The new Options allow the Output Performance to stretch all the way to support 0.9 Leading
Power Factor loads, with no derating with respect to the rated UPS Output.
This means that the UPS will be capable of functioning at 100% of its rated output, thus
providing 100% of Active Power or kW in all conditions between 0.8 lagging and 0.9 leading.
A press release has been anticipated to the press through our Press Agency and its contacts
across Europe in occasion of the Italian Electrical Trade Show INTEL 05. English and Italian
text are attached with this memo.

1. Background
Traditional Switch Mode Power Supplies used in computers were designed in the past with a rather
low, and generally lagging active power factor. Common values of 0.7-0.8 were typical in data centers.
New power converters used in modern servers and other IT equipment, are now presenting a much
higher power factor, close to unity in many cases, and with a slightly capacitive or leading
characteristic.
Traditional transformer-based UPS technology now faces a new challenge to cope with these loads.
With the new Hipulse E, thanks to a clever combination of the output transformer and the capacitive
filtering technology, we are now able to fine tune the UPS output performance to support the new
application requirements.
1. Main Features
With your Hipulse E orders there are two new options:
Power Factor Tuning 1 or Unity
Power Factor Tuning 0.9 Leading
These options allow the UPS Output Inverter to operate without derating under the following
conditions:
Power Factor Tuning 1 or Unity = No derating of the Active Power (kW) of the Inverter with loads
up to 0.95 Leading. No variation of the other performance conditions of the UPS for Lagging loads.
This option is ideal for loads working typically between 0.8 lagging and unity a typical data center,
with a combination of new and old servers, and other non IT loads connected to the UPS, such as
motors, or Air Conditioning equipment.

Power Factor Tuning 0.9 Leading = No derating of the Active Power (kW) of the Inverter with
loads up to 0.9 Leading and 0.9 Lagging.
When using this option there is a small derating factor for loads between 0.8 and 0.9 lagging (up to 8%
derating at 0.8 lagging)
This option is ideal for loads working typically around unity or between unity and 0.9 leading power
factors. New data centers, with a predominance of new server and IT / Networking equipment and no
inductive circuits such as motors, transformers, etc.

NOTE:
When ordering Hipulse E units without the X-Treme Power Factor options it must be noted that a
derating factor must be applied when supplying power to leading loads. In this situation the unit will
supply approximately 76% of its rated output power (i.e. at 300kVA, rated output 240kW, with 0.9
leading PF = 183kW).

5. Documentation
Press releases in English and Italian for the new options are attached.
A PowerPoint presentation with graphs used also in this memo is also included with this memo (to
allow you to prepare custom material for your communications).
Our press agency Pragmatika will also have available a by-lined article on leading power factor loads
and new trends in Data Center loads for your press contacts. The article supplies some more
background information explaining the new trends and its meaning for UPS and Generators.
We are also planning a Webcast, which will be announced next week, to present these new
options and discuss its features and benefits.
