What is Explanation Text

Is a text that contains the processes associated with natural phenomena, social,
science, culture and more. An Explanation text is usually derived from the
corresponding author of the question 'why' and 'how' of a phenomenon.

a. Generic Structure of Explanation

1) A general statement to position the reader (introductory paragraph)
2) A sequenced explanation of why or how something occurs
3) Closing or concluding statement/ paragraph (optional)
b. Language Features of Explanation
1) Focus on generic, non-human participants
2) The use of general and abstract nouns
3) The use of action verbs
4) The use of simple present tense
5) The use of passive voice
6) The use of conjunctions of time and cause
7) The use of noun phrases
8) The use of complex sentences
9) The use of technical language

Example of The Explanation Text

TSUNAMI
A tsunami is a very large sea wave that is generated by a disturbance along the
ocean floor. This disturbance can be an earthquake, a landslide, or a volcanic
eruption. A tsunami is undetectable far out in the ocean, but once it reaches shallow
water, this fast-traveling wave grows very large.
Tsunamis occur when a major fault under the ocean floor suddenly slips. The
displaced rock pushes water above it like a giant paddle, producing powerful water
waves at the ocean surface. The ocean waves spread out from the vicinity of the
earthquake source and move across the ocean until they reach the coastline, where
their height increases as they reach the continental shelf, the part of the Earths crust
that slopes, or rises, from the ocean floor up to the land.
Tsunamis wash ashore with often disastrous effects such as severe flooding,
loss of lives due to drowning, and damage to property.

HOW CHOCOLATE IS MADE ?
Have we wondered how we get chocolate from? Well this
time we will enter the amazing world of chocolate so we can
understand exactly we are eating.
Chocolate starts a tree called cacao tree. This tree grows in
equatorial regions, especially in place such as South America,
Africa, and Indonesia. The cacao tree produces a fruit about the

A
General
Stateme

size of a small pine apple. In side the fruits are the tree's seeds.
They are also known as coco beans.
Next, the beans are fermented for about a week, dried in the
sun. After that they are shipped to the chocolate maker. The
chocolate maker starts by roasting the beans to bring out the
flavour. Different beans from different places have different
qualities and flavour. So they are often shorted and blended to
produce a distinctive mix.
The next process is winnowing. The roasted beans are

Explanat
ion

winnowed to remove the meat nib of the cacao bean from its shell.
Then the nibs are blended. The blended nibs are ground to make it
a liquid. The liquid is called chocolate liquor. It tastes bitter.
All seeds contain some amount of fat and cacao beans are
not different. However, cacao beans are half fat, which is why the
ground nibs from liquid. It is pure bitter chocolate.

HOW VENUS ECLIPSE HAPPENS ?

On May 16, 2010, people in most regions in the
world have seen a very rare natural phenomenon. It
was Venus eclipse. It was very rare amazing natural

A
General

event. It was reported that the Venus eclipse will

seen again in the future in 2050. Do you know how
this rare Venus eclipse happens?
Well, actually Venus eclipse is like Sun eclipse.
Venus eclipses occurs when the position of the earth,
moon and Venus is parallel. Venus planet will slowly
disappear for a moment because it is covered the

Explanat
ion

surface of the Moon. Venus planet seems to move to

the back side of the Moon.
The moon and planets are sharing a similar
apparent path in the sky. That is why, it is not
unusual for the moon to appear to pass close to
Venus. In fact, the moon appears somewhere near it
about once a month. However, most people dont see
these events because they are visible in the evening
sky only half the time, and then only for a short
period after sunset. The apparent closeness varies
from month to month as well.

HOW DO SEASONS HAPPEN ?

Seasons

come

to

us

regularly.

We

have

probably noticed that it gets warmer in summer or

dry season while it get colder in the winter or wet

A
General

season. However do we know how these seasons

change?
Seasons happen and change every year. This
happens because the earth tilts back and forth as it
goes around the sun. During the summer, the earth
tilts toward the sun. It makes half of the earth hotter.
this condition is what we call summer. During the

Explanat
ion

other half of the year, the earth tilts away from the
sun. As a result, it makes that half of the earth cooler.
This cool condition is then what we call winter.
The different parts of the world have the same
season at different times. In the northern half of the
world

, winter

happens

during

the months

of

December, January and February. The regions are

such North America and Europe. In the other hand,
the southern half of the world have winter during the
months of June, July and August. The regions are like
South

America

and

Australia.

How

does

this

difference happen? The same season happens at

different times because the top and bottom halves of
the earth tilt away from the sun at different times.

MAKING PAPER FROM WOODCHIPS

Woodchipping is a process used to obtain pulp and paper
products from forest trees. The woodchipping process begins when
the trees are cut down in a selected area of the forest called a

A
General

coupe.
Next the tops and branches of the trees are cut out and then
the logs are taken to the mill. At the mill the bark of the logs is
removed and the logs are taken to a chipper which cuts them into
small pieces called woodchips. The woodchips are then screened to
remove dirt and other impurities. At this stage they are either

Explanat
ion

exported in this form or changed into pulp by chemicals and heat.

The pulp is then bleached and the water content is removed.
Finally the pulp is rolled out to make paper

PETROLEUM PRODUCT
Petroleum products, such as gasoline, kerosene, home heating
oil, residual fuel oil and lubricating oils, come from one source.
Crude oil is found below the earth surface, as well as under large
bodies of water, from a few hundred feet below the surface to as
deep as 25.000 feet into the earth interior. Crude oil is obtained by

A
General
Stateme

drilling a hole through the earth, but sometimes more dry holes are
drilled than those producing oil. Pressure at the source, or pumping,
forces the crude oil to the surface.
Crude oil wells flow at varying rates, from ten thousands of
barrels per hour. Petroleum products vary greatly in physical
appearance: thin, thick, transparent, or opaque. Their chemical
compositions are made up of only two elements: carbon and
hydrogen, which form compounds called hydrocarbons. Other

Explanat
ion

chemical elements found in the union with the hydrocarbons are few
and are classified as impurities. Trace elements are also found, but
these are of such minute quantities that they are disregarded.
The various petroleum products are refined from the crude oil
by heating and condensing the vapors of crude oil. These products
are called light oils such as gasoline, kerosene, and distillate oil.

Are you pro or con for facebook ?

Do you have facebook? this question can be easily heard from nowadays
teenagers toadults, especially for those who live in big cities.when mark zuckerberg
created facebook in 2004,he had no idea how big it would actually become, and how
big a debate the pros and cons of facebook would spark.it seems that everybody is
required to have a facebook account if they want to exist in a real life.is taht so?
In simple terms, facebook is a social networking website where each user
joins thecommunity and connects with their friends virtually.connected members can
shareinformation, pictures, videos and also use the facebook instant messenger
facility. amember creates a profile and uploads anything he/she wants, and all his
connected friendscan view this data at any time. s a consequence, people who like
facebook can spendhours on it browsing through other people's profiles.
To balance out the advantages, there are bound to be some cons of facebook
aswell.facebook userswill get bombarded with unwanted friend requests from
manyunknown people.your friends and family members will be able to snoop around
and knowwhat is happening in your life at all times. while facebook appears
entertaining andfun, there is a lot of danger in regards to personal data being
retrieved, compromised, andexploited. not mention that you will witness unnecessary
dramatization of unimportantoccurrences in yaor friends' lives.moreover, you will
waste many hours becouse facebook is addictive for most people.
However, you also canuse facebook for business purposes as many people like
to advertisetheir work on this medium in the hope thet a potential client or like to
advertise their work on this medium in the companies alsouse facebook as an

FOURTH MEETING
Example of The Discussion Text
The Advantages and the Disadvantages of Nuclear Energy
Issue
Nuclear energy is commonly offered as an alternative to overcome the crisis of
energy. The debate of whether the use of nuclear energy is an appropriate choice has
not come to an end. Some people agree with the utilization of it because of its benefits.
Some others, however, disagree because of its risks to the environment.
Argument pro
Those who agree with the operation of nuclear reactors usually argue
that nuclear energy is the only feasible choice to answer the ever-increasing energy
needs. In their opinion, the other sources of energy: oil, coal, andliquid natural gas are
not renewable and safe, while nuclear energy can be sustainable when produced in a
safe way.
Argument "contra"
However, people who disagree with the use of nuclear energy point out that
the waste of nuclear products can completely destroy the environment and human
lives. A meltdown in a reactor, for example, usually results in the contamination of the
surrounding soil and water. Take for example, the blow up of the nuclear reactor at the
Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station in Russia twenty years ago. The serious
contamination imperiled people and the environment severely.
Conclusion
It is obvious that nuclear energy should be avoided because it really endangers
the environment but what about a less polluted energy instead of nuclear energy? Is
there any alternative energy to overcome the crisis of energy?

Advantages and Disadvantages Bringing Handphone to School

Issue
There are a lot of discussion as to whether students can bring handphone in the
school or not. Is it important for students on bringing handphone to scholl? does not it
distrub them when study?
Argument pro
Some people claim that bringing handphone is important for students. It is one
of communication tools. They also argue that the students need handphone for making
communication such as when they have important information, they can give
the information to their parent directly. For example, If they leave their homework in
their home and their teacher do not believe their explanation, they can ask to their
parent parent to deliver it to their school or if they have additional class and they will
be late for go home, they can say to their parents by using it
Argument contra
However, there are also strong arguments against these points. There are many
disadvantages for students. Teachers think that bringing handphone is too disturb in
the learning process. Students will not pay attention to their teachers while they are
learning in the class. They will play handphone and they think that it is more
interesting than teachers explanation. For example, student that do not understand
about explanation from their teacher, they prefer to use their handphone because they
think it will lose their boring when they study.
Conclusion
I think, so many disadvantages if students bring handphone to scholl and
scholl should ban their student to bring handphone. It will disturb when they are
learning. However, teacher have to find effective way to explain material be more
interesting and there is no time for student to pay to their handphone.

FIVETH MEETING
Example of The Discussion Text
Pros and Cons on Anti Smoking Law no smoking
The pros and cons on anti smoking law or "smoking is forbidden" is still
being discussed in our country. The issue is not new. It is only a small part of the
anti-smoking wave which has been promoted for more than 50 years. Arguments for
anti-smoking are abundant. Some of them such as: smoking is a slow suicide and
makes other people passive smokers who has same impacts in term of health.
Furthermore smoking invites death and impotence, causing tuberculosis, lung
damage, stomach injury, liver and heart damage and cancer. In social interaction,
cigarettes make smoker smelly, weak, thin and poor. Moreover, cigarette smoke
contains around 4,000 chemicals causing air pollution.
However, smokers have a self-defense argument. They say that smoking
helps thinking, spurs creativity, calms the nerves, eliminates fatigue and grief, is
social, invites chumminess and healthy emotions.

ISSUE

CONTRASTING

SUPPORTING

Criticizing regulations, smokers argue that the anti-smoking law is unjust,

inhumane, violates privacy, restricts expression and is discriminatory. The antismoking regulation is siding with one and denying the other at the same time.
The two sides are equally strong. It is impossible to disregard either. Is
smoking or not smoking a matter of personal choice?

CONCLUSION

Television
Television becomes part of our life. Everyday we watch television. We
usually watch television after working, getting together with our family, even when

ISSUE

we are working. As the part of our life, television has bad and good effects. People
have different opinion about the negative and positive impacts of watching TV.
The bad effects most people say are TV makes us lack of movement. We stay
for a long time in our TV. It's not healthy life. They also say that TV influence our
daily life. Sometimes we don't realize that we become more consuming after

CONTRASTING

watching various ads. Some TV shows influence the way children act. The rudeness
and violence come to our house without permission through television.
But, the other people say that television has a good impact. We can get much
information from TV. When there is something happened in another city, we know

SUPPORTING

directly, fastly through the news on TV. TV also makes us relax. After working all
day, we come home and turn on TV to watch funny and comedy videos.
We can conclude that TV has a good and bad effects to our life. Our task is
how to choose the good things and try to take away the bad one.

CONCLUSION

SIXTH MEETING
Example of The Discussion Text
The Advantage and Disadvantage of the Internet
Issue
Computer, tablet, mobile phone, and other devices connected to Internet have
been the most outstanding innovation in the history of mankind. As with every single
innovation, internet has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Supporting Point
The target of internet has always been the communication. By the advent of
computer's Internet, our earth has reduced and has attained the form of a global
village. Now we can communicate in a fraction of second with a person who is sitting
in the other parts of the world. Today for better communication, we can avail the
facilities of e-mail; we can chat for hours with our loved ones. There are plenty
messenger services in offering. With help of such services, it has become very easy to
establish a kind of global friendship.
Contrasting Point
However, Internet also has disadvantageous sides. One of them is the wide
spread of unsuitable content for kids. It is a very serious issue and related to children's
healthy mental life. There are thousands of such inappropriate contents on the Internet
which can be easily found.
Conclusion or Recommendation
Though, internet can also create havoc, destruction and its misuse can be very
fatal, the advantages of it outweigh its disadvantages.

Cards Bring Advantages and Disadvantages

Issue
Gift cards become more popular during recent years. For example, in one
season of holiday, sales reach $19 billion in United Stated and seem to grow more in
the following season due to their convenience in the side of consumers and retailers.
Supporting Point
In retailers side, gift cards bring them some benefits. Selling gift card in
simply selling product. When the cards are sold, they will get benefit. Additionally,
gift card tends to be a matter of image and trend which means it is not strictly
influenced by the functionality. Since gift card is the trend, the sales will increase
significantly.

Contrasting Point
However, there is a potential disadvantage in the side of consumers. For
example, itune gift cards apply process in the way of completing the shopping. They
need do one step to another step in processing the shopping. Likely, most of the steps
apply time and date of validity or expiration. When certain step looses that validating
date, the gift cards may be in risk. The gift card can be rejected to redeem. Again, in
retailers side, producing card its self is costly. It means that there is additional cost
which retailers have to pay.
Conclusion or Recommendation
In whatever thing, we need to be wise. If we can use that gift card effectively,
the disadvantages can be reduced.

EIGHTH MEETING
Example of Review Text
HARRY POTTER : ORDER OF THE PHOENIX
Orientation
I absolutely love the Harry Potter series, and all of the books will always hold a
special place in my heart.
Evaluasi 1
I have to say that of all of the books, however, this was not my favorite.
Evaluasi 2
When the series began it was as much of a "feel good" experience as a huge mug of
hot cocoa. The stories were bright, fast-paced, intriguing, and ultimately satisfying.
Interpretation
Order of the Phoenix is a different kind of book. In some instances this works...you
feel a whole new level of intensity and excitement by the time you get to the end. I
was truly moved by the last page. Other times the book just has a slightly dreary,
depressing feel. The galloping pace of the other books has slowed to a trot here, and
parts of it do seem long, as if we're reading all about Harry "just hanging out" instead
of having his usual adventures. Reading in detail about Harry cleaning up an old
house, for example - housekeeping is still housekeeping, magical or no, and I'm not
very

interested

in

doing

it

or

reading

about

other

people

doing

it.

A few other changes in this book - the "real" world comes much more in to play rather
than the fantasy universe of the previous books, and Harry has apparently been taken
off his meds. I know that he had a lot to be grumpy in this book, especially with being
a teenager and all, but the sudden change in his character seemed too drastic. He goes
from being a warm-hearted, considerate person to someone who will bite his best
friend's heads off over nothing. It just seemed like it didn't fit with his character, like
he

turned

into

walking

clich

of

the

"angry

teen"

overnight.

Summary
The "real" story seemed to happen in the last 1/3 of the book, and this part I loved. I
actually liked the ending (and yes, I cried!) as sad as it was. It packed a punch and it
made me care about the story even more. Still a really good book, with some editing it
would have been great.

ZENNI OPTICAL : A SITE FOR EYEGLASSES

Introduction
Eyeglasses will become more and more important. It is not only because for
protecting our eyes from the hot light but also for holding the trend. There are a lot of
online sites which provides products of eyeglasses but Zenni Optical was on FOX
news! is just the perfect one.
Evaluation
If we visit the site, we will easily catch various information about eyeglasses.
The site is quite simple but very informative. It is real, easy and not complicated
design. With quick loading this site will bring us quickly in to what we want. There is
information about Variable Dimension Frames From Zenni. Titanium, aluminum and
rimless frame are available. The eyeglasses are designed for different users. Eyeglasses

Interpretation
Again, what makes it different is this site gives the Great Eyeglasses For Less
cost. The product can be sold in cheap price because it has cut the marketing link. It
straightly goes to the end user.

men who will met by Titania, Titania met a programmer named Rilley, in the "Fresh Market".
The first meeting of unintended continued to other meetings that make Titania felt something
in her heart. Not allegedly also turned Rilley is one of the list of the men who organized the
matchmaking. The stories of romance was continued after they realized about it. The
depiction of American men on Asian girl becomes the topic that I love from the whole story,
even though overall I liked this novel.
The nice delivery story that deliverd by the author, Aliazalea, will make the readers will not
be willing to blink their eyes when reading the novel "Blind Date". The attractive story
packaging that flows from the back yard increment to the flesh, not far from the previous
page.

The work of Andrea Hirata's novel with 534 pages thick book contains a very interesting
story. The story in the novel is a true story of the journey of a writer in pursuit of his dream to
the French State. This story was touted to be crowded very interesting film by renowned
director Riri Riza and Mira Lesmana. This novel is able to make the reader feel like drifting
and brought into the story in it.
The story begins in Laskar Pelangi from the life of a boy named Curly who start school with
had to wait ten children who want to attend school curls. Anxiously curls, Sahara, Trapani,
Leek, Syahdan, Mahar, Latitude, Borek, A kiong, Bu Mus, Pak Harfan, and their parents
waited to see if there is one more person who wants to go to school in SD Muhamaddiyah
when, not ten children then, they will not be able to attend school. Because, SD
Muhamaddiyah be finished. They waited so long finally a man fifteen years old witty and
somewhat developmentally disabled his ninth save Elementary School also Muhamaddiyah.
Curls and friends - his friends are very happy, they were finally able to go to school in SD
Muhamaddiyah to achieve dreams and goals - goals as a couple - exceptional in his Belitong.
The main character of the story he was named Curly A boy - a tough man, smart, brave, and
willing to learn to dream like accomplishment. Latitude character is A boy - a very intelligent
man, a genius, brave, but because that makes him keadaanlah Dropout. A figure is Mahar
boys - men who sing smart, intelligent, and love the things - things unseen (mystery), Bu Mus
is a woman who is very kind, thoughtful, and well-loved teacher students - students, and
many figures other.
Style of language used Andrea Hirata considered good style and very interesting, in it other
than the Indonesian language Bahasa Melayu also use that makes the reader look a little
confused and have to guess what the purpose of that language. However, in every sense of the
Malay language used there is always dikalimat bottom, so after reading the definition of the
language in which we can digest back Malay was a little less understandable.
The flow contained within the novel is groove mix, but more predominantly use Path
Forward. The author uses first person perspective, as an author of this story in the Main
Store. So the story is intriguing for the reader to want to quickly finish reading it. The novel
contains a lot of useful message for the readers. Andrea Hirata teaches us not to Desperate
advance, if it is to achieve the desired dream.

The interesting thing about this novel is that it can awaken us not to be easily discouraged if,
to achieve a dream. Teach us to be kind to your fellow and willing to help each other. In His
novel, Andrea Hirata clever tuck questions are constantly implied, from the beginning of the
story until the end of the story there is a sense of the Malay language and how to read it.
However, with all its beauty and kelebihannnya, this novel makes the reader gets a little
difficult because of the Malay language, the phrase and the sentence khiasan make this story
a little difficult. Even so, the story is still compelling and loaded with messages that can be
translated to contemplate and and more deeply.

Cars should be banned in the city. As we all know, cars create pollution, and
cause a lot of road deaths and other accidents.
Firstly, cars, as we all know, give contribution to the most of the pollution in
the world. Cars emit deadly gas that causes illness such as bronchritis, lung cancer,
and triggers off asthma. Some of these illnesses are so bad that people can die from
them.
Secondly, the city is very busy. Pedestrians wander everywhere and cars
commonly hit pedestrains in the city, which causes them to die. Cars today are our
roads biggest killers.
Thirdly, cars are very noisy. If you live in the city, you may find it hard to

ELEVEN MEETING
Example of The Exposition Text
I Why They Turn to the Sea
As the job opportunity is increasing limited on the land, more and more young
man are turning to the sea for a living. Some of them choose to work on a ship only
after they have failed to get a job. However, many young men actually would rather
work on the sea than on land. In my opinion, there are several reasons that account for
increasing interest in persuing maritime professions.
Firstly, our country is made up of many lands. We are surrounded by water. It
is not surprising that many people have growm to love the sea. In order to be able to
spend more time near the sea, they decide to work on it. Many of them spend their
whole lives on the water.
Secondly, the many school dropouts in the country as well as those young men
who have just finished their education in school are looking for jobs at the same time.
Competition for jobs is therefore great. Many fail to get work in offce or factories, so
these people turn to the sea as a last resort.
Thirdly, some young men face problem at home. They want to get as far away
from these problems as possible. The sea becomes a popular means of escape.
Finally, young people are naturally advantageous. They love to explore new
places. They enjoy the excitement that comes with this. By working on a ship, they
are able to travel far and wide. Besides, food and lodging on board the ship are free.
Thus , many young men are attracted to maritime profession.

TWELVE MEETING
Example of The Exposition Text
Corruption
Thesis
Do you know what the meaning of corruption is? What is the relation between money and
corruption? Well, corruption is common everywhere in the world, even in the United States.
Its just a matter of intensity. However, it is quite shocking when one reliable survey claims
Jakarta as the most corrupt place in Indonesia.
Argument 1
The survey has made me sad, actually, because I stay and earn a living here in the capital. As
most people know, Tanjung Priok port smuggling is not a new thing at all. Entrepreneurs who
want to minimize their tax payments tend to do such a thing more often. They even bribe the
officials.
Argument 2
Well, I think the measures taken so far to overcome the problem by punishing the corruptors
is still not far enough. We have to prevent the younger generations from getting a bad
mentality caused by corruption.
Recommendation
I believe we should start at the earliest stages in school and I think everyone should be
involved in the effort to eradicate corruption. We must not make any distinction.

COUNTRY CONCERN
Thesis
In all discussion over the removal of leaded vehicles from petrol (and atmosphere) there
doesnt seem to have been any mention of the difference between driving in the city and the
country.
Argument 1
While I realize my leaded petrol car is polluting the air wherever I drive, I feel that when you
travel through the country, where you only see another car every five to ten minutes, the
problem

is

not

as

severe

as

when

traffic

is

concentrated

on

city

roads.

Argument 2
Those who want to penalize older, leaded petrol vehicles and their owners dont seem to
appreciate that in the country there is no public transport to fall back upon and ones own
vehicle is the only way to get about.
Recommendation
I feel that country people, who often have to travel huge distances to the nearest town and
who already spend a great deal of money on petrol, should be treated differently to the people
who live in the city.
