How to reconfigure / add printers

Starting from January 3rd 2012 you wont be able to print with your actual con<iguration:
in fact the IT services decided to replace the print server and some of the printers of the
faculty of informatics, resulting in the changes highlighted here:

You'll need to use your badge to print your documents.

You can replace the modi<ied values (print server and printer names) following the steps in
the next paragraph, or you can add new printers with the instructions in the last section.
* WARNING:
- Bachelor and master students will be able to print only on USI_LASER
- Academic staff will be able to print on any printer.

1.Modify printer se0ngs (MAC or Linux)

These are the steps you can follow to update your settings:
1) Access your local cups via browser on http://localhost:631
2) Click on the Printers tab
3) Choose the printer to modify (e.g. USI_MFP_BW)

4) Select Modify Printer

5) Select Windows printer

* MAC: Windows printer via spoolss (as in the picture)

* Linux: Windows printer via samba
6) Correct the old connection uri according to the printer details provided at the
beginning of this document:
E.g. old ->
new ->

smb://vmprn02.usilu.net/USI_MFP_BW
smb://printserver.usilu.net/USI_BW

* Beware that both the server and the printer name have changed!

7) Press Continue
8) Add Description and Location (not mandatory) as you prefer, and press Continue
9) Select the driver according to the printer model

e.g. Mac => Canon iR3235/iR3245

Linux => Canon iR3235/iR3245 PS

10)Click on Modify Printer to save the con<iguration.

2.Add a new printer (MAC or Linux)

These are the steps you can follow to add a new printer:
1) Access your local cups via browser on http://localhost:631
2) Click on the Administration tab
3) Select Add Printer

4) If asked, provide your laptop user and pwd, then click on Log in

5) Select Windows printer

* MAC: Windows printer via spoolss (as in the picture)

* Linux: Windows printer via samba
6) Insert the connection uri according to the printer details provided at the beginning of
this document:
E.g. smb://printserver.usilu.net/USI_BW

7) Press Continue
8) Add Description and Location (not mandatory) as you prefer, and press Continue
9) Select Canon as make / manufacturer of the printer
10) Select the driver according to the printer model
e.g. Mac => Canon iR3235/iR3245
Linux => Canon iR3235/iR3245 PS

11) Click on Add Printer to save the con<iguration.

12) Set the default paper format to A4 and click on Set Default Options

13) When printing your <irst document, youll have to provide your campus username and
password.
Only for Mac:
- print a document
- click on the icon having a printer with a warning signal recently appeared in your
application toolbar
- click on Resume

14) Insert username and password then click OK (optional: check Remember password
to avoid the prompt of your credentials for next use)

- Lion: username

- Snow Leopard, or Linux: campus\username
