Rabbis Message

Fulfill the Pledge

Stand Up and Be Counted. . . . On Yom Kippur Morning I spoke with you about the upcoming
elections of the World Zionist Organization that will determine the number of delegates that
will represent various segments of World Jewry at the World Zionist Congress next fall. And
in fact, I myself have now put my name in for nomination as one of the delegates from ARZA,
representing the Reform Movement of the United States. An interesting fact: the makeup of
the Congress will require that at least 1/3 of all delegates be women, and every 4th delegate, under age 30. Every single one of us has a chance to stand up and be counted.
Reform Jewish Values. . . . The purpose of the World Zionist Congress is to discuss the burning questions facing the Jewish world and to vote on how to deal with these issues. The math is simple. Electing a large ARZA/Reform Movement delegation to the next World Zionist Congress will strengthen Reform
Judaisms call for the values and ideals we cherish, equality, egalitarianism and peace most prominently
among them. It will grant the Reform movement greater influence in shaping what it means to be Jewish in the
Jewish State. Right now we are in a struggle for the soul of the Jewish State and whose values it will reflect.
This is the moment when we can work to create the kind of Israel that we can all be proud of and that mirrors
our values as Reform Jews.
Critical Issues for Jewish Life. . . . On the table right now in Israel are issues concerning freedom of religion,
gender equality, conversion, marriage and divorce, and empowerment of young adult leadership. Because of
our success in the elections (we are the largest representation) we have been able to pass resolutions supporting these issues and our positions. The World Zionist Congress, or the Parliament of the Jewish People,
remains the only forum in Jewish life comprised of delegates reflecting a broad spectrum of ideological and
political perspectives chosen in democratic elections throughout the world. As such, it does command the attention of Israels decision makers and serves as our mouthpiece in Israel.
Allocation of Funds. . . . Most critical of all, allocations the WZO makes to the several Jewish religious streams
are determined by the number of its delegates elected to the World Zionist Congress. Our representation at the last
Congress earned an annual allocation of $4 million for five years ($20 million). Thats not bad, but needs are expanding and our movement is growing, so this time, we need to do even better if we want to change Israeli society.
Pledge To Vote. . . . I was so gratified by your response on Yom Kippur, as so many of you filled out the
Pledge-To-Vote cards, which I sent to the ARZA office after the holiday. They will contact you soon regarding the voting procedures. Every Jew is eligible to vote -- the WZO belongs to ALL of us. For those of you
who did not have a chance to fill out a Pledge-To-Vote card, you may do so now online at:
www.reformjews4israel.org. If you have any questions, please be in touch. We want change? WE need to
make it happen! Please cast your vote and make your voice heard.

Union Temple Cares

As you all know, much of the work of the Temple is performed by volunteers, working through our various
committees. In addition to Brotherhood and Sisterhood, we have active participation in the Adult Education,
Beautification, Building, Communications, Fundraising, Investment, Membership, Preschool, Religious
School, Religious Practices, Social Action and Youth Group Committees, plus two Food Czars. Now, thanks
to the initiative of member Ellen Vanacore, we have a Caring Committee as well.
The Caring Committee reaches out to members who are ill, homebound or otherwise distressed, with a friendly
handwritten note or a call to check in. We cant be doctors or social workers, but we can let folks know that people
at Union Temple are thinking about them. Once weve hit a rhythm, we may consider more ambitious projects.
Last month, the Committee sent Hanukkah cards to all our members. Most of the time, however, the committee will respond to situations as they arise. Any member on the Mi Shebeirach list, or who has family on the
list, can expect a call unless they do not wish to be contacted. If you know a member who could use a
friendly call, send word to the Caring Committee through the Rabbi. Of course, confidentiality will always be
respected and private information is never shared.

Third Friday Shabbat!

January 16 beginning at 6:30 PM
Join Jesse and Mollie Miller for a night of some
folksy, country, bluesy, ballads and rockin'
songs. Some old favorites (depending on how
old you are), and some you've never heard. A
good time will be had by all.
The performance begins after the
Shabbat service.

Preschool

Leafing Fall Behind

Just before our

Thanksgiving weekend break we had a
school-wide fall festival in the ballroom on
the third floor. We
filled the ballroom
with leaves. Ira Levin,
our amazing and spirited music teacher
played his guitar and
sang lots of fall songs. As the children entered the ballroom and saw
all of the leaves covering the floor their looks of confusion immediately turned to unbridled joy. We had a truly memorable morning
dancing and singing and playing with the leaves.
We are still offering tours and accepting applications for the fall.
Please either call the preschool office at 718-623-1322 or email
us at susan@utpreschool.org or krista@utpreschool.org to schedule
a tour.

Sisterhood

Getting Ready for the

Bluest February

Its January, and we have a whole bright new year to look forward to. Sisterhood plans to fill 2015 with exciting programs that will inspire you, warm your heart, and widen your world. Well begin on Sunday, February
22, 2015 at 10:00 AM, with a Rosh Chodesh Seder to welcome Adar, the most joyous month in our calendar,
the month when we celebrate Esther and Purim. Well also be observing African-American History Month and
Womens History Month, which coincide with Adar this year. In tribute to both, well be discussing Toni Morrisons riveting and heart-wrenching novel, The Bluest Eye. Be sure to mark it on your calendar now because
you wont want to miss this morning of stimulating discussion with good friends and, of course, good food.
We have many exciting programs planned for 2015. Watch this space and your mail for more information about
them. We hope youll be sharing them all with us as a member. Its never too late, so if you havent yet joined or
renewed your membership, make it your first New Years resolution to mail a check for $40 to Sisterhood of Union Temple. What better way to start the new year than by sharing in our mission of Tikkun Olam?
Sisterhood wishes everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2015. May it be a year of joy and peace in our
hearts, our homes, and our world.

Education Corner

Its Mishpacha Time

Growing up in a large family we did not

have a lot of meals together. We all had
different schedules that had us all over the
place. Once a week we put everything we
had going on aside and had a meal together. This was every Friday night. We all
had to be home for Shabbat dinner. After
dinner we were free to go out and do what
we wanted, but we had to be home to say
the blessings over the candles, wine and
challah and enjoy a Shabbat meal together.
Here at Union Temple we have our First
Friday Family Shabbats. On the first Friday
of the month we gather together to welcome the Shabbat and spend some time
together. It is a great way to celebrate
Shabbat as a Union Temple family. We
have snacks at 6 PM, services from 6:30- 7:30 PM and then a delicious potluck dinner. Above is a picture from
the December First Family Shabbat celebration. I hope you will join us for the next one in January!

Wednesday Evenings at Union Temple: 7:30 - 9:30 PM

January 7: THE NORTH AMERICAN JEWISH TRIBES explores current trends within North American Jewry,
new modes of affiliation that are emerging beyond traditional denominational divisions, and the impact of
these changes on the relationship with Israel. [Dr. Hartman, and an interview with Rabbi Rick Jacobs]
January 14: UNITY AND DIVERSITY IN THE JEWISH TRADITION explores how Jewish sources have grappled
with the issue of balancing the competing values of unity and diversity and provides key insights that can
help shape the conceptual landscape of a Jewish democratic public sphere. [Dr. Hartman, and interviews
with Dr. Yehuda Kurtzer and Rabbi Sharon Brous]
January 21: THE POROUS "WALL OF SEPARATION" BETWEEN CHURCH AND STATE: LESSONS FROM THE US
AND CANADA examines the complex interaction between collective, tribal, and individual claims in American and Canadian jurisprudence through a study of American and Canadian legal traditions on questions of
State and religion. What emerges is a nuanced picture with important lessons for advancing a shared public
space in Israel consistent with its aspirations as a Jewish democracy. [Dr. Hartman]

Union Temple on the Move to Newport

You are cordially

invited to join us on
Saturday evening,
January 24,
5:00-7:00 PM,
for Havdalah, Wine
& Cheese, and
Schmooze with our
friends from
Shir Hama'alot.

On the weekend of December 6

and 7 members of Union Temple and the Garden City Jewish
Center travelled north to Newport, Rhode Island. The intrepid
group visited some of the great
historic buildings in Newport
including the Touro Synagogue
and museum (pictured below),
the oldest standing synagogue
in the
United
States. It
was a terrific
weekend
for all.

the principle of separation of church and state enshrined
in the US and NY State constitution.

Getting Priorities Straight

Every May the Reform Jewish Voice of New York State

holds an Advocacy Day in Albany. This year it is on
Monday May 4, 2015. RJV is the New York affiliate of
the Union for Reform Judaism Religious Action Center.
The Temple has been represented by Rabbi Goodman
and Sheila and Howard Katzman in the past. We want
to alert you to the three RJV priorities of last year that
still require legislative action. We will be discussing
these issues in the next few month's and urge you to inform yourselves and share your views with members of
the NY legislature and the Governor Cuomo. For more
information check the RJV NYS website to read about
their legislative priorities.

Third: RJV has supported a campaign finance reform bill

which has failed to pass the legislature. The legislature
has been especially notorious in fostering a culture of
secrecy and catering to wealthy private interests. Gov.
Cuomo needs to fulfill his pledge to support campaign
finance reform combined with stronger anti-bribery and
enforcement provisions.

We want to thank our Temple members, friends and

neighbors for contributing of food and money for the successful food drive for CHIPS held on the Sunday before
Thanksgiving. There was a clothing drive for the Help
Program and a prayer book collection. Thanks to Jane
