First launched in 1997, Blue Sky Bulletin was the monthly newsletter for the United Nations mission in Mongolia.
The first issue of the Blue Sky Bulletin heralded the start of an expansive bilingual publishing, media and communications programme from 1997 to 1999 by UNDP Mongolia’s Communications Office. This included award-winning use of the Internet in a major crisis (un-mongolia.mn), the country’s first online magazine, Ger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ger_magazine), and the country’s first human development report (http://www.mn.undp.org/content/mongolia/en/home/library/National-Human-Development-Reports/Mongolia-Human-Development-Report-1997.html).
The UN’s headquarters in New York called the website developed by the Communications Office “A UN System site. A very nice, complete, professional site. Lots of information, easily accessible and well laid out. The information is comprehensive and up-to-date. This is a model of what a UNDP CO web site should be.”
From a design perspective, it is fascinating to see how the look of the Blue Sky Bulletin evolved as the country recovered from the economic crisis, and it benefited from the adoption of modern design and printing methods.
