Vol. XXII No. 53

The Holy Family, Our Model

B

eing taken care of by my own parents

is an aspect of my life that I have
never experienced. But, when I got
married, I promised myself to be a good,
loving and caring mother. My husband
was a driver and was just contented with
what he earned. Nevertheless, he was a
loving husband and father. Despite some
of his human failures and problems we
encountered, these had never destroyed the
foundation of our family. We experienced
so many obstacles in our married life, but
these were really striving efforts which
prodded us to go on smoothly. We had four
children, two girls and two boys. Rearing
children was very difficult. During that
time there were no disposable diapers yet,
so, I had to wash the white linens used by
the baby every day. Milk was expensive, I
had to breastfeed, and at night, I would be
wet because of the babys urine. Despite
the tiresome routine, I still felt happy with
and for my baby. I never forgot also my
duties and responsibilities to my husband
as a wife because, when I married him,
I married him for what he was, his total
person both the positive and negative
elements that were in him.
As time passed by our children grew
with us, too. We had to tighten our belts and
prepared ourselves for bigger expenses. An
opportunity came when I received a letter
from the Civil Service Office informing me
to report immediately to Branch III as court
interpreter. That was a sign of a greener
pasture. I was at that time registrar and
member of the faculty of St. Vincent Ferrer
Seminary and my children were yet at their
tender age, but I decided to remain at the
Seminary, afraid of leaving my family. The
seminary as my second home is near us
and I could go home any time in case there
was a need.
Rearing children was not an easy
task. I had to implement discipline and I
still believed in the saying spare the rod
and spoil the child. Maybe this belongs
to the old school. But I agree to this kind
of discipline, for even God disciplined His
people. Discipline them - your children with love. Let them feel you love them and
no measure of harm will happen to them,

to their spirit. They were formed according

to what they had observed in the whole
family. Sometimes they got bored because
whenever I brought them to my relatives,
they had to besa mano all the folks from
the eldest to the youngest. Especially my
uncle who was so kind and gentle, he used
to kiss them and whisper to them to be good,
respectful, honest and kind. He never called
us by name but always with Nene.
My husband and I never missed a
Sunday Mass with our children. That spirit
of religiosity was imbibed in them. All four of
them finished their studies, at their own will.
My eldest daughter Sharon was a scholar of
the Student Grant-in Aid of the University of
San Agustin and my second daughter Sheila
who had worked before as assistant to our
Librarian, Miss Consuelo Mojica at the SVFS,
later decided to accept the job as tutor and
aid to the nieces and nephew of Miss
Mila Palabrica, a Teresiana, at
Cagayan de Oro, where she was
enrolled by her employer at the
St. Xavier University to take up
Education. My two sons
entered the seminary. John
was recruited by Fr. Aris
Aban of Palawan.
He
finished his high school
in San Jose Seminary,
Puerto Princesa City,
Palawan, and then
proceeded to A.B.
Philosophy at the
Saint Vincent Ferrer
Seminary.
Maybe
it is Gods will that
he was not able
to proceed to the
priesthood, however,
he was able to finish
B.S. Psychology at
the University of San
Agustin, Iloilo City.
My youngest son,
Beboy entered the St.
Camillus
Seminary
at Marikina Heights,
Quezon City, but
stayed in formation
for only two years. He

graduated A.B. English at the West Visayas

State University in La Paz, Iloilo City.
We felt the atmosphere of love in the
family. Since they knew that I alone as their
mother could not send them to college at
the same time, they strove to look for some
means to continue their studies. Now, each
of them is successful in their own endeavor.
I am very thankful that all my prayers to
God were answered, that I was able to lead
them to the right path.
The Holy Family at the very beginning
has been our model. We have an icon of
which in our home. I taught them simple
prayers like Lord bless so and so, and
let them feel that God is present and is
listening. I know that it is in the family
where we begin our journey to holiness and
become fully mature Christians.
Sometimes I get so disappointed with
life because of our poverty, but when I
look at the Belen, I would say to my
self, Sobra pa sang akon subong
ginaagihan and ginagyan ni Birhen
Maria.
Ang iya

Disyembre 25 kag Enero 1, mga
inadlaw nga ginahatag sa aton
agud nga mapamalandungan naton sing
nagakaigo ang kaimportansya sini nga
panahon.

pangabuhi, kag karon makapanumdom
na kita sang espirituhanon nga kahulogan
sang Christmas. Himuslan ko man ini
nga kahigayonan agud ipaambit ang pila
ka mga panghunahona nahanungod sa
Paskwa sang Pagkatawo sang Ginuo.
Una sa tanan, ang pagkatawo ni
Jesus nagaagda sa tanan nga mga tawo
sa pagkambio sang ila tagipusuon paagi
sa Iya walay katapusan nga kaayo kag
kaluoy. Ang Anak sang Dios nagpakatawo
tungod kay luyag Niya nga ang mga
tawo magmangin pareho sa Dios. Ang
Simbahan nagaagda sa mga Kristiano
sa pagpamalandong sa Misteryo sang
Pagkatawo ni Jesus kag sa pagbaton sang

urs is not a perfect parish, not a

perfect community, not a perfect
family.
The work of evangelization is
very challenging and difficult. Many
of the problems - or properly said,
opportunities - in our community life is
rooted in the family. The realities of young
people indulging themselves in vices,
such as excessive smoking and drinking,
drug addiction and even gambling, the
proliferation of premarital pregnancy due
to premarital sex among the youth which
sometimes result to single parenthood
or break-up in relationship at an early
stage of marriage, the increasing number
of our brethren establishing family and
home without receiving the Sacrament
of Holy Matrimony, and many others,
reveal to us something very important,
necessary and urgent.
What else? As a youth minister
for many years now, I have observed
that many of our young people do not
know how to recite the basic prayers,
particularly the Apostles Creed and Act
of Contrition. Many of them do not know

Piesta sang Pagkatawo amo man ang
Domingo sang Sagrada Pamilya. Ang
aton Simbahan nagapahamtang sa
aton panulok sang panimalay ni Jesus,
Maria kag Jose. Maayo gid nga ang mga
amay sang panimalay magpamalandong
kag mag-ilog sang pagkamatutom kag
pagkamapainubuson ni San Jose nga
nagbantay sa mag-iloy nga Jesus kag
Maria kag nangin haligi sang Sagrada
Pamilya. Maayo man nga ang mga iloy
sang panimalay magtan-aw kay Maria
bilang hulowaran sang pagkaputli kag
pagkamatinumanon sa kabubut-on
sang Dios. Kag maayo gid nga ang mga
kabataan mangin pareho sa bata nga si
Jesus nga nagtubo kag nagdaku sa grasya
sang Dios tungod sang iya mapainubuson
nga pagpa-idalom sa tawohanon nga
pagbantay nanday Maria kag Jose.
Magpangamuyo kita nga ang tanan
nga mga panimalay magsunod sa
pagkahulowaran sang Sagrada Pamilya
sa Nazaret.

Revitalizing our
Parish Family Life Ministry
Fr. Nathaniel G. Gentizon

Here we realize that poor spiritual

life results to poor moral life. When we
become lax in prayer, we also become
lenient in our morality. Hence, the role
of the family, particularly of the parents,
in training the children in Catholic Faith
and teaching them the commandments
of God, is very indispensable. We can
gradually solve the problems in our
Church and society when we have a
strong Christian family life.
Our parish is challenged to revitalize
and strengthen our Family and Life
Ministry. We really need to organize,
form and mobilize family and life
ministers as part of our accountability
and commitment to the mission of
evangelization entrusted to us. As the
family is the basic unit, our Church and
the Fundamental Doctrines of our Faith. Perhaps, society will be healthy when our families
they were not taught in their own respective are as such.
Yes, our parish as a community and
homes because their parents may be inadequate
and incapable of teaching the faith for lack of family may not be perfect. However, its
knowledge. When in school, especially in public not yet too late. We can still do something
school, children are not interested to attend for our FAMILIES which we hope to be a
Catechism Class. Again, these realities reveal locus and agent of proclaiming the Word
something very important, necessary and urgent. of God for all peoples.

Fond Memories at Jaro Parochial House

I recall it was Msgr. Amadeo
Escaan who met us at the
convent. We were requesting
for a priest for a sick call to a
friend. While waiting in the
sala upstairs, I could feel the
peace within me triggered by
the homey and holy ambiance
of the convent. I felt at home in
this place. On another occasion,
I accompanied a visiting priest
from Tondo, Manila. He was
offered breakfast at the convent.
During this time, I was still
employed in the government
office.
I was spiritually
and physically filled at the
convent because of the caring
atmosphere. Now I am retired.
How I wish my experience will
be repeated in the new convent.
Let us all together help build our
Parochial House for the honor
and glory of God.

gindala nila ang bata sa Jerusalem
agud ihalad sa Ginoo. 23Amo ini ang
nasulat sa kasuguan sang Ginoo, Ang

sa Ginoo. 24Nagdulot man sila sing
halad suno sa nasiling sa kasugoan
sang Ginoo. Duha ka Tukmo, ukon
duha ka kuyabog nga pating.

Sa sadto nga tion may tawo
nga nagapuyo sa Jerusalemnga ang

matarong kag matinuohon sa Dios,
kag nagahulat sang pagluwas sa
Israel. Ang Espiritu Santo yara sa
iya, 26kag nagpasalig sa iya nga indi

ang ginsaad sang Ginoo nga Kristo.

Sa pagtuytoy sang Espiritu, si
Simeon nagkadto sa temple. Sang
gindala ang bata nga si Jesus sang
iya mga ginikanan sa pagtuman sang
ginasiling sang Kasugoan, 28ginkugos
ni Simeon ang bata kag nagpasalamat
sia sa Dios nga nagasiling:

Jaro Seminarians Family Day 2014

he Jaro Theology Seminarians

celebrated their family get-together
or Family Day with Archbishop Angel
Lagdameo last December 21, 2014 at
Pope John Paul II Hall at the Archbishops
Residence. Fifteen Theology seminarians
together with their respective families were
present in the said event. It is traditional for
the Jaro Theology Seminarians to celebrate
their annual Family Day. The purpose of
the said gathering is to better know and
strengthen the bonds of our families that
have already been established for the past
years and to nourish the seminarians
God-given vocation through their familys
life-giving and continuous support.
The events started with an Advent
Reflection, given by Very Rev. Fr. Midyphil
Billones, Rector of St. Joseph Regional
Seminary. Words of wisdom and insights
were given to us by Fr. Dodong.
After the talk, we had an audience and
exchange of greetings with Archbishop
Angel Lagdameo. One by one we introduced
our respective parents and family members
to Archbishop Lagdameo. Then, the
Theology Seminarians sang Christmas
carols to them. Archbishop Angel then
gave his message to all of us. After which,
we had our lunch prepared and brought by
everybody.
The family day extended towards
evening, and we had a meaningful
dinner at Smallville, bonding with our
beloved Archbishop. Msgr. Angels, future
sons in the Ministry shared one table
for a sumptuous dinner and delightful
sharing. The dinner ended with a desserttripping at Nothing But Desserts Pastry
Shop, mixing and sharing ice cream.
Indeed our Family Day 2014 was a joyful
and memorable one because of the presence
of everybody, especially our
beloved
Archbishop and our respective families
who shared and gave their continuous and
endless support for us. Jaro Seminarians

Villegas reminds faithful: God is not far beyond our reach

ANILA, Dec. 24, 2014 The

president of the Catholic Bishops
Conference of the Philippines
(CBCP) on the eve of Christmas reminded
the Filipino faithful of the closeness
of Christ to His people, noting that He
is always present to guide the faithful
regardless of the circumstances.
Christ is in all of us. (He) is in our
poverty, in our prosperity, in our hunger,
in our plenty. Christ is in our storms and
calamities. (He) is in our progress and
tranquility, in our dark nights, in our
sunny days. Christ is always with us, said
Lingayen Dagupan Archbishop Socrates
Villegas in his Christmas message to the
faithful.
Jesus close to us
Indeed that is the message of
Christmas. God is not far beyond our
reach. God has become small, small like

a baby, to make it easier for us to reach him; to

carry him; to hug him and caress him; to embrace
him and kiss him, he added.
Villegas noted that the forthcoming visit
of Pope Francis carries an added reason for
excitement, noting that the papal visit scheduled
early next year is an affirmation of the Lords love
for His people.
Although we believe in faith that God is
always with us, we also know in our hearts that
the coming of the Pope to the Philippines is a
renewed affirmation of the love of God for us,
the prelate said.
Moment of grace
When Pope Francis comes, he brings to us
Jesus Himself, the Word made flesh, Emmanuel,
God-with-us, he added.
He reminded the faithful that just like
Christmas, which celebrates the birth of Jesus
Christ, the focus of the papal visit must also be
the Son of God.

CANDLE LIGHT (Dec. 28, 2014 - Jan. 3, 2015)

[The Pope] comes to us to pay

homage to Christ who is already in our
country even before the start of the
papal visit. The papal visit is Jesus in
thePope visiting Jesus in the Filipino.
What a wonderful moment of grace!
Villegas said.
The CBCP president urged the
faithful to call on to the Lord so that He
may provide spiritual guidance to the
faithful in their everyday lives.
As we thank God who has chosen
to be so near, in fact to dwell right in
our hearts, let us also beg the Lord to
open our eyes and hearts that we may
always see the wonder of His tender
love everyday of the coming year in
everything that happens, in every
person we meet, in every moment of our
lives, Villegas said.

Catechists Christmas Gathering

he Jaro Parish Catechists had a

Christmas get-together with Msgr.
Higinio C. Velarde, Parish Priest
of The National Shrine of Our Lady of
Candles, last December 21 at 10 oclock
in the morning. The said event was
held at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Kinder
School, Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral
Compound. We were also joined by Rev.
Fr, Joenick S. Territorio, our Education
Director. We were all inspired by Msgr.
Velardes earnest message of gratitude

and appreciation to the mission of the

catechists. This recognition of the efforts
of the catechists was manifested in his
allotment of 10% of the collection during
Sunday Masses to the catechists fund.
He also appreciated the cooperation of
five public school administrators and
teachers, through which, we were able
to share the Catholic Faith to our school
children, resulting to the success of the
school catechesis.
Furthermore, he
stated that the services of the school

How do we Celebrate
Christmas as a Family?

ts Christmas time! What we commonly

see and read in the TV ads and newspaper
are: where can we buy cheap toys, for our
hijadas and hijados and gifts for the family
members? While we are planning on what
gifts to buy, we also worry of our budget
which deviates our attention from the most
important message: our encounter with the
Lord.
Experience has taught me that the less
I focus on these trimmings of celebrating
Christmas, the more I have peace in my
heart. So, we encourage our families to
refocus their preparation from trimmings
to the major point, why we are celebrating
Christmas - Jesus!
As we celebrate Christmas in
our homes, our family members are
encouraged to prepare their souls through
the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We attend
the Mass together and receive with great
joy Jesus in the form of the Holy Eucharist,
whispering a prayer: Come Lord Jesus, be
born in our hearts and in the midst of our
family.
The birthing of the Lord Jesus in
our hearts and in the families is truly
an experience of eu-charis or good gift.
Jesus is the eu-charis of God the Father to

Are You a Parent?

Lalaine D. Pasquin

all mankind. Thus we see to it that as a

family we go to church and attend the Mass
wherein we receive the Emmanuel in the
most intimate way that is Holy Communion.
After which we go home and continue the
Eucharistic celebration at our dining table.
In the Eucharist it is the gift of the
Lord that we share but at home, gathering
around the table, it is the gift of self that we
have come to share. Gathering around the
dining table for noche buena, one of the gifts
of person we share is the good stories about
life and relationship. Spending time with
one another and listening to each others
stories is enriching and very delightful not
only to the ears but more so to the hearts.
Another good gift of self we share is the
person himself or herself. Truly persons
are gifts and these persons are none other
than our family members. How good and
how pleasant it is, when brothers dwell
together as one. (Ps 133, 1)
Thus, as a family, Christmas season is
truly a celebration of the Lords good gift
and the gift of self of our family members.
A Blessed Christmas to every one!

and barangay volunteer catechists are of

great help in the evangelization program
of the parish. Msgr. Velarde suggested
that even though the parish already had
the Adult Formation, it is still better to
establish Adult Catechesis in the various
barangays. As for the updates of other
barangay representatives with regard to
their Catechesis it was mentioned that
parents are also supportive enough to
listen together with their children during
the childrens weekend catechesis. Mrs.
Elenita Java also took note of the snacks
of children attending weekend catechesis
that we had solicited from benefactors
and from the offering of monthly
Masses in five public schools in Jaro.
At the latter part of the meeting,
Mrs. Elenita Java, the Lay Education
Ministry Coordinator also expressed
his gratitude towards Msgr. Velardes
support and inspirational messages to
the catechists. She also looked forward
to having another meeting with the
parish priest.
A simple Christmas
party followed after the meeting.

Pureza D. Lacuesta

f you are a parent, you are handling

the most difficult job in this world. No
amount of money can ever suffice for
the labor you are undergoing whether
you are a father or a mother. Both body and
soul of the child entrusted to your care. You
cannot afford to fail. You have taken this job
voluntarily and you have to show that you
are capable of performing it.
Babyhood is a long and difficult process.
Sleepless nights and trying days are in store
for parents, even if they can afford to pay
helpers and take the baby to medical clinics
when their health fail. When they are ripe
for school, their educational needs have to
be supplied. It is during this time that the
character of the child must be developed
diligently. His mental, physical and spiritual
growth must be embedded in the home, in
school, and in the community. As the child
gains in years, God must be instilled in him.
His love and fear of the Lord must grow
stronger and more evident.
God doesnt want to lose His creatures.
He wants them to be with Him in His eternal
kingdom when they leave this world. Since
this is His desire, He sent His only Son, Jesus
to be our Savior.
Suggested Prayer for You and Your Family:

The first lesson we learn from the Holy

Family is humility. The Son of God was not
born in a palace. He was born in a stable
in a cave, with the manger as His bed. His
blanket and pillow were straw. Humility
was also depicted since His first visitors
were the shepherds who were watching
their flocks by night. A bright star in the
East, a comet, had proclaimed Jesus birth
and so they gathered whatever humble
gifts they could give. The next guests were
the three kings from the East: Gaspar,
Melchor, and Balthazar. Their gifts for Him
were gold, frankincense and myrrh. These
three were symbols of lifes phases: joystrials and compensations.
The Blessed Mother Mary and Joseph
were by the manger and they never left
Jesus side, attending to His needs. The
Holy family is an example of living through
poverty without complaint. St. Joseph
was a carpenter and Mother Mary was
a weaver. Although they were living in
poverty, they were never envious of their
rich neighbors. They never complained of
difficulty in making both ends met, or of
physical exhaustion.

A NEW YEARS EVE

AND DAY PRAYER
By Dan Wilt

Another year has turned its page, O Lord.

We feel promises about to be fulfilled,
hopes that may be realized,
And sorrows unknown
that may become ours to bear.
All of this, we carry into a New Year.
We declare at the doorway into this year,
that our trust is not
In any man or woman to fulfill us,
Nor is our trust in circumstance,
Or a belief that the days ahead will be easy.
We do not expect, in this New Year,
for our every prayer
To be answered in a way we would like.
You are in control,
and we release our lives to you.

We put our trust in this:

That You who have been with us
through this past year, Immanuel,
Will be with us in this New Year.
It is in You, Immanuel, we trust.
If you go ahead of us, we will go;
if you go behind us, we will go.
If you will lead us in a cloud by day,
and if you will
Light the night and its shadows with Your fire,
we will faithfully follow.
This is our prayer:
In all things that happen this year we ask
That we would be aware of
Your presence, O Lord.
In this walk that will always be
by faith and not by sight,
Let us percieve Your nearness.
We will stumble and fall,
and we will also succeed and triumph.
We will laugh, and we will also weep.
But in those moments in which
we cannot sense You near,
Let us see with the eyes of faith
the marks of Your presence all around us,
Beneath us,
carrying us boldly into Your future.
With You we walk,
with confidence and trust,
into this New Year.
In Your Name we pray, living Lord Jesus,
Amen.

CANDLE LIGHT (Dec. 28, 2014 - Jan. 3, 2015)

God gave the Holy Family to an example

of being contented in what we have and
what we are.
Today, we are living in a world suffused
by vices and crimes; these are the call of the
hour. Parents and elders no longer possess
absolute authority over their children.
Society is now saturated with things that
can destroy body and soul.
My dear parents, this is the time to give
more importance to prayers and spiritual
activities if we do not want lost in the circle
of Gods children. We can not live forever.
We cannot bring our riches and be buried
with them when we die. Let us gather
spiritual treasures and hand them down
to our children as their inheritance when
we die. Let us infect the people around us
with love for God and our name will not be
erased in the book of salvation.
Let us wish each other now a blessed
Christmas for 2015 and join our hands and
hearts this New Year as we look up to Jesus,
Mary and Joseph for graces, and to God the
Father, His forgiveness and love. Amen?
Amen!
