Melin Tregwynt first established in 1912 is still a working mill today employing 30 people and

still weaving in the traditional way. Over the last 5 years, despite the recession, sales and
production have more than doubled.
Today their unique range of blankets, throws and cushions can be found in hip hotels and
design led-stores, on film and TV advertisements. They have even made an appearance on
Dr. Who.
Alongside their own stock ranges the company specialise in customisation, short runs and
exclusive designs for hotels, designers and specifiers and have worked with companies as
diverse as John Lewis, Heals, Libertys, Muji, the BBC, SCP, Designers Guild, Margaret
Howell, Comme des Garcons & Mulberry who have all commissioned exclusive ranges.
Hotels supplied recently have included the Salthouse Harbour Hotel, the Arch Hotel,
Tresanton, The Grove Hotel, Cowley Manor and the Boundary. The company is currently
working on a refurbishment programme for Mercure and Jupiter Hotels.
In 2008 they successfully wove the largest recorded picnic blanket in the world. This 40 x 45
metre blanket was the star of the Waitrose summer advertising campaign. In 2009 the then
First Minister of Wales Rhodri Morgan said: Melin Tregwynts products have gained a
worldwide reputation for its stylish and eye-catching designs as modern as they come, but
linking strongly to the craft and cultural heritage of Wales.
2012 was the centenary of the companys founding by Henry Griffiths, the current owners
grandfather and Melin Tregwynt worked closely with Heals to develop a special range of
blankets/throws and other products to celebrate this occasion. They also held a number of
special events throughout the year and participated in a Wales based festival organised for
the Cultural Olympiad.
In early 2013 their blankets and throws were specified for the Celebrity Big Brother house on
Channel 5 and later in the year they worked on collaborative projects with Muji, the Tate
Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Autumn 2013 saw the launch of a range of bags
made in Melin Tregwynt upholstery fabrics by specialist UK bag makers Brady Bags.
New design developments for 2014 include a planned range of new fabrics using 100% pure
new wool sourced from British sheep and spun here in the UK. Other projects completed
include the restoration of the water wheel originally built in 1910 and this was given a Royal
seal of approval by HRH Prince Charles who visited the mill on Monday 30th June to meet
the staff and to attend the Making it in Wales event organised by Creative Skillset Cymru,
which we hosted.
