Present Sanitation Scenario in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is now in second position in sanitation
coverage in South Asia (after Sri Lanka) (according to Joint
Monitoring Program (JMP) of Unicef-WHO).
Unicef-WHO)
Nationally, 97% people now use latrines (JMP, UnicefWHO 2014)
WHO,
2014), compared to less than 60% in 2003.
2003
Among latrines, 57% have been classified as improved,
28% as shared and 12% as unimproved (JMP, UnicefWHO 2014)
WHO,
2014).
Open defecation has come down from 34% in 1990 to 3%
in 2012 (JMP, Unicef-WHO, 2014).

Piped-10%; Other Improved-75%; Unimproved-15%]

Water Supply and Sanitation in Hard to Reach

Areas and People Remain a Challenge
Areas having poor water supply and sanitation coverage due
to adverse hydro-geological conditions, having poor and
inadequate communication network, and areas suffering
from frequent natural calamities are referred to as hard to
reach (HtR) areas; and people who do not have any fixed
place for living (floating population) are called hard to
reach (HtR) people.
Hard to Reach (HtR) areas/people include:
Coastal Areas
Char Areas
Wetland Areas
Barind Areas
Hill Areas
Urban Slums
