How it is differentiated from inner and outer boundary of the shaft?

Venkatachalapathy,
Per Y14.5-2009, there is no differentiation between virtual/resultant condition and inner/outer
boundary (which one corresponds with the inner or outer depends on whether we're talking about
an internal or external feature). Y14.5-1994 is a little different, though. In this, and earlier versions,
resultant condition is a variable boundary which is dependent on the produced size of the feature.
Or another way to say it, maybe.....2009 resultant condition can be described as the 1994
maximum resultant condition. Just as a note, there are a lot of folks who would like to see the
terms virtual and resultant conditions go away, opting instead for "inner boundary" and "outer
boundary".

VC and RC..
I think the purpose of these terms is to complicate the standard...inner/outer boundary are terms
that are more intuitively understood.
Besides, in this time period, "virtual condition" makes me think we're doing some kind of online
gaming.

If the standard only keeps inner and outter boundaries, a lot of people will still be easily confused
if they choose not to read through entire standard to have a complete understanding of design
needs. I still like the term of virtual condition in addtion to inner (for femal FOS) or outter (for male
FOS) boundaries, as it does not only tell you where the boundary is located, but also tells why
there is a needed definition of a boundary for assembly purpose (like 100% exchangeablility, etc).
As far as resultant boundary, although it is hard for many people to understand why it is a variable
boundary, but it is very usefull termology and a tool when a designer needs to know how actual

1 problem...no designer I've ever worked with has been able to adequately explain toe what RC
means....and few can explain to me what VC means. I think we teach them VC in a 2 day training
course...and in less than 2 weeks after the course they forget what it means.

About
The terminology is not that big a deal to me. I've liked the term "virtual" from the beginning,
because it's always told me how a feature of size can "virtually" act like (taking into account its
size and geometric tolerances) when designing for assembly. As for the term "resultant".....well, I
have less respect for that. With the added emphasis on "boundaries" that has come along with
the 2009 Y14.5, I can only see a benefit for the terminology to eventually evolve to "boundaries"

Also, Charlie, I must add that the association you make with "inner for female FOS" and "outer for
male FOS" is true for features given a geometric tolerance at MMC. For LMC situations, these
would be switched around. I know....we're all guilty of giving MMC/MMB most of the attention in
our GD&T minds :)

I think , virtual condition will be constant what ever actual size within tolerance. The change in Size
will be considered as bonus tolerance.
But resultant conditions is the worst case Boundary a part can have.

I thing that virtual conditions is most usefull to use when need to create a Gauge, and there are
several GD&T symbles related like perpendicular with MMC/LMC, diameter or pin with MMC/LMC.
and we need to calculate all our tolerances to make our best fit of the gauge or fixture.
Best regards.
