The Town of Strathmore called a special

council meeting for Dec. 23.
One of the matters brought forward was
the idea of a partnership between Golden
Hills School division (GHSD) and the town
when it comes to meeting some of the
recreation needs. The Division has been
granted, in principal, the approval to build
another school in Strathmore for Kindergarten to Grade 9.
Bevan Daverne, the superintendant of
schools for GHSD, has met with the town
several times in the past few weeks about
possibly having a joint facility where they
may possibly not have a gymnasium, and
possibly have a dome beside it at some location within town, said Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford.
They would be able to take the money
from the proposed gym and put that towards a dome, then the town could put in
money as well and then we could have a
facility that could be used by the community.
Councillor Pat Fule added that there
would still be the ability for a typical gym
facility for the school, but that would be on
one end of the dome and the rest would be
for soccer and lacrosse and other indoor
sports.
The dome could house a variety of things.
In some cases communities have added a
library, meeting rooms, a fitness facility and
an indoor running/walking track.
A dome would be 160 feet wide by 400
feet long, providing a large space to meet
recreational needs. It is also a cost effective
measure to take.
It costs about 30 per cent less to build a
dome than a regular building, and the energy cost is about 30 per cent less, so all of
a sudden I was very encouraged about a
dome, said Stanford.
He said they are at the point now of
needing some sort of motion so that GHSD
can begin pursuing different avenues, some
of which might not be available without the
partnership.
Despite the meetings and discussions,
Councillor Bob Sobol suggested it was still
in the early stages to get this accomplished,
but said it is clear that GHSD is looking for
commitment.

Trygve Many Guns and the UFA Bisons took on the German U17 Nationals in a pre-Macs Hockey Tournament exhibition game at the Strathmore Family Centre on Dec. 23. Unfortunately the
local team was defeated 6-4 by the Germans, but the big winner of the night was the Strathmore
Assembly of Youth (SAY) and their Disc Golf project. All proceeds from the game went to SAY for
the project and according to their Facebook Page, $3,146 was collected. For more coverage of
the UFA Bisons see Page 13.

Fur-ever reading

A new reading program at the Strathmore Municipal Library is for the dogs, literally. Fur-ever reading is a program
where kids can read to Akiko, a six-year-old pug-Pomeranian
mix who is Pet Access League Society (PALS) certified.
It is a reading program designed for ages five and up, said
Carmen Erison, assistant director of library services.
When you think about it, dogs are the least judgmental
animals out there and by giving children the opportunity to
read to dogs it helps boost their confidence and theres actually been studies proven on that.
Akiko has gone through training and testing to be assessed
for the correct health, obedience level, and temperament by
a certified dog trainer.
Kaylee Vanderveerbpresented the idea to the library.
My daughter always volunteers at the library and shes
very passionate about volunteering at the library, said Heather Vanderveer.
Shes also very passionate about wanting children to have
a love for dogs (and) educating them about dogs. She
wanted to bring the two together.
On Dec. 17 Hayley Taylor, 9, was reading Mrs. Jafee is Daffy
to Akiko.
Its fun, really fun because I never get to read with a
dog, said Taylor.

The Strathmore Pregnancy Care Centre (PCC) got a helping hand from
Grade 8 and 9 leadership students recently. Students from Trinity Christian
Academy put baby bottle piggy banks in
different classrooms to collect change,
among a few other small fundraisers
throughout the month of October.
Over $300 was raised and teacher Jay
Nelson then phoned PCC to find out
their specific needs. Jenn Page, coordinator of the Strathmore PCC, gave
Nelson a few idease, and he bought everything on the list including, diapers,
wipes, creams, powders, soothers, gift
bags and tissue paper.
When we walk through a pregnancy
with a client and once they deliver we
get a hold of them and we kind of put
together a gift bag of all new items,
some things for mom, some things for
baby, but theyre all brand new, said
Page. The gift bags are called layettes.
This is a great start and weve even
had other donations from other people
for our layettes which have been knitted blankets, brand new onesies, sleepers that sort of thing.
Well even take little gifts for mom
too, if anybody wants to donate that.
Town eyes new

recreation centre

I would be prepared to make a motion and the motion would be that
council approve in principal a joint partnership between Golden Hills School
Division and the Town of Strathmore for
a recreational facility that would include
an agreement for community use of the
facility with a maximum town contribution of $5 million, said Sobol.
The motion was carried. Additional
discussions will take place as a location
and other details are decided upon.
At the beginning of the meeting, Steve
Grajczyk was sworn in and is officially
the seventh member of council.
Thats kind of what I think is lacking

right now, said Drinda Hyde, also with
the PCC.
The students were invited on a tour
of PCC and their clothing room, and
had a chance to find out first hand how
the centre works, what they do and
how they help their clients.
We collected change and cause we
wanted to do different fundraisers for
our leadership class we decided to
fundraise for that, said Jessica Turner,
Grade 9.
It felt good to help, and it was cool
to see where the money was going.
Instead of sending it somewhere we
could see actually what it would go to.
Not everybody knows about it so
(we wanted to) help something thats
not as big as like the food bank, said
Danai Allan.
Trinity school is involved with We
Day and Free the Children; through
them schools are able to pick both a local and global charity to raise funds for.
The global charity is still to be officially
determined.

theft from the Crowfoot Liquor store located at
100 Ranch Market. An unknown male entered
to store on December 13th at around 3:15 p.m.
The male made his way to the back of the store
stealing a mickey of Spiced Vanilla Wisers by
hiding it in his jacket. The male continued to the
counter and purchased a 6- pack of beer and
left the store. If you have any information that

Speaking of resolutions, many people dont

bother making them at all. Those that do,
sometimes make too many. Not good. Pick one
or two areas of your life that youd like to change
and set some realistic goals for those changes.
Also, put a time limit on the goals, like 3 or 6
months. Shorter goals will enhance a feeling of
accomplishment when you reach them.
Weve mentioned in this column before that
writing down your goals is a positive way of
helping you achieve them. Just seeing your goal
on your bathroom mirror each day will help you
keep on track. Also, tell a few good friends and
relatives of your resolutions. They can be a great
help in keeping your motivation.
Some people are adversely affected by the
short winter days with decreased sunlight. Their
moods are affected causing irritability, fatigue,
lack of interest in activities and inability to
concentrate. Even sleeping and eating patterns
are affected. The condition is called Seasonal
Affective Disorder (SAD) and can be helped by
using light therapy.

Another year has passed and with the start of the new
year, its time to look back on whats happened and whats to
come with our beloved town.
From my perspective last year was a very exciting and a
very positive year in regards to this town moving forward
and accomplishing things. Weve had some businesses in
the area structure plans already starting to build, and theres
such a need for housing in this town that will carry on into
next year, said Mayor Michael Ell.
The support he has received from the citizens has been tremendous, and Ell states that its the people in the community
that are the ones that make it such a great place.
Ell predicts the town will continue to see the growth this
next year.
2015 may be a bit of a difficult year in the province and
Strathmore could be impacted. However, we have some exciting things happening and I will work through any difficulties. Council is continuing its work to have improvements to
our hospital, we are working to have new schools built and
we are committed to finding ways to fund recreation facilities. There will be infrastructure improvements undertaken
and completed next year, said Ell.
Strathmore is poised for growth. The town will have an
economic development strategy next year. The strategy will
assist in finding ways to improve opportunities for local established businesses, and attracting new businesses considering a move.
One of the exciting new projects coming is the medical/
residential building thats being put up next to the Hi-Ho
Gas station.
The building is beautiful looking and will actually enhance the downtown area, said Ell.
The town is still looking at making some improvements
to the downtown core, something he says is coming, but of
course cant happen overnight.
A few other things coming to the town: the museum committee will become a society in 2015; the Alberta 55 Plus
Summer Games are coming to the area; and the Canadian
Badlands will be hosting their AGM in Strathmore this spring.

Fun Runners giving back

The Strathmore Fun Runners donated $750 each
to the Youth Club and the Wheatland Food Bank.
The Fun Runners have been selling tickets since
July for their tool box raffle, and then the proceeds
were split and given to the two organizations.

A year with the RCMP

2014 was, overall, a good year for the Strathmore RCMP detachment, according to Staff Sgt.
Kevin Reilly. In general, things have seemed to
improve from a policing perspective year to year.
I would say in the course of the seven or eight
years I have been here Ive have definitely seen a
general decrease and downward turn in things,
said Reilly.
Strathmore doesnt have as much in the way of
serious and violent crime as there was when he
first arrived.
There are also programs put into place: bike
patrols, bar patrols, foot patrols in certain areas
of town, or targeted controls in certain areas.
The biggest thing I think that I have noticed
in the last year or two is the crime reduction unit
position that we have with Cst. Shannon White
in there. Thats a program where were monitoring and try and help rehabilitate those people
who meet a certain criteria, and they are the
more habitual, or more likely to reoffend type of
offenders, said Reilly.
An extra eye is kept on those habitual offenders, something they also notice, making them often less likely to commit a new crime.
Were also trying to offer them more help and
get them into programs and rehabilitate them by
trying to use the different agencies that we can
work with, whether its probation, whether its
McBride and getting them to go to the job centre
to see if they can get a job because of course
if theyre working theyre less likely to commit
crime, said Reilly.
(Or) whether its getting them into drug or
alcohol treatment programs so that they get off
the drugs and the alcohol which is what moti-
vates them to do their crime, and pay for their

habits.
Because of the crime reduction unit and the
work that White has put in, Reilly feels it has had
a significant impact on the community. There are
plans in place to involve more of the members,
creating an even better program.
Another successful initiative of 2014, and one
that returns on Jan. 1, 2015, is the enhanced
traffic enforcement program. This is where the
RCMP focused on target areas that are known
to have issues. One of the biggest areas of concern was the amount of traffice, including large
trucks, not adhering to the posted speed on Hwy
#1 within town limits.
We only targeted certain offenses, we didnt
worry about the guy with the burnout taillight,
or the guy whose license plate was obstructed,
we were looking at the major offenses that we
know statistically decrease accidents and injuries and death on the road, said Reilly.
Policing of the rodeo went smoothly, and there
was a reduction in the number of complaints
and incidences that normally occur.
Part of it is we know how to do the targeted
patrols during that rodeo, I have been here long
enough to know when we need and what we
need to do and where to cover and how to get
the members out there, and the members have
done that, said Reilly.
Looking ahead into 2015, he says they plan
to keep working on improving the crime reduction unit. He would also like to see more bike
patrols out when the weather is nice, something
he has always believed makes a huge impact.
Reilly would also like to see an RCMP regimental
ball come to Strathmore. It is something he has
been working on, but is not sure yet when it will
come to Strathmore.
Spreading Joy
Members of the Strathmore United Church celebrated the Christmas spirit by going around town
Christmas carolling to some of their neighbours on
Sunday, Dec. 21. Their first stop was at Sagewood
Seniors Community.

Wheatland County year in review

Wheatland County saw some productive steps
forward in 2014 and hope to continue them into
2015.
Reeve Glenn Koester could not have been any
happier with the tireless workers who worked the
extra-long winter days earlier this year to make the
county roads safer.
In my perspective, we had a pretty rough spring
for snow, and I know a lot of people thought we
had too much snow, said Koester. I really appreciated our crews putting in extra time and they
really worked hard to keep the roads open.
For the most part were blessed with some really good staff at the county.
Koester is optimistic, after a heavy snow removal
year in 2014, that 2015 will be somewhat easier on
the snow clearing staff.
Well I think we packed them harder this year,
(with) it being an unreal snow event year, so they
met the challenge and succeeded. Hopefully this
year (2015) is a lot easier on them and so far it has
been, said Koester.
He thought that council meetings in 2014 were
very productive and county plans that had been
passed are a step in the right direction in the future.
I thought we had a pretty productive coun-
cil year. We got our municipal development plan

passed, we had some turnover in staff in the planning departments (and) our land use bylaw had
fallen, said Koester.
I was hoping that would be getting close to being done, but I think they should be starting that
now. It seemed to be we got some good staff there,
hopefully they stay.
One of the major highlights was the Alberta
Government providing the county with a grant to
help with costs of the water project.
We got $9 million from the provincial government for our water project that were partnered
with Rockyford, Standard and Hussar. Its not
enough money to finish it, but its a start and they
seem committed to the project as money becomes
available, said Koester.
As a result of the grant, 2015 will be off to constructive start with the continuation of the water
project and the other developments of the Wheatland area.
(In) 2015, were looking to contract out some
roads for comparison purposes, (and) build them.
We have some reserves that weve been saving
some money for these projects for a while, said
Koester. Its going to look like were spending a
lot of extra money, but its money thats been put
aside for these projects. Its going to be a high expenditure year, but its going (towards) doing lots
of work we dont usually do.

To the Editor
What a stab in the back! If any of the deflecting
Wildrose MLAs had any honesty, they would have
stepped down from the Wildrose Party and ran as an
independent, then asked to join the PC. party. Would
they have taken any of them then? This way the PC
Party gets to kill the Wildrose Party with our elected
Wildrose MLAs blessing.
It is sad that these Wildrose MLAs could not see
that a great opposition is the key to a great democracy. But then they could not see the many still out
standing issues that need to be brought to the floor,

such as starting with the power to recall your way
ward MLAs.
Rats have more honesty than this group of people
that won our vote, then turn traitors to get to the government trough. If we wanted a PC we would have
voted for one in the next election, our choice not
yours! That is called democracy.

Charges laid in Siksika homicide

On Dec. 18 at approximately 7:30 p.m. Gleichen RCMP received a 911 call about a disturbance in progress at a house
on Siksika Nation.
When they attended they found an unconscious guy laying in front of the house outside on the ground and a bunch
of people milling around, said Gleichen Staff Sgt James
McLaren.
The members immediately called EMS to come and help
out with the injured fellow. They showed up and despite all
their efforts he was pronounced dead on the scene.
The teen, identified by family and friends as Chase Bigtobacco, 16, was attending a house party when the incident
occurred. Austin Bigtobacco, 19, of Siksika Nation, has been
charged with second-degree murder and has been remanded
in custody, and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 8.
In McLarens three years in Gleichen this is the fourth homicide for the detachment.
One of the recent ones was when Tak Tai Lawrence Leung
was killed while visiting his girlfriend in Gleichen on May 18,
2013. Two women have been charged with first-degree murder, and have recently entered guilty pleas for manslaughter.
Our violent crime stats are actually down within the detachment and on the nation, our serious crime assaults are
down by 50 per cent and our common assaults are down by
26-27 per cent, said McLaren.
We have been making efforts in the past two years and we
have been seeing on the domestic violence side of that, we
are seeing results.
As for the possible cause behind the decrease in the stats
I think community involvement is the big one, they know
when they call the police well take their complaints serious
and well go and investigate it, and well do everything we
can to bring the people to justice, said McLaren.

the ditch you can start your
car for 10 minutes every
hour or every two hours,
and you wont completely
freeze. Obviously another
good rule of thumb while
travelling during the winter
is to have blankets, warm
clothing, jackets, toques and
other items that can help
warm you up. Having a cell
phone charger is also ideal,
and letting people know
when youre leaving, the
route youre taking and your
expected arrival time can all
also save you if you get into
a situation.
Youve got to be prepared
for the worst, and youve got
to have heavy jackets, youve
got to have blankets and
enough for everybody, said
Reilly.
The other big thing is if
you are in that storm, contact us, let us know where
you are, whos all with you,
that youre all alright and
stay in the car. The problem with blizzards is some
people decide theyre going
to get out and walk to the
nearest something, and that
is the most dangerous thing
you can do.

Ah, Christmas season

ones, and for many a time to
spend travelling the sometimes-treacherous highways.
Each winter comes with
its own challenges, but there
are ways to stay safe while
travelling.
Take a look at weather
forecasts, sometimes its
better not to go, pick and
choose when youre going
to go shopping, or when
youre going to visit friends,
said Strathmore RCMP Staff
Sgt. Kevin Reilly.
Sometimes staying home
isnt an option, but there are
other options available, like
carpooling to hockey games
if thats why you need to
leave home.
If you do have to go out,
be prepared, make sure
your gas tank is full when
you leave town, make sure
you have some food so that
if you get stuck for a day
youre not going to be starving, said Reilly.
He suggests not travelling
with less than half a tank of
gas, stating that if its half, or
above half, you can run your
car for 24 hours and keep it
fairly comfortable.

Cindy Eisbrenners art is a bit of a family project. Her husband Martin is a photographer, and
she will often take his photos and transform them
into sketches, mainly using graphite and charcoal
as her medium.
Most of my stuff is black and white, because
I like black and white photos and just the depth
that you can get with charcoal, said Eisbrenner.
Theres a lot of nature, a lot of rodeo and theres
karate because my girls and I, and my son, we do
karate so that kind of works its way in.
Family comes first to Eisbrenner, so for a long
time her art was more for fun, and usually consisted of her doodling. In 2007 she took art classes
with her daughters and realized how much she
really likes to draw. Her art has developed from
there.
I think it was about two years ago, I wanted to
draw more but I needed something to make me
draw more so that I can develop skills. So I started
to blog and I said I would blog a picture every
week, said Eisbrenner.
It started off really well, but then as her skills
grew better her picture sizes grew bigger and it
became every two weeks she would blog a picture, then every month. She still blogs, showing
her viewers some of the latest pieces she has been
working on.
While there are other techniques that Eisbrenner
could learn, and may do one day, her focus remains on graphite pencil art.
Thats whats really interesting to me trying
to develop that realism, trying to see how real I
can make it look, sometimes better than a photograph, said Eisbrenner.
She has done some commission work which
she says has both been great and challenging, and
last year she began going to markets to showcase,
and sell, her work. Eisbrenner has also donated
different pieces to organizations to auction off in
fundraisers.
I enjoy that, I enjoy giving back especially if it
has to do with community because this is where
we live and the more were part of our community,
and the more we can put into it, the more were
going to get out of it, said Eisbrenner.
She is also considering offering art classes to
adults and children in the community.
I love learning, and I also love teaching so to
be able to teach other people drawing basics, because I think everybody can draw, they just need
to look at things right, said Eisbrenner.
She starts looking for shapes and how it is comparing to whats around it, in front of it, behind
it and then looking at the perspective which she
said is huge for getting things right.

New tender truck for Standard Fire Department

The Standard Fire Department has a new tender truck that
has been in the fire department bay since mid October.
The truck is to be used in the Village and in the surrounding rural areas as needed. The departments team consists
of 12 volunteer firemen and five Emergency First Response
Team (ERFT) members.
The Standard Volunteer Fire Association, which is separate
from the fire department, also serves the community and surrounding Wheatland County residents, is made up of some
of those residents and provides mutual aid to other fire departments within the county. The Association works in conjunction with the volunteer Association, Wheatland County,
and the Village of Standard to raise funds to purchase capital
equipment.
Scott Jensen, one of the captains said, We purchased the
truck Jan. 29 and received it mid-October. It is a tender truck

which holds 2,000 gallons of water, carries a portable drop
tank, 500 gal/min pump, 10 dump valve that allows us to
fill the drop tank with 2,000 gallons of water in just under a
minute and a half, and carries other various tools
Currently in operation they have two engines, one tender
(tanker), one bush buggy, one EFRT truck also called Rescue
2.
The old tender truck will be put up for bid to the public
and will be sold after Jan. 1, 2015.
On the evening of Dec. 16, the department along with Santa drove around town in the new tender, bush buggy, and
engine truck handing out candy canes and wishing everyone
a Merry Christmas. Leah Jensen, chief administrative officer
of the Village commented on the event: I have to say, it was
so special and they brought so much joy to the kids it absolutely warms my heart and makes me so proud of our fire
and EFRT members.

a mistake as the electrical payments were supposed to go to
the Water Treatment Plant. The school wanted the county to
reimburse them for the mistake.
Parkin said that the county has sent the school cheques to
compensate the mistake.
The county will pursue this issue further with Fortis Alberta to see what exactly happened with the billing information.

The Rosebud Centre of the Arts is seeking sponsorship
from the county to cover the 2015 theatre season.
The proposal came up because the Centre of the Arts felt
they were not receiving the proper amount of financial support from the county, who are supposedly putting more money into community arts programs in places such as Strathmore.
The Centre of the Arts has been considered to be a top
tourists attraction in the area for 31 years and running.
The Rosebud School of the Arts has 30 full-time students
in our post secondary program and another 45 students taking intensive and short term sessions, said Adam Furfaro, executive director for Rosebud School of the Arts. In 2015, we
will employ 23 full-time staff and over 125 part-time seasonal
and contract staff generating $2.9 million in earned revenue
and another $900,000 will come from contributed revenue,
private individuals and the Government of Alberta.
Wheatland Council did not pass the proposal, as more
thought has to go into how they want to get on board with
the funding.
I talked to Adam a couple of months ago and they were
looking for some funding and I said put together a proposal,
so he sent me the proposal. Its more just information at this
point in time, I think councils direction was to bring it back
to the committee as a whole, said Alan Parkin,Chief Administration Officer for Wheatland County. Itll be up to council
when theyre available. So well discuss this at the committee
as a whole (meeting) and how they want to tackle that one
and well go from there, which I think gives us a considerable
amount of time.

pretty quickly on Boxing Day as they set the tone
in their tournament

win over the Vancouver NE Chiefs.

the puck, we usually get some offensive passion for our
team, said head

coach Dan MacDonald. We moved the puck pretty good today
and when that happens, we score some goals
and thats the secret for us.
After taking a 4-2 lead into the third, the Bisons
were able to get that important insurance marker in the third from Gary Haden, who scored a
hat trick in the game, to keep the momentum in
their favour.
Its really important in midget hockey to get
those goals because the momentum can shift
real fast, said MacDonald. Its 4-2 and if they
get one, its 4-3, were on our heels but we put
them on their heels and thats what you have to
do to be successful.
The players responded well to a new opponent by playing a complete team effort.
We only have one strategy and thats three or
four things we concentrate on and if we do that,
we can usually be competitive no matter who we
play, said MacDonald.

Many Guns and Kyle Gordon.

The UFA Bisons continued right where they
left off in the first game with a convincing 7-2
win over the San Jose Junior Sharks on Dec. 27
at the Max Bell Arena.
Despite giving up the first goal, the Bisons
never lost a beat, as they played with poise and
energy the rest of the game.
Forward Gary Haden had followed up his
three-goal performance, with a pair in the second game against the Sharks and credits his line
mates for the production.
It was all of our line up, we move the puck
well and I just find the right areas and my line
mates find me. I just had the easy job of finishing
it off, said Haden. It was just good puck movement today, we drove the middle and it opened
another lane. We were hitting that lane all night.
Assistant coach Dave Attwood was enthused
with how the boys took charge.
We really did not know what to expect because
this San Jose team hadnt played a game yet. So
we knew we just had to come out to a good
start and play our game, said Attwood. I think
as the game

on,
you could see
we moved the
puck and play
with
speed
really well
once we felt
out San Jose,
we started doing our thing

Langdons recreation
has bright future

The Hamlet of Langdon got approval from Rocky

View County to go ahead with groundwork for a new
recreation facility for the area.
Rocky View County funded $200,000, while the
Rocky View School Division provided $300,000 for the
groundwork.
The site is going to be used for a high school as
well as a recreation facility. The grant doesnt go (just
to) Langdon, that grant is for development of that field,
which is in Langdon, said Rolly Ashdown, Rocky View
councilor.
Its a green field site, theres been nothing on it before, and so when you have that you have to do a lot
of engineering. If you have any wetlands on areas like
that, then you have wetland compensation that has to
be made and basically getting the site ready for something.
Ashdown accredits the countless hours put in by community organizations to get the project off the ground.
The Langdon Community Facility Group has been
working on it for quite sometime.
The next thing that is going now is Phase 1 of getting
the land, and Phase 2, which will be getting the land
ready for something and that something could become
the ball fields that everybodys talking about, said Ashdown. In order to get that built, obviously theyre going to have to go into fundraising mode and get more
dollars together to get there. Baseball is extremely popular, theres over 20 adult teams and 200 kid teams.
Langdon, being the third largest hamlet in Alberta,
has had a rapid growth in population, and to accommodate the community, the county felt the demand for
a facility needed to be met.
Its quite surprising that Langdon is growing so fast
from a few hundred people in the 90s to 5,000 people
now. When something grows that fast its pretty much
impossible to anticipate how many are there, said Ashdown.
The problem with that there is no real recreational
facilities there. So its a start of it needing hockey, baseball and soccer.
The groundwork feedback has been positive so far.
Every step is a good step, any closer you can get to
having recreation facilities completed in any way shape
or form is always good, said Ashdown.
One resident sees the value of the facility, but not the
fact that it is dedicated to just one sport.
I think that anything that gets the project moving is
great, but I believe there is a greater need for an indoor
hockey arena, also being a hockey parent Im obviously
biased, said Dmitri Voyevoda.
I do see a rec centre as more people are realizing
the value there.
The county also put forth $40,000 towards an $80,000
upgrade to the Indus Recreation Centre.

Jumphouse Gymnastics, owned by
Lori Knopf and Cassi Weiss, has been
a part of our community for seven
years. Jumphouse is located at 122 Canal Gardens (just off of the 817).
The business employs 11 people to
offer many gymnastics programs and
free play. Children from age two-anda-half to adults of all ages can take part
in gymnastics programs. Jumphouse
also offers cheerleading for ages five
to 18.
Gymnastics classes run in 12-week
sessions. Jumphouse is just wrapping
up their fall session and will be moving into the winter session on Jan. 5.
Gymnastics badge classes run for an
hour and a half, giving the children
time to use every apparatus in the gym
including the floor, bars, beam, trampolines, and the vault. Jumphouse is a
great way to learn basic skills, which
can help prepare you for a competitive
program.
The Matrix Cheerleading program,
which is also run out of Jumphouse,
has three teams; Senior Gold, Junior Black, and Youth Sparkle. These
three teams attend many competitions
throughout their season allowing them
to showcase their talent. There is also
a recreational cheerleading team for
those who are too young to compete
or want to get a feel for cheerleading
before trying out for the competitive
teams.
Jumphouse offers drop-in times to
allow people to try out gymnastics or
just have some free time in the gym.
Drop-ins run on Fridays from 2 p.m.
4 p.m. and 6 p.m.-8 p.m., plus they
have teen drop-in (13+) from 8 p.m.
10 p.m. They also have family drop-ins
Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m.
- 2 p.m. (these times can vary depending on holidays and private function
bookings, such as birthday parties).
Jumphouse is unique to our community in that there are no other places
to practice gymnastics or cheerleading
in Strathmore. Gymnastics has a way
of making children very outgoing and
helps them gain concentration and
channel their energy into something
physical, says co-owner Cassi Weiss.
Weiss said that gymnastics has helped
kids a lot with confidence.
Parents often tell her that gymnastics has helped their kids in and out
of the gym.
Jumphouse gives back to the community in a number of ways, including
allowing those who are a part of AIM
Strathmore to come in for free gym
time every second Friday.

and on a timely basis.
Prepares year end working papers in connection with the yearend audit. Liaises with external auditors and assists with audit requirements.
Makes application for various grants and reports on government grants to various agencies and
stake holders.
Prepares and assists in the preparation of periodic reports for the Director of Corporate Services,
Departmental Directors, Government Ministries and Others.
Qualifications Completion of 4th year standing in a recognized accounting program leading to a professional designation such as CGA, CMA. Completion of the accounting designation will be required.
A minimum of two years municipal accounting experience is necessary, and some supervisory experience would be helpful.
