Introduction

For the coursework assigned, the FIK3042 students are to plan and carry out a
school-based project of English language activities. The project planned is to be carried
out in groups of five FIK3042 students. There are three components of this schoolbased project; the paperwork, the report of the project and the evidence. For the first
component which is the paperwork, our group has decided to organise an interclass oral
spelling competition for Level 2 pupils. The spelling competition entitled Spell-It-Right
will be carried out in respective students schools. The competition is set to be held at
respective school halls at 8.30 a.m. on the 8 th May 2012 (Tuesday). Thus, this
paperwork will be introducing the nature of the stated English project, the objectives of
the project and a timeline of the works that have to be completed. Next, this paperwork
will also state the technology learned to enhance the project. Lastly, a summary of the
impact of the project towards the school, the students communication skills will be
presented.

The Project
Spell-It-Right (hereinafter referred to as SIR) is inspired by the spelling
competition organized by one of the English language, tabloid-format newspaper in
Malaysia. SIR is a language competition which encourages pupils to develop their
vocabulary skills as it involves learning the correct spelling of words, their use in
sentences and in multiple contexts. The competition is conducted along with variants
that require the memorisation of a specific list of words. Though the rules and
regulations may vary according to the respective state or local area, the basis of the
competition is the same as pupils are pitted against one another with the aim of
becoming champion. As for us, we have formatted it similar to the spelling competition
held nationwide. Alongside with the planned format, we will be using the Longman
English Dictionary as the source of vocabulary used throughout the competition.

This project will involve us, the administrators, the members of the schools
English Panel and the whole school staff (for schools with fewer workforces).

The

Objectives
The prime objective of this project is to improve and advance pupils spelling and
literacy skills by encouraging them to explore the English language and expand their
vocabulary. The second objective is to develop pupils self-esteem, confidence and
interpersonal skills. Furthermore, it is hoped that once the second objective is achieved
pupils will be able to thrive under pressure. Concurrently, the third objective which is to
provide an environment that promotes pupils self-esteem, character development, and
sportsmanship comes in handy in helping to attain the two objectives mentioned above.
The fourth objective is to adhere to the schools need which is to select 3 participants as
the schools representatives at District Spelling Competition.
In coherent with the four objectives stated earlier, we believe that we will be able
to enhance our English proficiency skills especially our communication skills through
this project. This is because in order to prepare the pupils for the activity, we ourselves
have to search through the dictionary and sort out the most suitable words to be used
during the competition. To get the work done impeccably smooth, we have to cooperate
and communicate with other teachers in our schools especially the English Language
teachers as they are more experienced and are at the best position to guide us in
conducting this project. Through the bonding that is created with the English teachers,
we get to learn to pronounce the words phonemically correct. Indirectly, our
communication skills will be taken to a higher level because we can now utter the words
appropriately and confidently as we now understand the meanings of the words that we
are using. Nevertheless, it will be a plus point for the schools as the teachers involved
in this project will be able to deliver their subject content more meaningfully with less
pronunciation mistakes and greater two-way communication skills.

Technology Learned to Enhance the Project

Our group decided to incorporate some technologies in order to enhance the
quality of this project. The first media that we have decided to use is the Internet.
Towards the day of the competition, we will be showcasing some videos using the
YouTube; a video-sharing website on the overview of oral spelling competition held all
over the globe to the school staff and contestants involved. This is to make sure that
they will have a better grasp of how the competition will be. Hence, in order for us to
showcase them the videos, we have learned the ways to use the websites search
engine to locate videos which are in accordance with our project. We also learned how
to download the videos through the free download installer into our laptops and
notebooks so that we will be able to show the videos in case there is network failure
during the set date.
Next, we will also be using the LCD projector to showcase the videos during the
pre-competition days as well as the Microsoft Office Power Point presentation during
the day of the competition itself. During the day of the competition, we will put up the
correct spelling using the Microsoft Office Power Point presentation after each word
spelled by the contestants to the audience so that they will be able to write down the
words used on that day. In a way, this method will engage the audience throughout the
competition and indirectly, they are learning new words by themselves. As mentioned
above, we are also incorporating the Microsoft Office Power Point programme in this
project. We have agreed to sort the help from our schools ICT Teachers in order to
learn the tips and tricks of using the equipments as well as the programme. In this case,
we have learned to use the custom animation buttons to make the letters move to form
words.
Besides that, we are also using the digital video camera to take the snapshots of
the whole journey of this project for documentisation. We have learned to record, stop,
play the videos as well as capturing stiff motion of the characters intended during the

competition. Lastly, we will be using the CD Burner programme to transfer the videos
and pictures from the digital video camera into a re-writable CD.
Summary
In conclusion, the idea of organising the SIR Competition derives from the oral
spelling competition or more commonly known as the Spelling Bee Competition which
is universally held with the aim of improving pupils spelling skills. However, our group
has come to acknowledged that this oral spelling competition does not only revolve
around improving ones spelling skills but it is also done to enhance all four English
literacy skills which include listening, speaking, reading and writing. By giving us the
opportunity to carry out this English activity, the schools will gradually notice the
development of their pupils English proficiencies. This is because the roots of a
sentence are words. Thus, by having good grasp of the meaning of each word to be
used in a sentence, their school pupils will be able to construct meaningful and correctly
spelled sentences. Concurrently, it can be used as a tool for the schools to prepare their
Level 2 pupils for the upcoming public examination.
Aside from that, through this English activity, the pupils are at the better position
to be exposed to the rich English environment. This is because the pupils will strive their
way out to be the champion and to become one, they need to practise hard using the
four literacy skills. It is also hoped that reading will be one of their enjoyable likings after
the competition as they are now able to understand more English words than before.
It is also undeniably that the pupils especially for schools which are located in the rural
areas, the pupils will feel less intimidated while learning English subject. This is because
they have learned to overcome their fear of not understanding any English words and
they have also learned to build their inner confidence to speak up their mind.
As for us, through planning and organising this English activity, we have learned
to overcome our fear of communicating in English as we have reminded ourselves to
take this golden opportunity to interact with the English teachers and contestants in

English all the time. Nevertheless, as we have appointed ourselves to be the Master of
Ceremony, we have been practising hard to perfecting our pronunciation, word stress
and intonation in order to deliver well during the competition. We also learned to use
eye contact and appropriate body gestures while interacting with the audience. This is
to ensure that our messages will get through the audiences minds. In conclusion, the
SIR Competition is definitely one of the most fun and effective methods to nurture the
love towards English. It promotes more advantages than disadvantages to the intended
group. It is hoped that SIR Competition will stand out to be the yearly English activity to
be carried out in schools.
