states prosperity and peoples peaceful coexistence.
