Comparison of Data Transmission using C37.118

UDP and IEC 61850-90-5 Unicast and Multicast
Set-up at PG&E Proof of Concept (POC) Test facility:

Two PMUs measure the same voltage and current information

5PMU1 Transmits using C37.118 through a substation PDC to a

SuperPDC (SPDC)

5PMU6 Transmits using 61850-90-5 directly to the SuperPDC

Application Service Data Units One-to-one relationship between frame

and data units

Data unit is same as message size (301 bytes), One frame (<1524 bytes)
Not presented here: Set up to include multiple data units (ASDU) per frame
allowing repeated data to protect against loss of data

PMUs are streaming P Class data at 120 records (frames) per second

Interval of tests is 10 second (1200 records)

Test Results Simultaneous Measurements

Phase angle for phase A voltage for both the C37.118 and 61850-90-5 PMUs
The values track closely

Note that the C 37.118 PMU is filtered through the substation PDC, 61850-90-5
values come directly from PMU

Test Results Noise Impairment

Frames received and missing frames statistics.
5PMU6 only: P class ,configured for 120 fps - Expecting 1200 per 10s interval

Blue is number of frames received.

Red is the number of missing frames.

1.

First Impairment - 1 in seven frames dropped for ~ 2 minutes

2.

Second Impairment - 7 duplicated packets are inserted after every 14th packet, for ~ 2 min (the
duplicated packets are out of sequence)
