DuelMaster

Anumberofgamesweplayinmoderntimeswereinfluencedbygamesandeventsplayedin
ancienttimes.InthecaseoftheDuelMaster,wefindthesourceoftodayspopulartradingcard
game.DuelMastersarewizardlyfolkwhosemainsourceofpowercomesfromtheirmagical
energycards.Withthispower,theycangrantallsortsofbonusmagicaleffects,orcastspells
basedonthePokemontheyown.
WhenusingDuelmastersinanonPokemoncampaign,youwillneedanothermethodto
determinethespellsandabilitiestheycanusefortheirClassFeature.Forexample,theycould
learnbyreadingspellbooks,orbycollectingmagicalartifactsthattheymaydrawpowerfrom.

SimilartoTyped,someweaponsmayteachtheuseramovewhichtheycanonlyusewhiletheyareequippedwith
thatweapon.PerhapsyourarchersdragonslayingbowallowshimtousearangedinstanceofDragonClaw,or
anelectricallychargedmacethatcanswingoutThunderPunches.Aswithtypedweaponsabove,usetheseones
wisely.

ArmorKeywords
QuickReleaseStraps
Normally,takingoffonesarmortakesafullroundduringcombat,butwithalittlebitofengineering,youarenow
abletoremoveyourarmorinonlyaSwiftAction.
SaddleStraps
Usuallyusedbythosethatuseamountincombat,butarenotthemostproficientonamount.Thesestrapsattach
theusersarmortoaPokemonssaddle,makingitsothatitisnearlyimpossiblytoremovetheriderfromthe
saddle.Youalwayssucceedanycheckstostayinthesaddle,however,yourequireafullactiontodetachyourself
fromthesaddleanddismount.
SpikedArmor
Byattachingspikestoyourarmororshield,youmakeyourenemythinktwiceaboutattackingyououtright,butit
alsomakesitabitmoreawkwardtomovewiththegear.YougaintheIronBarbsability,buttakea2penaltyto

TheGuardian.MostTrainersarewillingtosacrificesomeoftheirwellbeingfortheirPokemon,

AGuardianriskshisorherlifeeverydayinabraveattempttoprotecttheirallies.Theseare

AfantasyworldisveryopentoGMinterpretationastohowthingswork.Belowareafew
suggestionsforthingsyouincludeinagoodFantasycampaign.
TomeMagicks(TMs)andHiddenMagicks(HMs)
Discsandsyringesdontexactlyhaveaplaceinamedievalsetting,soinstead,yourplayers
mayfindmysticaltomes.Thesearesheetsofpaperthathavebeeninscribedwithmagical
runesthatenableonetoteachamovetoaPokemon.Ifamoveexists,itispossiblethat
someonehasmadeaTMforit,thoughitisrecommendedthatyoudonotincludeLegendary
Pokemonssignaturemoves.
Inns
PokemonCenterslikelydonotexistinamedievalfantasyworld.Instead,thelocalinnwillbe
morethanwillingtoputupwiththeplayersforthenight.Innsareasafeplacetorecover,but
ratherthanhealingyourPokemoninstantly,yourecoveratdoublethenormalratewhenresting
atanInn.Ifplayersdontbelievethatitsthegoodfoodandcomfortableroomsthatarehealing
them,youcantellthemthatallinnsarebuiltonhealinghotspots.Innswillusuallychargetenants
forroomandboard,unlesstheplayerscompleteaquestforthem.
InnsoftenhaveaTavernorPubonthegroundfloor,andareaperfectplaceforplayerstomeet
otheradventurers,findadventurehooks,andgetintobarfightsgatherinformation.Whengiving
theplayersabartendertotalkto,rememberThe5RulesoftheRPGBartender:
1. TheBartenderisalwayscleaningamugwitharagwhenheisnotusinghishandsfor
otherpurposes.

CrystalHotSpot
Thereexistlocationsinthisworldwherecrystalssproutfromthegroundsurroundingapatchof
land.IfaPokemonstandsinthemiddleofthesecrystalsandanincantationisrecitedbyits
trainer,thePokemonmaybetypeshiftedtoanelementbasedonwhatcrystalssurroundthe
hotspot.YoumayrulethatonlyTypeAcesmayshiftPokemonhere,orthathotspotsallow
shiftingtoanytype,butthatisentirelyuptotheGM.

BuildingsandFortifications
Whendealingwithmedievalfantasy,itsimportanttoknowthebasicsofwhatyoursurroundings
willbelike.Herearesomehelpfultipsastowhatyourcitiesmaybe.
Castles
Usuallyownedbyroyaltyornobility,Castlesareoftenthecenterpieceofatown.Thisissothe
townspeoplemaybewatchedoverbytheirrulinglord.Moreoftenthannot,castlesaremade
fromstone,whichisafairlycommoncommoditythatiseasytosetupinanagewithout
concreteormassproducedsteel.Castlesareusuallyveryluxuriousinside,toshowoffthe
ownersimmensewealthandfortune.Thefloorsareusuallymadewithstone,amuchcleaner
material.
WallsandGates
Mosttownsandvillageswillhavewallssurroundingtheirtowntoprotectthemfrombandits,wild
Pokemon,andotherundesirables.Oftencraftedfromwoodandoccasionallystoneifthetownis
fortunateenoughtohaveaccesstogroundshapingPokemon.Gatesareusedtoenable
passageinandoutofthetown,andcomeinseveralvarieties.Thedrawbridgeisrather
common,ifthetownhasanaquaticmoatordeepchasmsurroundingit,andmorelavishgates
mayhavegiantwoodendoorsorevenironbarsthatareliftedbychainsorropesfromtheinside.
Houses
Peasantscanrarelyaffordmorethanwoodfortheirhouses,unlesstheyreparticularlyrich
merchants.Theroofsareoftenthatchedwithstraworthickgrass,makingfireparticularly
dangerousinthesummerheat.EnterTrogdor,stageright.Floorsareusuallydirt,andonly
extravaganthousesortownspeoplehavesecondstories.However,cellarsarefairlycommon
occurrences,aseventhepooresttownsfolkwillmanagetodigoutasmallstoragecellar.
Water
Somepeasantsactedasmillers,farminggrainsandstrawstouseontheirthatchroofed
cottages,aswellasforthepurposesofbakingbread.Todoso,theywouldsetupwatermills
nearsourcesofrunningwatertopropelthewheel,assuchmanyvillagesandtownsare
generallylocatednearriversandstreams.Inmoreluxurioustowns,somelordsorkingswould
setupaqueducts,aseriesofwaterpassages(usuallymadefromstone)totransportfresh
waterfromawatersource,suchasastreamorreservoir,aroundthecitytothetownspeople.

FireWall

Effect:Whentheplatesaretriggered,anyonecaughtstandingonatraptakesDamageBase4FireDamage.Do

CollapsingWallSpikes

Effect:Whenplatesaretriggeredthewallswillgrowspikesandslowlybeginmovinginwardpotentiallycrushing
thoseunfortunateenoughtogetstuckinthem.PlayersmayattempttoavoidthetrapbymakingaPerceptionor
Intuitionchecktonoticethepressureplate,afterthetraphasbeentriggeredRUN!Alternatively,theGMmaysetan
obstaclecoursetoreachtheoffswitch.
Pits
Trigger:PressurePlates.Willoftenbeominouslylargegapswithplatformsinbetween.
Effect:Thosewhofallintakefallingdamagebasedonthedepthofthepit.Pitswithspikesatthebottomincrease
basefallingdamageby1,andothernastysurprises,suchaswildPokemonorlava/boilingwatermaybebelow.
PoisonGas
Trigger:PressurePlates,Tripwires,ormanualswitches.
Effect:Whentriggeredapoisonousgasisreleasedintotheair,playersthatdonothaveproperprotectionfrom
airbornetoxinswillbecomeBadlyPoisoned.
FallingBoulders

Effect:Whentriggered,aboulderwilldropfromtheceiling.Theboulderwilltravelinastraightline,inflicting
DamageBase20toanythingitrunsover.Theboulderwillnotturnunlessthehallwayisdesignedwithcurvesinit,
soitissuggestedthatyoumakethehallwayjustlargeenoughforthebouldertofitintomakeitharderforthePCs
toescape.ThebouldermovesatOverland3eachround.
Golem/ElementalProtectors
Trigger:Aplayertriestoenteradoor,openachest,passacertainpoint
Effect:GolemorElementalProtectorsareoftenplacedindungeonstoprotecttreasurefromfallingintounworthy
hands.Golemsaretraditionallymadeofstoneormetal,andusemeleeweaponsandshields.Theymayknowthe
movegrantedbytheweaponedgeassociatedwiththeirmove,andhavestatsequaltoatraineroftheirlevel.
Elementalistsarecomposedofsomethingoftheirchosenelement,suchasWaterorFire,resultinginthem
havingthattype.andaretreatedasiftheyhavethesamestatsasatraineroftheirequivalentlevel.Elementalscan
useStruggleattacksoftheirelement,oratarangeof4dealingspecialdamage.TheymayalsoknowMovesof
thattype.Feelfreetobecreativewithyourgolemsandelementals.
BoiledOil
Trigger:Various
Effect:Whentriggeredboilingoilwillpouroutintothearea,thosecaughtintheoilwilltakeDamageBase5Fire

Effect:Thevictimiscaughtinapinkcloud.Theirgenderischanged,andtheirSpiritandBodyattributesare
swappedfortheduration.Thiseffectlastsfor24hours,oruntilanappropriatecureisfound.
Illusions

Effect:Whentriggeredmanythingscouldhappenbuthereareafewclassicexamples.Illusionsmaycoverthe

Trigger:ThereareSpiderPokemoninyourdungeon.
Effect:Thereisagiantspiderwebsuspendedinmidair.Thesewebsareusuallystrong,andverysticky.When
caughtinaspiderweb,theplayeristrapped,andcannotuseanylimbsthathavebeentrappedintheweb.Spider
Pokemon,suchasAriadosandJoltik,maytravelacrossthesewebswithnoproblem.Webscanbedestroyedwith
bladedweapons/attacksandFiretypemoves.
RevivedSkeletons
Trigger:Thevictimentersanareawhereanumberofotheradventurershavedied(ie.,apit)
Effect:Skeletonsreviveintheareaandareimmediatelyhostiletotheplayers.Theskeletonshavestatsequivalent
toaplayeroftheirlevel,andmayuseweaponsofanytype.Ifaskeletonfalls,theotherskeletonsmaypickupone
ofthefallensbones,enablingittousethemovesBoneClub,Bonemerang,andBoneRush.
WarpTiles
Trigger:Steppingonone.
Effect:Whentriggeredtheplayerorplayerswillbeteleportedtothelocationwherethewarptilehasbeenattuned
to,thismaybeanotherwarptilethatwillsendthembacktotheoriginaloritcouldbeintoaseparateroomallwith
noimmediatelyapparentexit,perhapsevennoexitatall.
Escherooms
Trigger:Enteringtheroom,hallway,building,etc.
Effect:Theseroomsarepartiallytrappedinaseparatedimensionalstateallowingfortheircompletedisregardfor
thelawsofphysics,gravity,andsanity.

ColiseumsandArenas

Acoliseumisanexcitingplacetobeinthemedievaltimes.Rulerswouldbuildtheseplacestopunishcriminals,
entertainthemasses,andhavesomethingtofeedallthosehungryLiepardtheykeeparound.Mostfightsinthe
coliseumarewithoutrules,andifthecrowddidntenjoyyourfightenough,theymayvotetoseeyouaxed!
Nexttobeingagreatplacetowatchorgetinvolvedinfighting,Coliseumswerealsoprimeplacestogather
information,thankstothelargenumberofpeoplegatheredtogether.Forthesakeofgainingmoney,manywould
placewagersonthecombatants,whichoftenhelpedtheeconomyoftherulinglord.
Dependingonhowyourcoliseumworks,participantsmaybestrippedoftheirweaponsandotheritemsupon
entering,meaningtheywouldhavenothingbutarenaprovidedweaponsandequipment,whichusuallymeantlittle
tonoarmor.Criminalswereoftenpittedagainstwildbeasts,andifacriminalsurvivedlongenoughinthe
coliseum,hewouldhavebeenfreed.Somewarriorschoosetostayatthecoliseumduetotheirinnatewilltofight,
orbecausethosewhoworkwillinglyatthecoliseumcanearnaheftypennyorawidelyacclaimedstatus.

Note:Forthoseofyoulookingforalittlemoregrimdarktotossintoyourworld,thecoliseumisawonderful
candidate.Oftentimes,theexistenceoftheseplacescoincidewithslavery,andacommonpracticewastoputthe
soldiersofanenemycountrytodeath,oftentimesbypittingthepoorsoulsagainstinsurmountableodds,suchas

TheBlackFog
AgroupofMediumshavebeenenactingsomeshadyactivityinthelocalcity.Whentheplayers
investigate,itturnsouttheyhavebeenworkingtosummonthierGod,agiant,soulsucking
HauntercalledTheBlackFog.Asuccessfulsummoningcouldspelldoomforthekingdom.
RunicInvestigators
Theplayersareaskedtoinvestigatesomenearbyruinsandbringbackinformationregardingthe
glyphsandrunesthatarelocatedthereitsfartooperiloustobringanormalresearcheralong.
