If not functional, abort departure & rectify defects ASAP.
On arrival before approaching, test rudder performance.
Bow thruster ready for operational use.
Request port authority focal point for towing & docking of vessel.
If loss of steerage occurs during docking operation. Seek immediate assistance
from port authority focal point.
Raise emergency alarm signal for emergency steering casualty checklist &
procedure.
If two main engines are running, try to steer by using engines different RPM and
to reverse one if necessary to alter heading.

Ensure that wheelhouse is properly manned, i.e.: Officer on duty & AB on
lookout
Once loss of steerage is observed or felt, immediately slow down RPM of
both main engines and engage to neutral.
If two main engines are running, try to steer by using engines different
RPM and to reverse one if necessary to alter course.
Use bow thruster to assist steering straight ahead & recover vessels
swerving momentum.
Inform Master & raise emergency alarm signal for emergency steering
casualty checklist & procedure.
Send a security broadcast to all vessels on VHF Channel 16. Seek
assistance if possible.
Call Company duty phone for advice & assistance.

fairway or channel.
Standby bow thruster prior entering fairway or channel.
Once loss of steerage is observed or felt, immediately stopped both main
engines, inform duty engineer.
If two main engines are running, try to steer by using engines different

Use bow thruster to assist steering straight ahead & recover vessels
swerving momentum.
Raise emergency alarm signal for emergency steering casualty checklist
& procedure.
Maintain vessel position at middle channel, to avoid grounding at shallow
banks.
Standby anchor for emergency use but be sure that the area is free from
