This document covers the information how to install virtual machine and describes
the settings required to configure the network between guest and host operating
system
Host Operating System: Windows 7
Guest Operating System: Linux Red Hat 5.4.8
This Guide is written assuming that you know how to install Linux and you want to
configure your Linux for Apps installation.
Installation of Linux is out of scope

1. Configure Microsoft Loop Back Adapter and give any IP e.g 192.168.1.8

2. Open the VM Ware Player

3. Click on Create New Virtual Machine

4. Select the radio button to install the operating system later

5. Select he guest operating system as Linux and select the version below. As I am going to install
Linux 5.4 update 8, so I have selected Red Hat Linux Version 5.
Alternatively if you select the first radio button in above screenshot and Linux CD is in the CD
ROM, System will automatically select the Linux Version.

6. Provide the location to install the OS and give the name and press NEXT

7. Privide the space required along with radio option selected to make VM in one single file

8. Click Finish

9. Click Edit Setting and make the RAM Size as per your system.
10. Make sure to select following settings for network adaptor

Click OK and install Linux.


Installation steps for Linux in out of scope of this doucument and will be covered in separate document.
Once installatoion of Linux is done on virtual machine. Configure a Fixed IP on Linux Machine by logging
in through root user and opening the network interface following the mentioned below menu
navigation

Following screen will open, Select

the ethernet

card and click edit

Configure the IP as given below. Make sure that you configure the IP in same scheme as you have used
while configuing the Microsoft Loop Back Adaptor.

Go to location /etc

Once you save it, this entry will be visible in HOSTS tab on network screen as follows.

Now search for the hosts file in host operating system. Navigation of this file is as follows

System32/Drivers/etc

And edit the hosts file in host operating system as follows. You need to add the entry of guest operating
system IP as follows

At this point of time, all configurations are done and both machines should ping each other.
