Then, why is it that some of our malls and shopping centres end
up aping the West?
India needs a market place, which is reminiscent of its location.
Where The site selected could be in any part of India. The site neednt
be an actual market place or demarcated for a proposed one. It
could even have a built mass, which you could choose to
replace with the market place because of its fitting context.
Who
The market place could cater to
the immediate neighbourhood
the people of the city
tourists from other parts of India
tourists from abroad.
When
You could choose the time of the day the market place would
be functional- whether it is a day market, a night market, or a
24x7 market, depending on the need of the target audience for
the market place.

Design ways to accommodate the hawkers
- You may choose to do case studies, first hand or otherwise, to
arrive at your design solution.
Restrictions
Heights, FAR and setbacks as per byelaws.
Maximum built up area - 30000 sqm (inclusive of
parking/circulation and everything). You could choose to work
on a street pattern shopping or a covered complex or even a
combination of both.
Eligibility
Maximum of two members in a team.
There are two categories for participation
a. Under-graduate Students where both members of the
team are undergraduate students. You could choose to
participate as a single-member-team as well. Students
could be from the disciplines of architecture, planning or
design
b. Professionals where one or both members of the team are
architects or design professionals. This category will include
post-graduate students as well. All participants in this
category should have graduated in or after the year 2007.
Submission Format and rules of the contest
A jury would judge all entries that are received in the first
stage and the shortlisted teams (around 8 in each
category) will be given an opportunity to work on their
schemes further and asked to present before an eminent
jury for a second round of evaluation. The second round of
evaluation will yield a shortlist of 4 teams that will present
their designs to a final jury.
This contest is open only to Indian residents.
All completed entries will need to be sent only as soft copies
to designmasterschallenge@gmail.com and should reach
us by midnight on 21st December 2014.
The entries could be pdfs or power point presentations in
version MS office 2007 or lower. Restrict your submission to a
maximum of 10 A3 sheets/slides. You are free to choose the
mode of presentation and could include sketches, plans,
sections, elevations, 3D views and walkthroughs whatever
explains your design best. If they are auto-run presentations,
the time limit is 8 minutes.
A participant could send in more than one entry.
Do not write your name on any of the slides but name the
file by your names/college name if you are participating in
the student category or are PG students and
names/organisations if you are participating in the
professionals category. For instance, if your names are a
and b and your college/organization names are c and
d then the name of your file will be ab cd. In case the
same team is sending multiple entries then the name would
