Importance of Naga Raja
According to Hindu mythology two of the most prominent deities, Lord
Vishnu and Lord Shiva, are closely associated with serpents. While Lord
Vishnu rests on the several hooded Snake Ananta as his bed, Lord Shiva
wears a snake around his neck as an ornament. Snakes have been
worshipped as gods from very ancient days, not just in India but across the
entire Planet.

Significance of Sarpa Pooja

Participating in the Naga Pratishta and performing the Pooja will help ward off any
Sarpa Dosham and give prosperity to one and all. The benefits of performing Naga
Pooja are many, including, women without children who worship Sarpa devata are
blessed with children, people who are not yet married are blessed with a happy
marriage, people with eye and ear problems are cured of their problems.
Worship of Naga Devatha can be made even by those who do not have Sarpa Dosha
for their general well being and prosperity.

Serpent Symbolism - The divine power, Kundalini, shines like a snake and coiled round
upon herself she holds her tail in her mouth and lies resting half asleep at the base of
the body.

Removal of Sarpa Dosha
Astrologically Sarpa dosha has acquired lot of significance as it is said to be caused due
to Sarpa sApa. Astrologically several interpretations are given for Sarpa Dosha.
Placement of Rahu in Lagna, 2nd, 5th, 7th, or 8th house, placement of malefic planets
(Rahu, Kethu, Mars, Saturn and Sun) in three Kendra Sthanas (1, 4, 7,and 10) said to
cause Sarpa dosha in general.

This Sarpa Dosha can be warded off by doing Naga Pratishta under the
Vriksha Raja (Ashwatha Tree) and further continuing to perform Mandala
Abhishekam (41 days) for both the Naga Devatha idol and the Ashwatha Tree.

Importance of Ashwatha Tree (Peepal Tree or Raavi Tree)

Moolatho brahma roopaya
madhyatho visnu roopine,
Agratha Shiva roopaya, vruksha
rajayathe Namah !

Salutations to the king of trees,

Whose roots is Lord Brahma,
Whose stem is Lord Vishnu,
And whose crown is Lord Shiva.

Adi Shankaracharya interprets this tree as representing the entire cosmos. 'Shwa' in
Sanskrit means tomorrow. 'a' indicates negation, and 'tha' means one that stands or
remains. He interprets Ashwatha to indicate "One which does not remain the same
tomorrow", or the universe itself. The eternal life of the Ashwatha Tree has inspired
many Indian philosophers and Hindu thought. It is not uncommon to run into
Ashwatha tree that is few hundreds or even a thousand years old!
