1 SUMMARY

2 INTRODUCTION

An information system (IS) is a system composed of people and computers that processes or
interprets information. The term is also sometimes used in more restricted senses to refer to
only the software used to run a computerized database or to refer to only a computer system.
In today's high technology environment, organizations are becoming more and more
dependent on their information systems.
Information systems can be compared to the nervous system of a company. Its malfunction
may cause adverse effects in many different areas of the company. Information System
Security is understood as tool of the information confidentiality, availability and integrity
assurance. An effective information security system reduces the risk of crisis in the company.
It also allows to reduce the effects of the crisis occurring outside the company
Information system security is needed in order to protect our information against violation of
any kind that might endanger our systems.

2.1 Information Systems

Information systems are a part of any sort of organization. They are needed in any aspect of
modern buisness.information systems are focused upon processing information within
organizations, especially within business enterprises, and sharing the benefits with modern
society.
There are various types of information systems, for example: transaction processing systems,
decision support systems, knowledge management systems, learning management systems,
database management systems, and office information systems.

2.2 Components of information systems

Hardware: The term hardware refers to machinery. This category includes the computer
itself, which is often referred to as the central processing unit (CPU), and all of its support
equipments. Among the support equipments are input and output devices, storage devices and
communications devices.

Software: The term software refers to computer programs and the manuals (if any) that
support them. Computer programs are machine-readable instructions that direct the circuitry
within the hardware parts of the system to function in ways that produce useful information
from data. Programs are generally stored on some input / output medium, often a disk or tape.

Data: Data are facts that are used by programs to produce useful information. Like programs,
data are generally stored in machine-readable form on disk or tape until the computer needs
them.

Procedures: Procedures are the policies that govern the operation of a computer system.
"Procedures are to people what software is to hardware" is a common analogy that is used to
illustrate the role of procedures in a system.

People: Every system needs people if it is to be useful. Often the most over-looked element
of the system are the people, probably the component that most influence the success or
failure of information systems.1

2.3 MS-OFFICE
In 1990, a new concept was created by Microsoft Corporation to merge different software
applications into a suite package allowing users to navigate and share resources between
applications. Microsoft Office Suite 3.1 was introduced, tested and released for certain
government offices. In 1997, Microsoft produced its first official suite office application
package Microsoft Office Suite 97 for the public, which literally changed the way desktop
applications

were

used

in

abusiness

or

home

environment.

Today, MS-Office applications are used on more then one billion computers around the
world(according to the offical information provided by Microsoft).Which means that since the
intorduction in 1997 they have evolved and become the leading figure in office applications.

2.4 APPLICATIONS OF MS OFFICE

Microsoft's MS-Office has added more applications with various usages over the years,we are
going to mention and explain they usages.

2.4.1 MS Word
MS Word is a popular word-processing program used primarily for creating documents such
as letters, brochures, learning activities, tests, quizzes and students' homework assignments.
There are many simple but useful features available in Microsoft Word to make it easier for
study and work.

2.4.2 MS Excel
Microsoft Excel provides a grid interface to organize nearly any type of information. The
power of Excel lies in it's flexibility to define the layout and structure of the information you
want to manage. Basic tasks require no special training, and Excel allows you to work with
text, numbers, and date information in a relatively open and unstructured way. Nearly 30
years after it's initial introduction, Excel remains the worlds leading spreadsheet software

2.4.3 Microsoft PowerPoint

usually just called PowerPoint, is a commercial presentation program.generally uses a
graphical approach to presentations in the form of slide shows that accompany the oral
delivery of the topic. The main purpose of MS PowerPoint is to enable the user to create
dynamic, informational slides through the use of text, graphics, and animation. Slide
presentations created with the software are often displayed on projection screens for business,
training, or educational presentations, although they can be distributed as stand-alone files.

2.4.4 MS Access
Very simply, Microsoft Access is an information management tool that helps you store
information for reference, reporting, and analysis. Microsoft Access helps you analyze large
amounts of information, and manage related data more efficiently than Microsoft Excel or
other spreadsheet applications.

2.4.5 Microsoft SharePoint Workspace

Microsoft SharePoint Workspace allows you to access your SharePoint content whether or
not you are connected to the SharePoint server or working offline. When you are connected to
the SharePoint server, all content updates on the server and in the workspace are
automatically synchronized. When you are not connected, changes you make in the
workspace are cached locally. The next time you connect to the SharePoint server, all changes
are automatically synchronized.

Microsoft Outlook is an email program that can also be used as a personal information
management system.Outlook is primarily used to send, receive and store emails, but it can
also serve as a personal information management tool. Microsoft Outlook includes daily,
monthly and weekly calendars, address books for storing contacts, an area to keep typed
notes, task reminder features and a full journal. Business executives, students and
entrepreneurs can use Outlook to keep track of important dates and events and to keep in
contact with business associates, peers and family members.
