The

film

is

potentially

more

powerful

medium

of

communication than any other that mankind has yet developed.

The motion picture from the broad educational point of view is
essentially a multiple method of communication. It is especially
effective as a technique for telling a story. It presents facts
realistically. It dramatizes human relations and events. It arouses
emotions. It transmits attitudes. It records and reproduces
phenomena for scientific study analysis. It depicts the imaginative.
And it can enable one to see the unseen. By means of the sound
motion picture, the whole gamut of human experience may be
communicated from teacher to learner wherever a learning
teaching situation exists.

LANGUAGE
THE ARCHIVES OF BABEL
32 min.

Pre watching
Do you know that
Today, English is one of the major languages in the world and it
requires an effort of the imagination to realize that this is a relatively
recent thing that in Shakespeares time, for example, only a few
million people spoke English, and the language was not thought to be
very important by the other nations of Europe, and was unknown to
the rest of the world. English has become a world language because
of its establishment as a mother tongue outside England, in all the
continents of the world.
This exporting of English began in the 17th century, with the first
settlements in North America. Above all, it was the great growth of
population in the United States, assisted by massive immigration in
the 19th and 20th centuries that has given the English language its
present standing in the world. Incredibly enough, 75 % of the worlds
mail and 60% of the worlds telephone calls are in English.
(extract from English as a world Language. Headway Upper-Int. by John & Liz Soars)

But what about other languages? Lets get back to the times of Babel
Tower. What was a protolanguage? What is the origin of all other
languages? What is a language in general?
LANGUAGE IS THE DRESS OF THOUGHT.
(Samuel Johnson, British lexicographer and literary critic)

Talking points:
1. A study of language can be problematic. Common thoughts are
expressed using the myriad of words the world over. But are the
words a real problem or is it the way they are put together?
2. What nationality do you prefer your teacher of English to be: a
native speaker or Russian? Who can explain grammar rules
better? What is more important: to have rich vocabulary or to know
grammar rules perfectly well? What are your strategies for learning
English?
3. Do you know that there are languages that dont differentiate
between Singular and Plural, dont have the concept of the Past
Tense? Does it mean that people speaking these languages dont
have a conceptual distinction between now and what happened in
the past, dont see the difference between one thing and many
things?
4. What is the reason for young people to have their own language
called slang?
5. In what way can the language divide people?
6. What does, in your opinion, a job of a linguist consist of?
Lets see how your answers correlate with the answers of wellknown linguists:

Watch the video episode and fill in the missing words and
expressions:
What Ive really learnt from looking at ____________ is just how many
different ways and how very different ways there are ___________
things, roughly the same __________, how it can be __________ in
such radically different ______, as you go from one language to
another. Also may be ________ here is the way in which __________
grammatical __________ have to be ____________ in a __________
language, but dont need to be expressed in some other language,
and what ___________ that has. So, in English, if I need to use
___________, I have to ___________: is it going to be __________
or plural? In a language like Chinese, which I _________ of that kind,
I could just say a tree. It could be any number. I find it interesting.
English is not just a language that gives me certain ____________,
but the language ____________ me in some ways. _____________
of English says: whenever you have a noun, you have
_____________ Singular and Plural, ____________ you have a verb,
you have to distinguish Past Tense and Present Tense, and, you cant
___________ and you cant have something, which is
______________, vague, across those.
Discussion:
Is ambiguity (lack of structure) advantage or disadvantage of a
language?
Jeff Connor Linton

1. What does Jeff Connor Linton say about ambiguity?

2. Why do Malagasy people tend not to use proper names?

Ex.2
Insert the words and expressions you hear in this part into the
blank spaces:
Through the use of words man created _______________ to
understand the world. Until something is ______________ using a

Donald Stilo

Ex.3
Re-order the words to make up what Donald Stilo says about a
relationship between language and culture.
1. Each which is that culture language through its this up in

2. It culture is drives that language.

Ex.4
Listen to this part of the segment and fill in the missing words

Ex.5
A laptop computer has made ___________ much more
_____________. It takes an incredible amount of _________, a keen
ear, and an __________ nature to do this work ___________. There
are the people who __________ that in order to learn a language they
have to buy ___________. If they know words they can
____________ and, of course, without the words and even with the
words its ________ to speak if you dont have a grammar. So, for me,
this is why the __________ aspects of language in general, are
_________ more interesting than __________ examples. Its
11

__________ more difficult to notice the grammatical differences that

least have __________ to shape a way of __________. The best
___________ that the young have is __________ to confuse the
eldest with words, the very ___________ of Babel. It is a partially
different _______ to show ____________ were together.

After - watching
Discussion:
Youve understood from the film that it is culture that drives the
language, and namely: culture forms peoples consciousness and a
unique picture of the world. It is an indisputable fact nowadays that
you will not learn a language properly if you dont know the culture of
the country the language of which you are learning. What is meant by
this?

Who said this?

Ex.6
You should match the statements with the speakers and
comment on them:
1. An important thing to remember is that development of the
language that started in the past hasnt stopped. How does it go
on? What influences the development of the language?
2. Once people understood language could organize them for hunting
they understood the language could organize them to dominate
over other groups. Which function of a language is meant by this?
What other functions do you know?
3. Regardless of whether I want to impart genuine information to you
or I want to deceive you, either way language has to use the same
devices. Do you know any methods not to be cheated?
4. Comparative method shows the way in which languages of one
language family can be derived from a single common ancestor.
What else can it show?
5. From a protolanguage you have a process of diversification and
convergence of variety of languages through our history. Language
develops to meet social needs. What do you think modern
tendencies of development are?
12

Ex.7
Do you agree with these statements? Why or why not? Give your
reasons:
Language is a tool to meet social needs.
Language is a reflection of culture and the universe around us.
The spoken word is a powerful tool that can divide people and unite.

The Bermuda Triangle received its most famous name the Devils
Triangle only in 1964, though the first record of it dates back to
Christopher Columbus whose compass went wrong while the ships
were sailing through the area, Columbus with his three ships got lost.
Besides the troubles with the compass, Columbus and his crew saw
weird lights in the sky which then crashed into the ocean. 450 years
later Jose Santos also noticed something weird in the sky and it cost
him life.

were, and they were _________. Then the _________ stopped and
they were never ________ from again.
Episode 3

Throughout time ships and airplanes of all sizes have suffered from
compass abnormalities, storms and 100-foot waves in this part of the
ocean. There are hundreds of disappearances every year that nobody
can explain. The US Government Agencies still dont recognize
officially the Bermuda Triangle phenomenon. The position of both the
US Coast Guard and the Navy Historical Centre is that the Bermuda
Triangle does not exist. They dont believe in supernatural
explanations of disasters at sea and blame most of the
disappearances on personal factor or nature.

At 4p.m Lt. Charles Taylor radioed that he lost the directions as

Why people nowadays spend so much time watching TV

There are various reasons why watching TV is so popular. The most
obvious reason why people watch TV is to entertain themselves.
There is no need to go to the theatre or cinema to enjoy the acting of
your favorite actors. It is very comfortable. Besides, you don't need to
pay money.
Another reason why people watch TV is to get information. TV can be
not only entertaining but also educational. With the help of TV you've
101

got the brilliant opportunity to travel all over the world, learn about
customs and traditions of other countries. It's very interesting.
For old people and people living alone, watching TV is just a way of
having a friend that stops them feeling lonely.
