Using Hydrajetting
Applications in Horizontal
Completions to Improve
Hydraulic Fracturing
Stimulations and Lower Cost
The most significant limitation with the HidraJet fracturing method
was a jetting tool life expectancy of only 150K to 300K of proppant.
Since 2008, new Jetting tools designs have increasing life to greater
than 1000000 of proppant have not caused tool failures.
Not only do hidrajetted perforations offer large, highly effective and nod
damaged perforations, but this method is often employed using very
closely clustered perforations at each frac location.
A nozzle of 0.25in must work with a rate of flow between 2.2 to 2.5
bbl/min. The internal diameter of tool was limited by the need for a
thick body for the tool to withstand the tremendous erosional effects of
pumping massive proppant quantities. When used in cased or liner
completions there would be external wear on the tool from backsplash
of the abrasive fluid, especially during the perforating stages prior to
pumping each fracturing treatment at a new location along the lateral.
HJAF (HidraJet assisted fracturing) used 0.3125in nozzle ID with
above 3 bbl/min per jet (typically 3 nozzles) in Bakken formation
horizontal.
If a well completion is large enough to use a 4.5 in OD BHA the
maximum rate could be en the range of 30+ bbl/min if an adequate
number of nozzles used, up to 14 15 nozzles (450 000lb) with this
style of jetting tool body. To use the 4.5in OD BHA would require at
least a 7in liner in the lateral, and no restrictions uphole smaller than
about 4.65in, or at least 6.5in open hole section.
