Drug abuse in Punjab
Punjab represents a sacred portion of our country. The rich history of this ancient land has given its people a sense of native pride. Punjab is a blessed region of India that once stood witness to countless victories and triumphs. Preserved by martyrs who gave their lives to sustain the people and culture, this land was once hallowed by saints. The state is a special place and is close to the heart of India. Once known for its life, unparalleled fertile land, joy, and vibrancy Punjab used to set the example. But The drug menace has intensified in Punjab over the last few years, and currently a large portion of the Punjabi youth are severely addicted to drugs.
Types of Drugs Being Abused in Punjab
Bhuki is similar to a type of wild grass that can be found throughout Punjab. It is possible to get a mild intoxicating effect from Bhuki, and it is considered a gateway drug because it encourages young people to begin experimenting. Heroin addiction is getting the most attention in the media. It is believed that this narcotic is flooding in from Afghanistan via Pakistan. Heroin is the drug that is causing most concern in the region. There authorities take a tough stance on borderline security, but despite this the drug continues to flood into the area. The profits to be made are high and corruption is believed to be rife. Most of the heroin going through Punjab ends up in the rest of the continent, but the fact there is such a high appetite for the drug locally means that smugglers have an easy market to exploit. Opium and morphine are other types of opiate that are commonly abused. Many brands of toothpaste in the region contain nicotine. There are reports of people consuming excessive amounts of toothpaste because it is a relatively cheap way to experience nicotine high.

Desperate Youth - Willing to do anything to get High:
Petrol - They dip a piece of cotton wool in petrol and keep it under their nose and inhale the air and they get high by doing that. Lizard - They kill and burn the lizard and eat it to get high. Boot Polish - They rub the boot polish onto the back of their neck and turn it towards the sun and they get high feeling by doing that. Petrol Pipes - They eat the dirt deposited on the leaking petrol pipe of vehicles and petrol pumps. Bhang in Cigarette - They rub the Bhang leaf in oily hands until it turns into a small ball of dirt and they put that small ball into the cigarette and smoke it. This gives them more thrill/high than normal cigarettes. Iodex - They use Iodex in place of Jam on a toast and with that taste they get high. Iodex is a pain relief balm. Correction Fluid - A simple stationary item which is used to correct writing or typing errors on papers. They cut open it and drink the whole fluid to get high.
There appears to be a number of reasons for why Punjab is currently in
the midst of a drug epidemic such as: Trans-border drug smuggling in punjab It is easy for young people to begin experimenting with substance abuse because of the ease by which they can get their hands on bhuki. This plant grows wild and it is difficult to prevent young people from using it.Some commentators in Punjab are blaming the green revolution which has led to a food surplus. This has meant that young people have been overindulged with nothing to do as there is not the same urgency to till the land.Heroin is easily available throughout the region and it is relatively cheap. There is growing affluence in this region and this may also be encouraging people to experiment with these substances. Some of those living in the region fear that it may be a form of narcoterrorism and those groups in bordering countries are deliberately trying to turn the youth of Punjab into addicts. The location of Punjab means that most of the heroin will pass through this area on its way to India. www.kushmanda.com

Effects of drug abuse :
Effect on parents, distress, pain Family and friends suffer because they have to watch their loved one self destruct. Effect on family (brothers, sisters, wives, husbands, children) Effect on work, productivity, punctuality, career Criminal problems, theft, police resources, smuggling, mafia, underworld, gangs Medical problems, addiction, death, overdose. Sharing hypodermic needles, used to inject some drugs, drametically increases the risk of contracting AIDS and some types of hepatitis. Society suffers : It means lost productivity as so many young people will not be fit for work. Health care costs of treating addiction are a tremendous drain on resources. Some parts of the region become unsafe because of the rising levels of crime due to heroin addiction. The greatest asset that any country has is its young people. The high numbers of young people in Punjab addicted to drugs is a national disgrace. The cost of policing the drug problem is a drain on resources. Solutions: The people of Punjab need to come forward to solve the grave problem of drug abuse by educating the youth about impact of drug abuse. They should change their habits, as steps to create awareness about drugs abuse impact needs to be strengthened. Though the Border Security Force (BSF) is doing their job, the Punjab Police too need to play its role effectively in arresting the trend. A rare participation is going on between India and Pakistan on the issue even as the latter is equally concerned about impact of drug trafficking in the region. We have signed an memorandum of understanding with the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) of Pakistan, which is also working hard on its part. We are regularly sharing informations with ANF," www.kushmanda.com
